And itcontinues; onlyrecently Jay-Z aimed alyrical jibe at his ex-best pal Kanye West inhis latest album 4:44.For those new to theterm, a diss track iswhen one singer takesa dig at a rival throughtheir music. It’s a situa-tion unique in the hip-hop scene. Given the factthat hip-hop has nowbecome popular in main-stream Bollywood movies, itwas only a matter of timethat rappers started releasingdiss tracks. Since the past threeyears, a number of desi rappersstarted releasing such tracks andresolving or escalating disputes andsleighs, both imagined and unimag-ined with other rappers. BADSHAH’S UNDERHAND DIG AT FORMER
GROUP MEMBER In an interview that Badshah gave this year, herevealed how Honey Singh did not give himcredit for the time him and Raftaar wrote forthe rapper and took him for a ride. The songsin question included the hits Brown Rangand Dope Shope. So, in is track titledBandook, which fans say is a total diss trackaimed at Honey, Badshah says, “Loot keauroon ke paise bana tu rich (boy),” Andthen he adds, “Meri salah tujhe bas yahihai, ke soch samajh ke kariyo jo bhi karnahai, Coz Karma is a bitch (boy).”

Formerly a member of the urban music group MafiaMundeer, Raftaar is angry like hell. His bone of con-tention is Yo Yo Honey Singh; his ‘brother’ from thesame group, which fell apart in a spectacular fashionafter Badshah and Raftaar quit the group claimingthat Singh fleeced them. The track Raftaar firstreleased after quitting Mafia Mundeer was FukraFlow, where he dissed Honey Singh. He called himout quite clearly with his ‘Yo Yo’ title and said he is anauto tune ‘bot’. While now it’s all quiet on tht front, you never know when the fragile peace can bebroken.

Butwhat remainsto be seen is,does having somany marqueeartistes in onealbum workout well? Is itjust a gim-mick, or dothey collaborate with Harrisand create music that canstand out, independently?It’s a yes on all counts. In hisfifth album, Harris has set-tled in on a lazy, disco soundwith songs that are all abouthaving a good time, and bar-ring one, the album doesn’ttake itself seriously at all.
Starting with FrankOcean’s Slide, a superbly pro-duced track, which takes oninfidelity and one-nightstands in a frank manner.Kudos to Ocean for the tightwriting and Harris for aunique chorus. what happened with banker turned singer,Ameya Dabli. A chemical engineer with a man-agement degree, Ameya gave up a 15-year corpo-rate career, to follow his heart and that has tilldate, earned him over 1,500 concerts across 15countries.

Genre: BollywoodFinally, here’s a Hindi filmthat can justify all thePunjabi-ish numbers in itsalbum! Mubarakan is amad caper about a Punjabifamily and the composershave exploited the popularityPunjabi tunes enjoy amongBollywood audience, to theiradvantage.
First in line is AmaalMallik’s The Goggle Song, whichpromises to be the ‘shades songof the year’ after last year’s KalaChashma. A fun number, thissends out great dance floor vibes.While the arrangements arepeppy, especially the recurringstring section, the band of singers— Sonu Nigam, Armaan Malik,Amaal, Tulsi Kumar and NeetiMohan — take it slow, letting theinstruments infuse all the energy.
Mubarakan, composed by RishiRich and Yash Anand, starts with stat-ic radio voices. While tunes from theretro years play in the background, mil-lennial sounds take the foreground. Thesong, rendered by Juggy D, YashNarvekar, Badshah and Sukriti Kakar, isthe shortest in the album and does nothingmore than serving as just the title track.Amaal’s other song for the film, JattJaguar, is foot-tappingly Punjabi. WhileNavraj Hans begins the song with a Punjabitadka, Vishal Dadlani takes it forward withfull gusto. Apeksha Dandekar’s section isquite flavoursome, too. Haathon Mein ThheHaath is a slow, Sufi-inspired pathos number,composed by Gourov-Roshin. This one, too, has
several singers going behind the mic — Papon,Altamash Faridi, Aditi Singh Sharma andArpita Mukherjee — but is really nothing towrite home about.
A catchphrase-and-tune remix of Pakistanisinger Hassan Jahangir’s popular number,Hawa Hawa, is the pick of the album. Withquirky lyrics by Kumaar and unrestrainedsinging by Mika Singh and Prakriti Kakar,Gourov-Roshin’s reworked version is alreadya chartbuster.
The soundtrack ends with Dil DhadkeLouder Louder, another Gourov-Roshin com-position. This one is a cool fusion of modernbeats and folk tunes. The entire song is a playon the popular Punjabi call, Baari BarsiKhatan Gaya Si, and Rinku Giri and PujaBasnet have handled it well.
There’s not much variety in the album, butwe like how the composers have maintained asoundscape, with all the numbers having aPunjabi flavour (some may find it monoto-nous, though).

through abhangas (poetries bysaints) by saints like Eknath,Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram.Comprising Swapnil Tarphe (bassguitarist), Dushyant Deorukhkar(drummer), Viraj Acharya (percus-sionist), Piyush Acharya (harmo-nium), Suyog Gosavi (vocalist) andAjay Vavhal (acoustic guitarist), itwas formed by Swapnil andDushyant, both drummers in theircollege. Barely two years old, theyhave already crossed the 100-gig mark.
HOW A GIG CHANGED THEBAND’S BELIEF…Unsure of whether or not they willappeal to the masses, the membershad their share of doubts. “We hadan urge to raise social awarenessand didn’t know how poetries bythese saints would work with thecrowd. However, our gig duringGudi Padwa last year in Girgaonturned out to be the turning pointof our career. Besides getting moreshows and funding, we gathered a
strong belief in our work and itboosted our morale. Post that, wewere featured in a video that wasshown on an entertainment chan-nel, which brought a Marathi bandstraight to people’s home. Theappreciation we received thereonwas extremely overwhelming,”says Swapnil.
TRYING TO SPREAD THEGOOD VIBETaking up popular verses likeAmhi Bi Ghadalo, ChandanacheHaath, Deh Dewache Mandir fortheir songs, the band fuses theseabhangas with jazz, rock, reggae,Indian classical, folk and othergenres. Speaking about the band’saim and name, Swapnil adds, “Wewant to disseminate the saints’messages in a non-conventionalfashion. Today’s youth needs toknow about these poetries, so wedecided to ‘post’ these verses in aform they like. That’s how theband’s name came along.” We wishAbhanga, which means indestruc-tible, encourages people to live apeaceful life.”
