Global warming, pollution of water due to stagnation and heavy use of agrochemicals have helped the growth of an algae in Rajarata tanks spreading kidney disease, a recent study reveals. A team of scholars led by a blood diseases specialist from the University of Peradeniya, Dr. Dhammika Menike Dissanayake, has found that there are 18 types of a poisonous algae by the name ‘Bluegreen Algae’ which spread the kidney disease. Presenting the findings of the investigation to political and civil society stake- holders on Tuesday at the Anuradhapura Yovun Nikethanaya auditorium, Dr Dissanayake said that more than 2200 kidney patients have already been identified from the North Central Province. Nearly 3000 have suc- cumbed to the disease. The team carried out an investigation to specif- ically determine the rea- son for contracting the disease. It revealed that the drinking of water contaminated with a poison emitted by 15 types of Algae in the irri- gation water was the reason for the malfunctioning of the kidneys. Dr. Dissanayake said that the main rea- son for the spread of these algae was the soaring tem- perature in the environment. She said the tempera- ture in the region had further increased. In 1960 the average tem- perature in Anuradhapura was 31.5 degrees Celsius. This has increased to 32.5 degrees in 2001. The increas- ing temperature, which was a result of environmental degradation, paves the way for the spread and further growth of the Bluegreen Algae. A suitable environment had to be created to overcome this situa- tion. As such, she added that discus- sions are already in progress with the related establishments to take necessary action. Dr. Menike Dissanayake is of the view that immediate action had to be taken to plant trees and restructure the irri- gation network so that the water is purified. Global warming the cause of Rajarata kidney disease – Study Dr. Saman Weerasinghe receives his appointment letter from President Mahinda Rajapaksa last week. Secretary to the president Lalith Weeratunga is also in the picture. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed Dr. Saman Weerasinghe as an advisor to the president last week. Dr. Weerasinghe is the chairman of many multinational and local com- panies and also serves as a consultant in the international section of the Moscow Medical academy. An old boy of Mahinda College, Galle, Dr. Weerasinghe pursued high- er studies in Russia after winning a scholarship in 1980s. He graduated with a 1st Class honours degree from the Moscow Medical Academy in Russia. He served as vice president of Russia-Sri Lanka Friendship Society and also as the International Secretary of the Sri Lanka – Russia Friendship Society. He has done much to strengthen the friendship between Sri Lanka and Russia over last two decades. In June, this year, the Russian parliament awarded an honorary diploma and a medal to him for his contribution to the upliftment of edu- cation, culture and humanitarian services in the Asian region. Appointed Presidential Advisor A special commemorative function jointly organized by Caritas Sri Lanka and the SEDEC Institute to Commemorate International Migrants’ Day was held recently at the SEDEC Auditorium, Kinsey Road, Colombo under the auspices of the Minister of External Affairs, Prof. G. L. Peiris. Lectures and discus- sions on problems, the abuse and harassment faced by Sri Lankan women working as housemaids and initiatives to be taken as solutions in this regard, were a part of the proceedings. Jagath Gunawardena’s mother passes away The High Commission of India Colombo has announced the offer of Forty (40) scholarships for Sri Lankan Nationals under the “Scheme of Scholarship for Nationals of Sri Lanka” for undergraduate courses and five (05) scholarships under the “Commonwealth Scholarship/Fellowship plan” for postgraduate cours- es in various Indian Universities, during the forthcoming academic year 2011/12. The High Commission of India selects meritorious young Sri Lankan nationals for these scholarships, in con- sultation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Sri Lanka, for pursuing various under- graduate and postgraduate courses in different universi- ties. The Ministry of Higher Education has invited appli- cations from eligible candi- dates and the last date for submission of duly filled application forms is 17th January, 2011 All scholarships cover full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course and students are also paid a monthly sustenance allowance. The scholarship also covers accommodation and an annual grant for books and stationary. Besides, all ICCR scholars in India are provided full healthcare facilities, first class train fare and an annu- al grant for educational tours to various parts of the coun- try, apart from several other benefits. President Mahinda Rajapaksa hasappointed Dr. Saman Weerasinghe asan advisor to the president last week.

Dr. Weerasinghe is the chairmanof many multinational and local com-panies and also serves as a consultantin the international section of theMoscow Medical academy.

An old boy of Mahinda College,Galle, Dr. Weerasinghe pursued high-er studies in Russia after winning ascholarship in 1980s. He graduatedwith a 1st Class honours degree fromthe Moscow Medical Academy inRussia.

He served as vice president ofRussia-Sri Lanka Friendship Societyand also as the InternationalSecretary of the Sri Lanka – RussiaFriendship Society.

He has done much to strengthenthe friendship between Sri Lanka andRussia over last two decades.

In June, this year, the Russianparliament awarded an honorarydiploma and a medal to him for hiscontribution to the upliftment of edu-cation, culture and humanitarianservices in the Asian region.

The High Commission ofIndia Colombo hasannounced the offer ofForty (40) scholarships forSri Lankan Nationals underthe “Scheme of Scholarshipfor Nationals of Sri Lanka”for undergraduate coursesand five (05) scholarshipsunder the “CommonwealthScholarship/Fellowshipplan” for postgraduate cours-es in various IndianUniversities, during theforthcoming academic year2011/12.

The High Commission ofIndia selects meritoriousyoung Sri Lankan nationalsfor these scholarships, in con-sultation with the Ministry ofHigher Education,Government of Sri Lanka,for pursuing various under-graduate and postgraduatecourses in different universi-ties. The Ministry of HigherEducation has invited appli-

cations from eligible candi-dates and the last date forsubmission of duly filledapplication forms is 17thJanuary, 2011

All scholarships cover fulltuition fees for the entireduration of the course andstudents are also paid amonthly sustenanceallowance.
