Shively said growing up he'd watched the tele- vision series "McHale's Navy." "You know, it showed them skiing behind the boat and having a really good time," Shively said. "I guess that's what I wanted, but it didn't turn out exactly like that." But after four years of active duty and two years in the reserves, Shively said he's glad for the experiences he had in the Navy. One of his most mem- orable Navy assignments was the recovery of the Apollo XV Command Module as the astronauts returned from their flight to the moon. Shively's ship, the USS Okinawa, was the first LPH-3 to participate in the space program. In April 1968 the Okinawa recovered the Command Module of the Apollo VI, the last unmanned mis- sion of the series.
