ed, though," Shively said.

So he enlisted in the

United States Navy atthe recruitment office in

Arkansas City. They told

him, however, they want-

ed him to graduate from

high school first.

As soon as he graduat-

ed in May 1970, he went

back down to the office

to formally file enlist-

ment papers.

"When I got home my

draft notice from the

Army was in my mail-

box," Shively said. "The

Army didn't get me

heard their food waslousy and I didn't want

any part of that."

vision series "McHale's

Navy."

them skiing behind theboat and having a really

good time," Shively said.

"I guess that's what I

wanted, but it didn't turn

out exactly like that."

But after four years of

active duty and two years

in the reserves, Shively

said he's glad for the

experiences he had in the

Navy.

One of his most mem-

orable Navy assignments

was the recovery of the

Apollo XV CommandModule as the astronauts

returned from their flight

to the moon.

Shively's ship, the USS

Okinawa, was the first

LPH-3 to participate in

the space program. In

April 1968 the Okinawarecovered the Command

Module of the Apollo VI,

the last unmanned mis-

sion of the series.

On July 26, 1971, a

Saturn V launch vehi-

cle boosted the Apollo

15 spacecraft from
