TOP FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SCHOOL NUTRITION WE ARE PART OF THE SCHOOL: Providing healthy meals to our students powers their minds to learn during the school day.
WE ARE EXTREMELY TRANSPARENT: Please contact us if you have questions, concerns, or are seeking information about any
menu items etc.
WE’RE NOT PERFECT, BUT WE’RE WORKING HARD: When serving over 3,000 meals each day, inventory becomes a challenge.
At times we’ve run out of popular items and so has the food distributor, especially at the beginning and end of the year. Both schools and
distributors are trying to guess which items are going to be selected. When several options are available this might happen. Please notify
our office if you child mentions this occurrence to you. WE PROVIDE UNMATCHED VALUE: Each day we get to serve healthy, nutritious meals to the world’s greatest students! Many
people don’t realize that we operate as a self-supporting business in the school district. That means we receive very limited dollars from
the district and must use the money we bring in for one meal to pay for the next. We always invest 100% back to our students we serve.
WE ARE MORE THAN JUST CHICKEN NUGGETS AND PIZZA: We’ve worked hard to add new menu items to the menu. We
offer lots of different menu choices and test products throughout the school year with students to meet their taste preferences. We are
flexible and agile. Yes, we have very strict nutrition standards, but we’re always seeking new ideas and products to introduce to our
students. If you have suggestions, please send them our way.

All Schools in the District will be CEP for the 2019-2020 School Year.

BREAKFAST STARTS A SUCCESSFUL DAY… Studies indicate a direct relationship between eating breakfast and performance in school. Parents find it convenient
during the morning rush to count on their child eating breakfast at school. Breakfast is available in all Fleming
County Public Schools at NO COST to all students. Breakfast includes a choice of 1% or skim milk, a variety of
100% fruit juices, featured entrees, a variety of whole grain cereals, and yogurt.
What is a Reimbursable Breakfast?
A reimbursable breakfast offers at least 4 food items from 3 components: Fruit/Juice
Grains
Milk
A reimbursable meal MUST have at least 3 food items (one of those being a
fruit and/or vegetable)
**There is a difference between meal components and meal items.
…AND A NUTRITIOUS LUNCH WILL CARRY YOU ALL THE WAY! Healthy and nutritious school lunches are available every day to all Fleming County students at NO COST. Menus
are planned to meet the USDA requirement for calories, protein, iron, calcium and vitamins A and C. Over a week,
menus average less than 30% calories from fat and less than 10% calories from saturated fat. Lunch menus feature
many low-fat and all whole grain products, as well as daily fresh fruit and vegetable choices. During the 2019-20
school year, the School Nutrition department will continue focusing on signage to explain the meal pattern which
will help students understand healthy portion sizes.
What is a Reimbursable Lunch?
A reimbursable lunch offers 5 Components:
Vegetables
Fruit
Meat or Meat Alternate
Grains
Milk
A reimbursable meal MUST contain ½ cup of fruit or vegetable AND at least 2 other full components.
PRESCHOOL: Preschool menus vary slightly from the elementary Offer vs. Serve menu due to USDA
Guidelines.
ALA CARTE Additional menu items are always available ala carte for those students who want a little extra. In addition, your
student’s school may offer other snacks and beverage items ala carte. All snacks and beverages meet the SMART
SNACK Guidelines that were effective July 1, 2014.
SMART SNACKS The Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards support better health for our kids and echo the good work already
taking place in schools across the country. The standards preserve flexibility for time-honored traditions like
fundraisers and bake sales, and provide ample transition time for schools. USDA is committed to working closely
with students, parents, school stakeholders and the food and beverage industries to implement the new guidelines,
and make the healthy choice the easy choice for America’s young people.
Principals will be provided updates throughout the year. Visit www.fns.usda.gov for more information.
MEAL ACCOMMODATIONS We recognize the growing number of students who attend our schools that have meal accommodations. We want to
minimize the risk by asking parents to provide a signed physician statement for your student which has the allergy
and the specific modification needed. The information on the physician statement is not only important to the school
nutrition department, but also the school nurse who communicates to teachers and other school staff.
Managing food modifications is a shared responsibility between the family and the school. Forms to start the process
are available on the district website, school nutrition cafeterias, and the school nutrition office.
LOCAL GOODNESS Our School Nutrition Department is excited to announce that we will
be having many Kentucky Proud products and Fleming County
produce in our schools this year. We are committed to serving our
students as many locally produced foods as possible. Serving foods
grown in Kentucky decreases the distance the food travels and allows
us to serve it at its freshest while supporting Kentucky’s farm families.
SHARE ZONE TABLE The Share Zone Table in your child’s school is designed so students can leave or take unwanted pre-packaged,
non-perishable foods that were on the serving line at breakfast and lunch. The following guidelines are included
in the HACCP Plan (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points):
Accept only foods that do not require temperature control.
Accept tamper proof, sealed, prepackaged foods in their unopened, original containers.
Share Table will be located away from potential cross contamination areas.
Prevent placement of foods brought from home.
Allow only students (not adults) to take foods from the Share Table.
Allow students to take an item back to the classroom for consumption later in the school day.
Trained school nutrition staff will physically observe Share Table a minimum of three times during
lunch.
Please encourage your child/students to take only foods they plan to eat, recognizing food items needed for a
reimbursable meal. Make sure to discuss with your child/student if they have food allergies to ask questions
about products before consuming. One of the items during breakfast and lunch meal service that tend to be
confusing is milk. Milk is a required food component that has to be offered to students, but it is not a mandatory
item for students to take.
Please make sure you check with the school nutrition staff by calling the school office and asking to speak to the
nutrition manager if you have any questions.
