CONGREGATION MEETING At our meeting today, our new Leaders' team for 2016-17 will be elected. Many thanks to the current team who have been very working hard over the past 12 months: Manas Ghosh, Bruce Bennetts (Chairperson), Darlene McGrath (Secretary), Ken Morgan, William Mateo, Robyn and Malcolm Dunbar, Liz de Reland (Minute Secretary) and Samantha Vulawalu. Special thanks to Bruce, our 2015-16 Chairperson, for his conscientious and thoughtful leadership - and to 2015-16 Secretary, Darlene, for her dedicated management of our agendas and correspondence. During the Congregation Meeting, group leaders (or their designates) will share a brief report for the information of others - and written reports will be circulated, both in hard copy and via the website. Many thanks to Ian for chairing the meeting & to all contributors. LENT EVENT FUNDRAISING STALL Our Leigh Memorial congregation's fundraising goal of $250 is getting closer! If we reach this amount, a Zimbabwean Farmer and his or her family will be ale to start a small business - or a Sr-Lankan child with a disability to have access to better quality of education. Thank you to our lovely Sunday School kids for hand-making some unique, international craft items & yummy lolly bags to sell - and to all of our kids, teachers and congregation members who have contributed items for today's stall, inc. cakes and slices. Everyone's generosity throughout Lent Event has been greatly appreciated. LENTEN STUDIES Many thanks to Clive Pearson for the enriching Lenten studies which he has led for us over the past couple of Wednesday & Saturday mornings. Thanks Clive - those of us who attended now know a lot more about Luke! Further study programs, public lectures and other enrichment activities developed by Clive are set to follow. The next edition of the PM congregation's e-magazine E-tree will also be coming out soon! FAREWELL FRANK

The thoughts and prayers of the Leigh Memorial congregation are with Lynn and family following the passing of Frank Boorman last weekend. Frank, a long-serving and generous member of the Leigh Memorial congregation, had been in serious ill health for some time and receiving hospital care. The funeral service will take place at 10.30am on Monday 21 March at Leigh Memorial. Further information: Manas.

WESTMEAD CONGREGATION

Today is a day when we can celebrate Palm Sunday- the beginning of Holy Week. This afternoon we say farewell to Trish Rooney in the afternoon. We know we will soon have the opportunity to welcome her again in a new role as the Chaplain at Westmead Hospital. So if you would like to stay after church and have a light lunch then please join us, and we offer a gold coin donation towards lunch.

We will be forming a group who will look at reviewing the role that is now vacant, which includes the chaplaincy at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. We need to explore whether we do a simple replace for what Trish has been doing or whether there is a new way we can do things. This group will be doing the work in the next 3 months. Stay tuned.

It would be good to have someone from the congregation who would like to represent the congregation at the Presbytery meetings. These are 4 times a year, on either an evening or a weekend. We also need to find some people who would be interested in attending the Mission Zone meeting. These are during the day and Rev Christine is happy to drive.

On Monday 21st

some of the congregational leaders will meet with leaders from Uniting Hospitality to explore some of the changes which will happen for us as we plan for the new Play Group and other activities in a new Activity Centre (demountable). There will be some changes in the church and the addition of a new children’s playground. This is exciting and we will pass on more information when we know it.

Save the date: Open Door carpet bowls will be on Wednesday 23rd

March. All are welcome. We are looking forward to a fun afternoon. We look forward to people from the local Independent Living Villages of Mayflower coming for the morning Service for Maundy Thursday. If you would like to help with morning tea then please let Rev Christine know.

Luke 19:28-40 28 And after Jesus had said these things, he went ahead up to Jerusalem 29 and as he came to Bethpage and Bethany, to the mountain called Olives, he sent two of his disciples 30 saying, “Go into the village opposite in which, on entering, you will find a young colt having been tied, on which, no person has ever sat, untie it and bring it 31 and if anyone should question you, ‘why do you untie it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Master has need of it.’” 32 And those who were sent, having gone, found it just as he told them. 33 And while loosening the colt, its owners said to them, “Why do you untie the colt?” 34 and they said, “The Master has need of it”. 35 And they led it to Jesus, and having thrown their outer coats over it, and they set Jesus upon it. 36 And as he went, they spread out their coats underneath on the road. 37 And when he drew near to the steep descent of the Mount of Olives, all the company of disciples, rejoicing, began to praise God with much noise about all the deeds which they had seen showing power, 38 saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” 39 And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples”. 40 And answering, he said, “I say to you, if they should be silent, even the stones would cry out.” (Translation by Keith Hamilton)

Reflection Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, riding on a young colt. This narrative has given rise to Palm Sunday, though Luke’s telling does not include Palms. In a week when there have been more terror attacks and car bombs across the world that have killed and maimed, the news that 10,000 children have been killed in Syria during the civil war and others forced into child solders, or starved to death, murder on the streets in Melbourne, people accosting visitors for money in Parramatta, the call to peace, seems at once naive, desirable and yet unattainable. On one reading, it did not end well for Jesus; after all, after riding into the world centre of religion on a humble animal, confronting the powers who controlled the opinions such as local civic, government and religious leaders, Jesus was not thanked but crucified. Yet the message of peace was not silenced. It continues to bust out like flowers that bloom, and is as hardened to the task as stones. The reference to stones is interesting. Stones were used to put religious people to death, as compared to the use of a cross for a political death. If the disciples were stoned for so-called blaspheming, the very stones would cry out for peace, and recognise in Jesus the one who can bring peace. Peace between humanity and peace between creation and God. I am reminded of Luke’s resurrection story. Yes Jesus, the one who preached with words and actions the way of peace and reconciliation is put to death, but notice how Luke (24:1) starts his Easter Day “But on the first day of the week, at the crack of dawn . . .” Easter Day begins with a ‘but’ that changes everything. The tomb was empty. The Easter proclamation is that Jesus was raised from the dead. Destruction, anarchy, division, violence, even death, do not have the last word. Ghandi said that tyrants may seem to be invincible for a time, but they always fall, always. The message of peace and reconciliation continues to burst forth. Even the land which can erupt in earthquakes and volcanoes can’t help but provide peaceful scenes that preach tranquillity and point to the one who created. No higher work can we do than work for peace. Not false peace, not cheap peace, but peace that with integrity and honesty that with justice and mercy builds reconciliation. Blessings, Keith Hamilton
