urgeNtAs we all know we have a safety issue within the Enclave due to speeding, not stopping at stop signs and incorrect parking. Just recently a person had a close call, almost getting hit by a car going through a stop sign. There is constant talk about the situation and many suggestions are being made. We are looking at all suggestions. However, more signs and speed bumps will not necessarily solve the problem. It is not just a problem for the HOA Board, Property Manager or the Safety & Security Committee to solve. It is a community problem. It is up to all us to solve.
We have 349 households within the community. It is the responsibility of each household to ensure that their guests and vendors obey the rules. It isn’t any more complicated than that. The only traffic within the community, with a few exceptions, is due to us. We are creating the traffic; therefore, we should be able to control it. Everyone should take a moment and think about their responsibilities. Let’s not become
the community that has a fatality.Board of Directors

Knit with Friends is a group of Enclave residents who get together weekly to knit and crochet. In addition to crafting, there is also a lot of socializing. We started out knitting sweaters for the Outreach Group to donate to Knit for Kids. To date we have knitted and shipped over 900 sweaters. We also work on our own knitting projects. Our crafters have a range of experience, from beginners to over 20 years of experience. We meet at the Clubhouse every Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Feel free to join us if you enjoy knitting or crocheting. If you would like to learn, I’m sure one of our seasoned crafters won’t mind giving you a lesson or two.
NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, January 13, 2020Craft Room at the Clubhouse, 2:00 p.m.Topic: Current EventsIn our December meeting John Matiskella led a very interesting discussion of drones, which are increasing rapidly in numbers and complexity and becoming part of our lives. They are used in recreation and in commercial and military applications. Amazon plans to use drones for package delivery at some time in the future. For the January 13 meeting, we will select a discussion topic just prior to the meeting and inform the regular members via email. If you would like to be included in our email list, please send a message to me at [email protected].

Have you ever asked yourself, “What do I have to do to get a good cup of coffee, short of moving to Colombia or Brazil?” You may even ask yourself, “Which country produces the best coffee, and where can I buy it.” But even more important would be, “How will I know that the coffee I purchase is really the coffee it says it is”.Buying high quality coffee should be nearly effortless, but it’s not. Most often, you’re putting your money into products that are sub-standard and misleading facsimiles of the real thing. So beware, although coffee is grown in equatorial zones throughout the world…..not all coffees are created equal. There are more than 6,000 species of coffee plants, however, the two most commercially important types are called “Arabica” and “Robusta”.ARABICA: Arabica coffees are grown primarily in Central & South America and account for over 60% of world production. They are considered the highest quality beans. Arabica plants grow best in high altitudes and produce a very flavorful and aromatic coffee, very low in caffeine and acidity. They are hand picked daily from the finest of trees. I prefer “100% Columbian” coffee because I know that the highest quality of Arabica is exclusively grown there, and unlike beans from other regions, all Colombian coffee is carefully “washed,” this process releases many impurities and acid agents, which gives it its rich taste and aroma.ROBUSTA: Robusta coffees are grown primarily in Africa and Asia and account for approximately 40% of world production. Because they are grown in lower altitudes and in hotter temperatures, they are less desirable. Since they are machine picked, you may get unripe, and rotten beans mixed in with the good ones. Generally, and with a few exceptions, Robusta coffees are considered by the trade to be less flavorful and aromatic than Arabica. Consequently, they are widely used in instant and less expensive coffee blends. It produces a cup with twice the amount of caffeine of Arabica and is very high in acidity (and heartburn). Robusta are not grown in Colombia or anywhere else in the Americas.I would suggest that the next time you shop for a can or package of coffee, take the time to read the label. In most cases, coffee companies will identify the source or
from the “grounds” upSubmitted by Peter Baer
type of beans used. If it simply reads “100 Pure Coffee,” it’s probably a cheaper blend of Robusta. If you are new to specialty coffees, beware of blends. When buying a “blend” you may be getting a few of the pricy beans and a whole bunch of inferior beans added to make up the difference, or you may not be getting any of the pricy beans at all. Read the label. I recently spotted some Kona coffee, and Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee on the shelves of two major warehouse stores selling for approximately $8 a pound. Rather odd since the wholesale cost of those coffees runs between $30 and $40 a pound. Upon closer examination I discovered that it was indeed a “blend.” Now remember that according to current regulations, it only takes a single Jamaican bean added to a balance of junky robustas to make up a “blend” of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Hawaii is a bit stricter, they require roasters to place a minimum of 10% of Kona coffees into their “blends,” that’s one in every ten beans. Some consolation! Avoid any coffee that includes the term “blend” on their label (Classic Blend, Special Blend, Superior Blend, etc.) Stick with 100% Arabica or 100% Columbian regardless of the brand name. Trust me, there is no difference between Maxwell House, Folgers, Hills Bros., or Chock 100% Colombian since it all comes from the same place. After all, it’s a product of nature, they just place it into a package with their name on it.Finally, for you price conscious shoppers, the world’s most expense coffee comes from Sumatra. Workers there follow a gourmet monkey around who consumes only the choicest coffee beans. By hand picking (and we hope cleaning) what he excretes, they obtain “Kopi Lawak” coffee, which sells for over $500 per pound.

