Onthisweekend’sfeastofCorpusChristi,theBodyandBloodofChrist,werejoicethatourSecondGradershavemadetheirFirstHolyCommunion.WeadheretoourLord’swordsof“do this in memory of me.” OurMassismuchmorethanjustareminderorremembrance.OurfaithteachesusthatwearemysticallyconnectedwithChrist’ssacrificeonthecross.ThemostancientdocumentregardingtheEucharistisSt.Paul’sLettertothecityofCorinthashesaysintoday’ssecondreading:
“The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the Body of Christ?”
Thisword“participation”alsomeanspartnership or sharing.Itimpliesunitywithsomeone.ThesacredscripturesandtheconstantbeliefoftheChurchemphasizethatthisunityiswithChristintheEucharist.Nowhereisitmoreclearlyspelledoutthanintoday’sreadings. Now,let’simagine. Imaginethatyouwenttoyourdoctorforaroutinecheck-up.Thelabworkonyourbloodcamebackandthedoctorsawsomethingsshewasconcernedaboutandsentyoutogetsometests.Thetestscamebackwithverybadnews.Thedoctortoldyouthatthetestsshowedyouwouldhaveonlyaboutsixmonthstoliveandthetestswerehighlyreliableandaccurate.Butthedoctorsaidthereisaspecialmedicinethatwasdiscoveredanditwouldcuretheproblem. Shepromisedthatifyoutookthismedicine,amedicinewithnotroublingside-effects,youwouldinall likelihoodenjoygoodhealthforanother20or30years.You’veknownyourdoctorforyears,youknowsheisveryknowledgeableandyou’vealwaystrusted her. Howmuchtimewouldyouspendquestioningherdiagnosis?Woulditbefoolishtotrusther,orfoolishnottotrusther? Jesustellsusintoday’sGospel,ifwewanttoliveforever,wemusteatHisbodyanddrinkHisblood.WouldwebefoolishtotrustwhatHetellsusorfoolishnottotrustwhatHesays?It’sanactoffaithonourpart.And,itisjustasmuchasanactoffaithnow asitwasforJesus’firstfollowers.Becausewhatfollowsisextraordinary!AfterJesuspresentsthisteachingtherewerethosewho“walkedaway”andwouldnotfollowHimanylonger.AndJesusdoesnotgoafterthemandsay:
“Wait! This is just a metaphor! Don’t take me literally!” He does not do that. He lets them go… YouareheretocometoMasseveryweekbecauseyouwanttobelieve;youaretakingJesusatHisownwordsandwanttobein“Communion”withHim.Youdonotwanttowalkaway.Becausefriends,fortheother78%ofCatholics(beforeCovid-19)whodonotcometomassregularly–IguaranteetheydonothaveagoodunderstandingoftheEucharist,ofwhatitmeanstoparticipateinwhatwedohere! Yes,totrulycomprehendtheEucharisticmysterymaybeoneofthebiggestchallengesofourfaith.But it isalsothebiggestcomfort in our faith for thosewhobelieve. Inourfirstreadingtoday,MosestoldGod’speoplenottoforgetwhatGodhaddoneforthem.Today,weareinspirednottoforgetwhatJesusdoesandcontinuestodoforusthroughtheEucharist.
What is Ordinary Time?
ChristmasTimeandEasterTimehighlightthecentralmysteriesofthePaschalMystery,namely,theincarnation,deathonthecross, resurrection,andascensionof JesusChrist,andthedescentof theHolySpiritatPentecost.TheSundaysandweeksofOrdinaryTime,ontheotherhand,takeusthroughthelifeofChrist.Thisisthetimeofconversion.ThisislivingthelifeofChrist.OrdinaryTimeisatimeforgrowthandmaturation,atimeinwhichthemysteryofChristiscalledtopenetrateevermoredeeplyintohistoryuntilallthingsarefinallycaughtupinChrist.Thegoal,towardwhichallofhistoryisdirected,isrepresentedbythefinalSundayinOrdinaryTime,theSolemnityofOurLordJesusChrist,KingoftheUniverse.
