“We, as a 6th grade team, strive to
have all of our students by the end
of the year be able to develop life
skills such as the abilities to analyze,
critique, problem solve and be
inquirers, open minded and caring
individuals of society. “

“Through close readings of various
texts with multiple perspectives,
students will be able to have engaging
discussions, which will allow them to
express their claim in an informed
argumentative writing and respectful
members of society.”
Reminders: Come to school every day! 3 Tardies = Detention. Doors open at 7:30 for students and if
they enter after 7:45, they are tardy! Students are working very hard to earn rewards when the class
has 100% attendance! Summer school is mandatory for those students who have missed 9 or more
days of school!
Math: Students will learn about solving algebraic
expressions. It is imperative that your child
practices their multiplication tables at home daily.
Students will have math homework every night,
and as we continue to progress through the
curriculum, students will have more challenging
assignments that will take them a bit longer to
complete. Students are expected to finish all their
assignments on time. Homework directly
influences their grades and educational
development. Students will begin to use Compass
Learning, an online program that is directly
aligned with each student individual NWEA
goals. This will be used in addition to IXL every
week. It is essential for our students to complete
these tasks to meet their future Spring goal.

Reading: Currently, we are analyzing political
cartoons and advertisements through the lens of
rhetorical devices. We are having productive
discussions and writing around these pieces of text
and how it relates to our world today. In the next
few weeks, we will be moving into a poetry unit
where we will analyze with our rhetorical tools
various poetry and most of the literary devices
entailed with it. We have mastered quite a few
affixes; please quiz your child! As always, please
remind your child to read, study affixes and
vocabulary as well as to complete their weekly
Reading Plus!
Meet the teachers:
Reading: Ms. Ilic Writing: Mrs. Carrion Science: Ms. Rulkowski Math: Mr. Cruz
Science: This unit, we are learning about weather
patterns. Students are working to answer the
question, “Why do some rainstorms have more rain
than others?” As we start chapter 2, we will focus on if
temperature affects the amount of rain. I will be
staying late every Wednesday to help students. If your
student is struggling or missing work, I would love for
them to make plans to stay after school on
Wednesday to work with me.
Writing: Hello Parents! March is an exciting month
for our young poets and authors. We will take a field
trip to the American Writers Museum to explore the
world of American Literature. Upon returning from the
trip, we will conclude our poetry unit with a poetry
celebration. To honor and appreciate the creativity and
complexity of the genre, your poet will recite a
published poem. Presentations will be in front of their
peers and will be a project grade (30% of your child’s
3rd quarter grade). Ask your writer to practice reciting
the poem they have chosen in front of the mirror, out
loud in their room, and in front of you. The more
practice, the better prepared the student will be for their
presentation. After presentations, the students will dive
in to the literary works of Sandra Cisneros, Latinax
Chicago author. They will read her book House on
Mango Street with the following question in mind: How
does my community shape my identity? They will
answer the questions in an argumentative
essay. Continue to monitor your child’s grades on
Parent Portal. If you have any questions or concerns,
feel free to contact me via email
at ecarrion1@cps.edu.

Escritura:. Hola padres!
a usted.
a ecarrion1@cps.edu.
“Nosotros, como equipo de 6º grado,
nos esforzamos para que todos
nuestros estudiantes a fin de año
puedan desarrollar habilidades para la
vida, como las habilidades para
analizar, criticar, resolver problemas y
ser investigadores, personas de mente
abierta y humanitarias ”
Boletín de 6to
grado
Marzo 2019
"A través de lecturas detalladas de
varios textos con múltiples
perspectivas, los estudiantes podrán
tener discusiones atractivas, que les
permitirán expresar su reclamo en una
escritura argumentativa informada y
miembros respetuosos de la sociedad.”
Matemáticas: Los estudiantes comenzarán a resolver expresiones algebraicas.

Lectura: Ms. Ilic Escritura: Mrs. Carrion Ciencia: Ms. Rulkowski Matemáticas: Mr. Cruz
Lectura: Actualmente, estamos analizando dibujos animados
