OBJECTIVE AND OUTCOMES
Candidates should be able to:
• Describe and explain the CPU as fetching, decoding and executing of instructions and what affects its speed.
• Identify and explain at least two logic gates.
• All students will demonstrate an understanding of CPU’s and Logic Gates.

This is often described as the brain of the computer.
The purpose of the CPU is to process data. It is where all the searching, sorting, calculating and decision making takes place in the computer.
FETCH, DECODE & EXECUTE CYCLE
•Describe and explain the CPU as fetching, decoding and executing of instructions.
As soon as the computer is switched on is runs a reoccurring constant fetch, decode and execute cycle.
1) Instructions are fetched from the memory.
2) Instructions are decoded and prepared
3) Instructions are executed.
Task: Make a copy of the information on this slide
TASK
You are going to be human CPU’s
• Each person will prepare a simple instruction using the code – for example stand up or sit down. You will then fetch another persons code within the class.
• You will then decode the instruction given to you.
• Before passing it on and the third person executing the instruction.
•Describe and explain the CPU as fetching, decoding and executing of instructions.

WHAT AFFECTS CPU SPEED?
Clock Speed Cores
WHAT AFFECTS CPU SPEED?
Clock Speed Cores
Task: Make a note – this might be useful later ;)
The clock speed is the number of fetch, decode and execute cycles a CPU can run per second.
So the higher the clock speed the more work a CPU can get done.
The more cores in a processor the more instructions it can run simultaneously.
So the more cores, again, the more work your CPU can get done.
BINARY LOGIC
•Identify and explain at least two logic gate.
AND Gate
Both inputs must be a 1 for the output to be a 1.
OR Gate
Either inputs must be a 1 for the output to be a 1.
NOT Gate
This is also known as the reverser gate – Whatever the input is the opposite is output
TASK
Complete the worksheet.
Your teacher will direct you to the correct place on Moodle.
•Identify and explain at least two logic gate.
Extension: Can you solve
this Logic Circuit?
PLENARY
Create a text message conversation involving two main questions that explain two things we have learnt about today.
Example;
• What does the CPU do?
• What does CPU stand for?
• Do you need a CPU in a
computer?
• What are the three logic gates?
• How does a NOT gate work?
