Through relationships and focused leadership, the Bradenton Area
EDC continues to deliver results for the community.
4 Reasons the Bradenton Area EDC Stays Ahead of the Curve
“By working with our partners
and developing new relationships,
we are on track to achieve our
strategic goals, while delivering
tangible results through business
relocation, expansion
and startups.”
Dr. Carol Probstfeld
2017 EDC Chair
President, State
College of Florida,
Manatee-Sarasota
We have developed a reputation for leading in a
collaborative manner that respects our partners and
demonstrates that we are open to learning from others.
We stay true to our core business, knowing where and when
to devote our limited resources to achieve meaningful results.
Businesses and our community partners rely on us to be
change agents working for the common good.
We remain focused on marketing the Bradenton Area as
the business destination for the South Tampa Bay region.

Global Business Development
Takes Off in 2017
A key role for the EDC is marketing Manatee County as
the business destination for the South Tampa Bay region.
In 2017, the
EDC’s global
business
development
program took
off with the
addition of a key staff position and new geo-targeting
social media and web strategies that drive business
relocation prospects to the EDC.
“The EDC’s new director of global business development
is opening up national and international
opportunities, with results that include
a market visit from a corporate prospect
related to sports performance.”
Kirk Boylston, 2018 EDC Chair-Elect
President, Lakewood Ranch

Sports Performance Sector
Marketing Gains Traction
In 2017, the EDC completed an in-depth analysis of Manatee County’s
sports performance sector, identifying more than 50 related businesses
located in the Bradenton Area and forecasting projected job growth of
14% through 2022. Hosting
a suite with Enterprise Florida
at the 2017 World Rowing
Championships in September, the EDC saw the nucleus of our sports
performance sector in action and nurtured relationships with existing and
potential new players in the industry.

In 2017, the EDC launched a series of industry roundtable discussions for
advanced manufacturing, sports performance, life sciences and information
technology. The discussions help the EDC and its partners understand the
needs of local businesses, while business owners and executives share
strategies on challenges ranging from workforce to foreign trade.
Industry Roundtable Discussions Pay Dividends for Existing Businesses
“Our Bradenton workforce grew by nearly 20
employees in 2017. For the most part, these are highly
skilled, technical positions in electrical engineering
and electronics. Finding employees with the right
skills continues to be a challenge. But with help from
CareerSource Suncoast and by engaging with Manatee
Technical College (MTC), we are making the right
connections to build our team. The EDC’s advanced
manufacturing roundtable was incredibly insightful
and helpful. Since that event, MTC’s
director has toured our plant to learn
more about our training needs. He
also told us about the pipeline of
talent development that the school
district is preparing from K-12
and beyond.”

EDC Cultivates Relationships across Manatee County to Foster Startups
Startup businesses can be terrific job generators, and they tend to stay
where they are launched. Assisting startups became part of the EDC’s set
of metrics for the first time in 2016.
In addition to providing concierge style assistance
with connections to resources and relationships,
the EDC is working with Connect Bradenton to
help promote a shared workplace environment in downtown Bradenton
tied to local college and university assets.
“Connect Bradenton
provides State College
of Florida with a unique
opportunity to create
a downtown presence.
We look forward to making new connections with
Bradenton’s downtown community and providing
on-demand, tailored programming where people
work, live and play.”
Dr. Carol Probstfeld, President
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota
“As a part of the University
of South Florida Sarasota-
Manatee’s continued
commitment to community
engagement through our
Business and Education
Connection Network, Connect Bradenton provides a
great location in the downtown business core of the
city of Bradenton. This is an excellent opportunity for
our institution to expand our outreach efforts.”
Dr. Terry Osborn, Interim Regional Chancellor
University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee
“We began developing our
brews in earnest in 2013 and
opened our doors in Lakewood
Ranch in the fall of 2016.
Finding a location, working
with the county on permitting,
dealing with the federal
government on licensing,
securing financing –
everything was a challenge.
Through it
all, the EDC team was there to offer connections and
resources. Each relationship added to the next one.
We couldn’t have gotten as far as we did without
the relationships.”
Diana Eibler, CEO
Naughty Monk Brewery and Taproom
Talent Development
Strategies Help Address
Workforce Demands
The EDC’s assistance to existing businesses
is wide-ranging, with workforce strategies
a major focus. For example, we continue to
work closely with advanced manufacturers
to address
their need for
skilled workers.
Rather than just
recruiting from
outside the area,
businesses are
turning to talent
development
strategies
fostered by
the EDC with our workforce and education
partners. Companies are learning that
internships and on the job training (OJT)
programs in concert with colleges and
universities can pay dividends in developing
loyal, skilled teams for technology-rich business
environments.
“The Bradenton Area’s successful employers
know the value of investing in their workforce.
Talent is their ultimate advantage. On-the-job
training is one of several proven, effective
tools available to make that happen.”
Ted Ehrlichman, President & CEO
CareerSource Suncoast
“Shadowing
Sharon Hillstrom,
the EDC’s
president and
CEO, gave
me a better
understanding
of economic
development
and opened my eyes to the wide range of
careers available to young people in the
Bradenton Area.”