comedy corner: serenitySubmitted by Hadassa Buxbaum
Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, ‘How old was your husband?’ ‘98,’ she replied.... ‘Two years older than me’ ‘So you’re 96,’ the undertaker commented.. She responded, ‘Hardly worth going home, is it? Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman: ‘And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?’ the reporter asked... She simply replied, ‘No peer pressure.’ The nice thing about being senile is you can hide your own Easter eggs and have fun finding them. I’ve sure gotten old! I’ve had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I’m half blind, can’t hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can’t remember if I’m 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver’s license. I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over. My memory’s not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory’s not as sharp as it used to be. Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out. It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker. These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, ‘For fast relief.’ THE SENILITY PRAYER : Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference. Now, I think you’re supposed to share this with 5 or 6, maybe 10 others. Oh heck, give it to a bunch of your friends if you can remember who they are! Always Remember This: You don’t stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing!

We want to share important information about fraud prevention. The information has been provided by the Office of the Attorney General, New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs prepared an Anti-Fraud Toolkit, which was designed to provide the information needed to recognize and avoid scams. One topic that is part of the Anti-Fraud Toolkit is entitled “Top Ten Red Flags That It Might Be A Scam,” which is described as a simple list of red flags to watch out for when solicited in person, by phone call, by mail, or through the internet. The red flags are as follows:1. You are told not to tell anybody about your alleged “prize” or “winnings.” 2. You are pressured to “act quickly,” without thinking, to “take advantage of a great opportunity,” or to “avoid criminal or legal proceedings.”3. You get an offer of “guaranteed” investment returns, lottery winnings, or promises of free money. 4. During the course of any purported sales pitch, debt collection, or other interaction, you are asked to provide sensitive personal information such as your social security number, credit card data, bank account number, email, PIN number, or your personal passwords.5. A caller avoids answering your questions about who they are and how they got your number, and gets defensive when you ask if they are legitimate.6. A caller threatens you with arrest or legal action, becomes hostile, or uses profanity if you don’t “pay up!”7. Someone tells you to pay money up front before you can receive your purported winnings or prize.8. You receive “official” documents by email or regular mail with misspellings, poor grammar, and/or fake-looking logos.9. You are directed to send money in nontraditional ways; by wire transfer, money orders, pre-paid debit cards, or even cash wrapped in newspaper.10. A caller won’t let you hang up the phone, or a solicitor won’t let you close the door, even after you say you’re not interested. There is also a chapter focusing on “Common Phone
Scams,” which describes common examples of these. Several examples include the following.Someone who claims to be calling from the IRS, a credit card company, or another agency says you, or your spouse, owes them money. If you don’t send cash or pay by credit card immediately, you will be taken to court or your credit will be ruined. Another illustration in the Anti-Fraud Toolkit might be someone who claims to be calling on behalf of Medicare or Medicaid with questions about a claim or to replace your insurance card, but first you must provide personal information-----data that can be used to file false claims in your name or steal your identity. Another instance would be a call announcing you have won a free vacation or a large cash prize but you need pay a prize tax, release fee, or other related expense to collect. Another example cited was “technical support representative” claiming to be from a computer company calls to warn you of a serious problem with your computer. The caller urges you to download a program, or give him access to your computer, to fix the problem. That disreputable person can then install spyware to steal personal information stored on your computer. There is a page in the Anti-Fraud Toolkit with a list of important phone numbers and online contacts. For example, if you think you have been cheated or scammed, you can file a complaint with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs by phone at 800-242-5846 or 973-504-6200. You can also file a complaint online at: njconsumeraffairs.gov/pages/file-a-complaint.aspx; or, if you are about to make an investment and want to make sure that the person offering the investment opportunity is properly registered, you may contact the New Jersey Bureau of Securities at 866-446-8378.There is also a Directory of County Consumer Affairs Offices, which is contact information for county consumer affairs offices throughout New Jersey.Other topics include “Common Mail Scams”, which briefly describes scams that may be reaching you through the mail and tips on how to avoid such scams. There is also information on “Common Door-to-Door Scams”, which describes scams arising from door-to-door solicitations, including charities scams and contracting scams, and tips on how to avoid them. All the topics can be accessed at fightingfraud.nj.gov. The phone number for the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs is 800-242-5846.

