CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD’S LOVE AND MERCY (AND DESCENDING IT, TOO!)

God often reveals himself on a mountain. It was on a mountain where he revealed himself and made his pact with Abraham. It was on a mountain where Moses was given the mission to bring his people out of slavery. It was on a mountain where Jesus Christ gave us the Beatitudes of the Kingdom. It was also on a mountain where the Transfiguration occurred. Jesus invited Peter, John, and James, weak and frail human beings, to climb the mountain and to his mission. The astonishment of the three men was so great that it seems they may not have understood the message and preferred to remain there enjoying the divine privilege of having Jesus just for

them. The heart is made sensitive to the word of God; and that is how they recognize that the love and presence of God is not a privilege for some, but for all humanity. We must always remain attentive to the voice of Jesus Christ who speaks to us from the gospels, through the outcast, those invisible to our society, and those who claim justice and solidarity. Through them, the Kingdom becomes present in our lives. In the same way, Jesus looks at us with the immensity of his mercy and invites us to go up the mountain and get to know the depth of God’s love, through an open and close experience with his Son. Are you willing to climb the mountain AND to come back down to face reality and live as true disciples of Jesus?

Fue en una m ontaña donde le dio a Moisés la misión de sacar a su pueblo de la esclavitud. Fue en una montaña en donde Jesucristo nos dio las bienaventuranzas del Reino. También fue en una montaña en donde aconteció la Transfiguración. Jesús invitó a Pedro, Juan y Santiago, seres humanos débiles y frágiles, a subir a la montaña y a su misión. El asombro de los tres hombres fue tan grande que pareciera que no entendieron el mensaje y prefirieran quedarse allí

disfrutando del privilegio divino de tener a Jesús solo para ellos. El corazón se hace sensible ante la palabra de Dios; y así es como reconocen que el amor y la presencia de Dios no es un privilegio para algunos, sino para toda la humanidad. Debemos estar atentos a la voz de Jesucristo que nos habla desde los evangelios, a través de los marginados, los invisibles en nuestra sociedad y quienes claman justicia y solidaridad. Por medio de ellos, el Reino se hace presente en nuestras vidas. De la misma manera, Jesús nos mira con la inmensidad de su misericoria y nos invita a subir la montaña para conocer la profundidad del amor de Dios, mediante una íntima experiencia con su Hijo. ¿Estás dispuesto a subir la montaña y también a bajarla para enfrentarse con la realidad y vivir como verdaderos discípulos de Jesús?

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CEMETERY WALK

On Sunday, September 22, 2019, we will be

having a public cemetery walk at the Immaculate

Conception Cemetery in Haverhill starting at 2:00

pm. The purpose is to explore the history of the cemetery and the

family histories of our ancestors buried there. We invite any family

member to give a short talk about their family buried in the

cemetery. We would also accept a written history if you cannot be

there in person. For more information and/or to volunteer to help

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD NEEDS YOU Children in grades Kindergarten—2nd grade have a chance to hear the Scripture at their level during Mass. HELP WANTED AT THE IOWA VETERAN’S HOME We are in need of Eucharistic Ministers to serve as substitutes when the regular ministers cannot be there. The usual time commitment is Wednesdays from 3:00 pm-4:30 pm. For some of the residents this might be the only opportunity they have to receive Our Lord in the Eucharist that week. You do not need to currently be a Eucharistic Minister. Please contact Deacon Tom Renze (752-2133) with questions or to volunteer.

MARRIAGE MENTORS NOW AVAILABLE This past spring, 13 couples were trained

to serve as Covenant of Love Marriage Mentors for eastern Iowa. This program helps married couples achieve relationship goals with effective support, information, and guidance. This process is effective for restoring and strengthening marriages in which both spouses are open to following God’s plan for marriage and putting into place the practical tools provided. Whether newlyweds or married for fifty years, and whether on the brink of divorce or just wanting to grow deeper in a relatively good marriage, this mentoring process can provide couples with guidance for strengthening and sustaining their marriage. es en español y en inglés.
