Education plays the most important role in acquiring professional and social skills, and a positive attitude towards face the
challenges of life. Curriculum is a comprehensive plan of any educational programme. It is also one of the means for bringing
about qualitative improvement in an educational system. The Curriculum initiated by the Central Board of Secondary
Education-International (CBSE-i) is a progressive step in making the educational content responsive to global needs. It signifies
the emergence of a fresh thought process in imparting a curriculum which would restore the independence of the learner to
pursue the learning process in harmony with the existing personal, social and cultural ethos.
The CBSE has introduced the CBSE-i curriculum as a pilot project in a few schools outside India in 2010, in classes I and IX and
extended the programme to classes II, VI and X in the session 2011-12. It was further extended to classes III, VII and for Senior
Secondary classes with class XI in the session 2012-13. It is going to be introduced in classes IV, V, VIII and XII in the session
2013-14 in the schools outside India and in classes I, II and III in the schools within the country.
The Senior Secondary stage of education determines the course of life of a student. At this stage, it becomes extremely important
for students to develop the right attitude, a willingness to learn and an understanding of the world around them and to be able to
take the right decisions for their future. The senior secondary curriculum is expected to provide the necessary base for the
growth of knowledge and skills, and thereby enhance a student's potential to face the challenges of global competitiveness. The
CBSE-i Senior Secondary Curriculum aims at developing the desired professional, managerial and communication skills as
required in of the world of work. CBSE-i is for the current session offering curricula in ten subjects i.e. Physics Chemistry,
Biology, Accountancy, Business-Studies, Economics, Engineering Graphics, Home Science, Computer Science, Information
Practices, ICT, English, Mathematics I and Mathematics II. Mathematics at two levels caters to the differing needs of students of
pure sciences and commerce. The curriculum has been designed to nurture multiple intelligences like linguistic or verbal
intelligence, logical mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, sports intelligence, musical intelligence, inter-personal
intelligence and intra-personalintelligence.
The Core skills are the most significant aspects of a learner's holistic growth and learning curve. The objective of this part of the
core of curriculum is to scaffold the learning experiences and to relate tacit knowledge with formal knowledge. This involves
trans-disciplinary linkages that would form the core of the learning process. Perspectives, SEWA (Social Empowerment through
Work and Action), Life Skills and Research would be the constituents of this 'Core'.
The CBSE-i Curriculum evolves by building on learning experiences inside the classroom over a period of time. The Board while
addressing the issues of empowerment with the help of the schools administering this system, strongly recommends that
practising teachers become skil ful and lifelong learners and also transfer their learning experiences to their peers through the
interactive platforms provided by the Board. The success of this curriculum depends upon its effective implementation and it is
expected that the teachers will apply themselves to creating better facilities, developing linkages with the world of work and
fostering conducive environment, as per the recommendations of the curriculum document.

Introduction
In the ancient period, when early Man didn’t have any formal vocal language, at that
time they used Drawing as one of the important communication mediums. Through
drawings encrypted on the cave walls, they used to express their thoughts.
Although now we have numerous fully developed languages but even today, during
the early learning years in a child’s life, when his vocabulary is not completely evolved,
drawing is the best thing through which they can express themselves more clearly. So
drawing is of utmost importance in any child’s life.
We can introduce computer based drawing to the kids through TUX PAINT software
which is Free and Open Source Software and can be downloaded from the URL:
http://tuxpaint.org/download/
In this chapter we shall discuss about basics of Tux paint software like:
How to start and close it.
How to create new drawing files in it.
How to work with shapes tool.
Teachers’ Notes
Drawing is considered as one of the best tools and activities through which on one hand
children can express themselves and on the other hand we can introduce them to a
variety of things and concepts with lots of fun and enjoyment, without actually making
them realize that we are teaching them something. Keeping this fact in mind, it is
recommended that the teacher should encourage the students to take up this tool with
all enthusiasm so that they can built their creativity, visualization skills and they should
be able to express themselves. As students using this unit may be very young, so more
emphasis should be given on indirect learning with play and learn environment.

III. CONTENT
Tux Paint is a drawing programme especially designed for the young children. It
is freely available on the internet. It’s fun to work in Tux Paint as it is very easy
to use and in fact because of its simplicity in usage, it is hugely popular.
To start with Tux Paint, double click on the Tux Paint icon ( ) at the Desktop,
we shall get ‘Title/Credit Screen’ as shown below:
After few seconds we shall get the main screen, as shown below:
You will notice that in the above given screen shot, the main Tux Paint window is divided into the following sections:

Tool Box:
It is present at the left hand side of the main window. It contains various drawing tools
like Lines, Paint, Magic, Stamp, New, Shapes and Quit etc. which will help us while
drawing.
Selector Box:
Select any tool from the toolbox.
We shall get various options related to the selected tool in the selector box at the right
side of the main window.
For e.g. if we choose Shapes tool by clicking on that, we shall get various shapes options
in the ‘Selector Box’ as shown below:
Help Box:
It is present at the bottom of the main window. It will provide us the help and tips
related to any selected tool.
Color Palette:
It is present near the bottom of the main window, just above the help box. We can
choose the desired color from this color palette.

Drawing Canvas:
It is the central part of the main window, where we draw.
New Tool ( ):
We make new drawing with the help of ‘New’ tool.
The main steps to create a new drawing are as follows:
Step 1:
Click on the ‘New’ tool.
A dialog box will appear containing various background color options.
If we click on the scrolling down button, various ‘Starter images’ options will also be
available as shown below:

Select any desired background color or ‘Starter image’, from the above dialog box.
Step 3:
Click on the open button.
A new drawing file will be created with the selected background color or ‘Starter
image’ as shown below:
New drawing file has been created and we can use any other tool to draw anything.

Shapes Tool ( ):
With the help of ‘Shapes tool’, we draw various filled and unfilled shapes like circle,
oval, square etc.
The main steps to use shapes tool are as follows:
Step 1:
Select the ‘Shape tool’ from the tool box.
Step 2:
Select the desired shape from the Selector box.
Step 3:
Choose the desired color from the color palette.

Bring the mouse pointer at the desired place on the drawing canvas.
Step 5:
Press the left button of the mouse, hold it and drag it till we get the required size.
Selected shape will be drawn on the drawing canvas, as shown below:

By little practice, you can make various interesting patterns and objects. Few samples

Quit Tool ( ):
To close Tux Paint window, we shall click on the ‘Quit’ tool present in the tool box.
OR
Click on the cross button ( ), present at the top right side of the main window.
OR
Press the Esc key present at the top left side of the keyboard.
A confirmation dialog box will appear as shown below to ask whether we really want
to quit or we want to go back to the drawing canvas.
If we choose the second option i.e.
Then Quit dialog box will disappear.
If we choose the first option i.e

It means really we want to quit. Then we will get another dialog box, asking us whether
we want to save it or not and will do as per our choice and finally Tux window will be
closed.

Color palette
A box containing various colors, present near the bottom of the main window, just
above the help box. We can choose the desired color from this color palette.
Drawing canvas
Central part of the main window, where we draw.
Help Box
A box present at the bottom of the main window which will provide us the help and
tips related to any selected tool.
New tool
It is used to make new drawings.
Quit tool
It is used to close Tux Paint.
Selector Box
A box present at the right hand side of the main window containing various options
related to any selected tool.

It is used to draw various filled and unfilled shapes like circle, oval, square etc.
