Global warming, pollution ofwater due to stagnation and heavyuse of agrochemicals have helpedthe growth of an algae in Rajaratatanks spreading kidney disease, arecent study reveals.

A team of scholars led by ablood diseases specialist from theUniversity of Peradeniya, Dr.Dhammika Menike Dissanayake, has found that there are 18 types ofa poisonous algae by the name‘Bluegreen Algae’ which spread thekidney disease.

Presenting the findings of the

investigation to politicaland civil society stake-holders on Tuesday atthe Anuradhapura YovunNikethanaya auditorium,Dr Dissanayake said thatmore than 2200 kidneypatients have alreadybeen identified from theNorth Central Province.Nearly 3000 have suc-cumbed to the disease.

The team carried outan investigation to specif-ically determine the rea-son for contracting the disease. Itrevealed that the drinking of watercontaminated with a poison emitted

by 15 types ofAlgae in the irri-gation water wasthe reason for themalfunctioning ofthe kidneys.

Dr.Dissanayake saidthat the main rea-son for the spreadof these algae wasthe soaring tem-perature in theenvironment. Shesaid the tempera-

ture in the region had furtherincreased. In 1960 the average tem-perature in Anuradhapura was 31.5

degrees Celsius. This has increasedto 32.5 degrees in 2001. The increas-ing temperature, which was a resultof environmental degradation, paves the way for the spread andfurther growth of the BluegreenAlgae.

A suitable environment had tobe created to overcome this situa-tion. As such, she added that discus-sions are already in progress withthe related establishments to takenecessary action. Dr. MenikeDissanayake is of the view thatimmediate action had to be taken toplant trees and restructure the irri-gation network so that the water ispurified.