thank You
Thanks to the following residents who helped to decorate the clubhouse for the Christmas season as well as putting the windscreens at the tennis courts in the winter position. Without your help this could not have been accomplished!ladies gentlemenBarbara Clements Charlie CannataMary Heidelberger Jack Clements Mario Grillo John Heidelberger Art Hensler Dennis Hoffman Ken Kahn Tony Lusnia Bob MacGregor John Matiskella Tom Moriarty Tim Murphy Nick Quadrel Ken Scianna Kishore Shah John Strouse
Best Regards,Tom Moriarty, Clubhouse Chairman
As Chairperson of the DaVinci Social Group, I want to thank the Executive Committee of Mary Heidelberger, Maryann Cherichello, Joe Russo, Kishore Shah, Lina Aloi, and Bruce Rollier for the support in the planning and execution of the many events offered to our members. This year was an especially difficult as several members of the Executive Committee moved from the Enclave Community and we lost one of our charter members with the unexpected passing of Mary Ann Ciccone, who was always there to do whatever was required to put the show on. However, in spite of these losses, we were still able to complete the schedule as planned. I also want to thank the DaVinci Social Group membership for all their support in attending the functions presented and helping with the cleanup and uplifting comments of praise for the job well done.At the Christmas celebration, we collected over 50 toys from the membership which were delivered to the Seeds of Service in Mantoloking for the needy. The people there couldn’t have been more appreciative for what we did to make Christmas for some child happier. As we look ahead to the upcoming year, we are hopeful to keep the DaVinci Social Group together providing the events we have come to enjoy with our fellow Enclave friends.

Neighbor to NeighborDear Fellow Enclavians, We would like to expand this column as a means to help people help each other. If you have a particular skill, such as teaching a card game or knitting, crocheting, or painting etc..., you might be able to help someone here who would like to learn. Or maybe you might be a skilled electrician, plumber or carpenter? Since many of us take an occasional flight from a local airport, someone might be willing to offer his/her chauffeuring services for a reasonable fee. There’s virtually no limit to the help that we might afford each other. So, if you have a skill to share, or need, just fill out a request form (forms are available in the Enclave Lites mailbox) and return it to Enclave Lites slot in the clubhouse library, and we’ll include your request in a coming issue of Lites. We reserve the right to exclude any request we might find unacceptable.
