What is a solution?

• When something dissolves into something else, the whole thing becomes a solution

• If you mix sugar into water, it dissolves. The sugar becomes invisible. It is now a solution.

• Seawater is a mixture of water and salt, it is already a solution you cannot see the salt.

What is a solution?

• Is water a solution?

• Is lemonade a solution?

• Is dishwashing water a solution?

• Is sand in water a solution?

What is a solution?

• Is water a solution? NO

• Is lemonade a solution? YES!

• Is dishwashing water a solution? YES!

• Is sand in water a solution? NO

Solutions contain 2 things

• Solute• It’s usually a solid• There’s less of this in the mixture• Once added, it becomes clear as it dissolves• SALT, SUGAR, ETC

• Solvent• It’s usually a liquid• There’s usually much more of this in the mixture• It dissolves the solute into itself and becomes clear• WATER, KEROSINE, MINERAL TURPINTINE (TURPS)

A few more fancy words to learn

• Concentration• The more solute (solid stuff) inside the solution, the higher the

concentration.

• Concentrated• If a solution is strong, we can call it concentrated, because it has

more particles in the solution.

• Dilute• If a solution is weak, we can call it dilute, because it has less

solute particles in the solution.

Last bunch of fancy words to learn

• Soluble• If something dissolves, it is soluble. It’s that simple!

• Insoluble• If something cannot be dissolved, it’s insoluble!

• Saturated• A solution is saturated if no more solute can be dissolved

• Suspension• The solid stuff that shows up in a liquid when it doesn’t dissolve

ExamplesIf I add sugar to water, it will D___________ .

If I keep adding more sugar, the solution will eventually become S___________ where no more sugar will dissolve

If I add sand to the water, it will just stay a solid and sink to the bottom, because sand is I___________ in water

ExamplesIf I add sugar to water, it will Dissolve .

If I keep adding more sugar, the solution will eventually become Saturated where no more sugar will dissolve

If I add sand to the water, it will just stay a solid and sink to the bottom, because sand is Insoluble in water

ExamplesA C__________ acid is more fun to play with than a D_________ acid because it’s stronger and the reactions happen faster!

My coke wasn’t sweet enough so I kept adding sugar (which is the S________ ) until it didn’t D________ any more. At that point, it’s called a S____________ S____________
