WorkshopDescrip-onUndertaking a suicide risk assessment is notwithout itscomplexi6es.Onesizedoesnotfitall.Thisadvancedlevelworkshop provides the opportunity for par6cipants todepth their knowledge and competency in the “art” ofassessment and management of suicide throughempathe6c dialogue rather than a more tradi6onalassessment interview process. Par6cipants will explorehow factors such as nuance, context, culture, gender,socio-economicbackground,thequalityandlengthofthetherapeu6c rela6onship impact on the process and theoutcomesofanassessment.

The workshop provides detailed cri6cal analysis of thera6onale and research that informs the ques6ons in astandardassessmentprocess. This assistspar6cipants tomore able to confidently and competently adapt thecontentandprocessoftheassessmenttobestmeetthecontext and theneedsof the client, par6cularly in crisissitua6ons. Italsofacilitatesgreaterdepthofenquiryanddoes not constrain the prac66oner to ques6ons on theassessmentsheet.

Barry has proven leadership over 30 years at local,na6onal and interna6onal levels in using communityini6a6ves and strength-based approaches to improveindividual and communitywellbeing and the preven6onof suicide. His work has strongly focussed on suicidepreven6on, assessment and management of suicidalityand postven6on including leadership of New Zealand'sfirstna6onalresponsetoyouthsuicideinthelate1980s.

Barry has lectured and mentored programmes, bothna6onally and interna6onally, and been appointed tonumerous government advisory commiPees on mentalwellbeingpromo6onand suicidepreven6on. In 2016hewas awarded the NSW Mental Health Commissioner'sCommunity Champion Award in recogni6on of hisoutstandingcontribu6ontomentalwellbeingandsuicidepreven6on

As a Health Sociologist and Public Health prac66oner,Barryhasa long-terminterest inthesocialdeterminantsofsuiciderisk,especiallytheroleofgenderandhebringsawealthofknowledgeandpassion for the reducing theimpactandratesofdepressionandsuicideinmen.

AXeranumberofyearsoverseas,BarryreturnedtoNewZealandin2017bothpassionateandenthusedtomakeacontribu6onsuicidepreven6oninthiscountry.
