ALBERT PALEYVisiting Artist / Artist In-Residence, October 11 – 15, 2010

Art Department, University of Hawaii at Hilo

Residency and lecture made possible with support from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Hawaii Community Foundation Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund, The Art Department, Office of the Vice

Chancellor for Administrative Affairs and the Student Activities Council at the University of Hawaii at Hilo

Day One – Paley Residency 10/11/10

Albert Paley oversees the inking of cardboard stencils being utilized to establish shapes in a evolving group of monoprints that will be the focus of his print studio residency. On the wall are the first 2 in the series. A total of 48 prints would be pulled by Paley and his assistants during the 5 day period.

Problems adjusting ink viscosity

and getting a good overall print impression that

is able to create a mature range of values,

smoothness of color, and sharpness of line and shape -

limit progress and will not begin to be

resolved until the following day

Day Two – Paley Residency 10/12/10

The plexiglass monoprint plates are reduced two inches all around to 28 x 38 inches which improves the quality of the print impression. The addition of linseed oil improves the working viscosity of the ink, however, too much of the color is being absorbed by the cardboard stencils; the impressions still lack a certain richness…

…part of the early afternoon is spent shopping for alternative materials to use for the stencils; the selection includes a variety of decorative thin hard plastic sheets and “for sale” signs.

Late afternoon, Day Two the work really takes off…

Day Three – Paley Residency 10/13/10

Master printer Patrick Warren got rolling in the studio each day by 8:00am. Assistants Joel Viernes and Shannon Hickey and numerous student volunteers joined in to help and experience throughout the week.

Public presentations by Albert Paley are well attended and received
