THINKING OF REPLACEMENT
WINDOWS? THINK AGAIN
(NewsUSA) - Being aware of your homes carbonfootprint takes targeted effort, but it can also save youmoney. Incorporating eco-friendly additions into yourhome can massively reduce energy bills and save onrepairs.
According to CellularWindowShades.com, up to 24percent of a fuel bill can escape out of leaky windows. But replacing windows can cost anywhere from $400to $800 per window. Depending on the size of yourhouse and the state of your windows, total cost could beanywhere from $3,000 to $10,000.
One affordable yet environmentally efficient optionis insulating window shades. Theres some hesitationaround insulating shades, but here are a few questionsand explanations straight from the experts mouth.
Q: Our windows are cold. Do we need to replace them,or can we use insulating shades?
A: If your windows are no longer functional, and yourenergy bills are off the charts, go with replacementwindows. However, if they are simply old and cold, homeowners might want to consider high-qualityinsulating shades with side tracks that provide a four-sided seal. Shades like these will solve your heat-lossproblems immediately.
Q: How do I know if insulated shades are the rightoption for my home?
A: Quality insulated shades are part of a good energy-conservation plan. After installing energy-efficient CFLbulbs, insulated shades are the next step. Mini-blindscan transfer the cold from your window into the room, increasing your energy costs by 10 percent. Insulatingshades can reduce that by half.
Q: What are the environmental benefits of usinginsulated shades?
A: Residential heating and cooling eat up more fossilfuels than any other sector. A shocking 50 percentslips through poorly insulated windows. Experts guagethat the equivalent of 450 million barrels of oil could besaved every year if all windows in the U.S. had effectiveinsulating shades.
For more information, go to cellularwindowshades.com. The shades come in a variety of attractive andcomplementary colors.
SCORE A TOUCHDOWN WITH YOUR
FOOTBALL PARTY
(NewsUSA) - Football season is here, and Sundaysare full of game day cheers. Whether you are tailgatingor hosting friends to watch the big game on your HD TV,savory snacks and drinks go hand in hand with the gameday experience.
For your next football party, impress friends and familywith a simple, yet easy, addition to the usual six-packs,chips and dips on-hand, and spring for a refreshing, easy-to-make tequila cocktail to jumpstart the partys energy.
As official sponsors of four NFL teams, including theNew York Jets and Dallas Cowboys, Familia CamarenaTequila is a natural tequila of choice for football partiesand tailgates this season. Made from 100 percentagave, the core of any good tequila, Camarena Tequilassmooth and soft agave flavor mixes great in a variety ofcocktails.

CAMARENA PALOMA
1 oz Familia Camarena Reposado Tequila
2 oz grapefruit juiceSplash of club soda
Serve tall, over ice, and top with a splash of club soda.Garnish the beverage with a lime wedge, and enjoy.

TOP THEME PARTY TIPS FOR 2012
(NewsUSA) - Lets face it. Theme parties are a blast. They can turn any combination of coworkers, family
and friends into an enthusiastic crowd admiring creativedecorations and inventive outfits. The best part? Partythemes can be as far-fetched, classy or outrageous asyou like.
Event planning experts suggest going beyond holidaysand committing to themes with some integrity. After all, these party themes must be worthy of belonging to theapocalyptic 2012.
All celebrations can gain an unforgettable flairor stylish elegance by adhering to a theme for keyelements -- specifically cocktails, music and decor. Frombirthday parties and anniversaries to baby showers andengagement parties, themes can be specific or broad, but they can also be pricey.
Since we dont all have access to the deep pocketsnecessary to afford celebrity planners like Mindy Weissor David Tutera, here are some creative tips to helpselect the ideal 2012 party theme.
* Go green. If your veins bleed green instead of red, plan an eco-friendly party. Decorate with luxuriant houseplants and natural colors. Spend money on compostablepaper materials, and save by making it a pot-luck event.Challenge your guests by urging them to only bring thingsthey made themselves, whether its a dish, beverage orgift.
* Tap into doomsday fears. Optimize on the end-of-the-world hype and throw a wicked bash with a Goth
theme. Keep an upbeat mood with punk rock favoritesfrom the Night of the Demons soundtrack. The horrorfilm from Seven Arts combined tunes from Zombie Girland Creature Feature for a scarily popular soundtrack
available for download on iTunes.
* Recreate your current TV obsession. If youre gearingup for the season five premiere of Mad Men, turn yourparty into a sophisticated 1960s event complete withOld Fashions, Tom Collins and classic hits from artistslike Ray Charles. Other shows like Glee, Grimm orDexter would provide lots of entertaining costume ideasfor guests.
* Commemorate a favorite decade. Whether itsthe 70s, 80s or 90s that has your friends reminiscing, combine all your beloved elements of the decade for amemorable celebration. From music to food to clothing, your party can mimic the times. For cheap decor, seewhat dusty gems are lying in your attic.
SHINING NEW LIGHT ON BULB
LEGISLATION
(NewsUSA) - Confused about changing light bulbtechnology and new regulations affecting the types ofbulbs stores sell? The American Lighting Association(ALA) offers information to help simplify the process ofselecting efficient, economical and effective light bulbs.
Are certain types of light bulbs being banned?
The word ban is incorrect. While it is true that the 100-watt incandescent bulb will no longer be manufacturedafter January 2012, it is not a ban as much as it is areplacement. Products in every industry go through
a similar process where something that is no longerefficient is replaced in the marketplace by a new model.
The legislation is meant to improve the efficiency oflighting, says Brian Brandes of light bulb manufacturerSATCO Products. There is nothing in the law thatstipulates that CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) are themandatory replacement. The government is not tellingconsumers which type of bulb to buy.
The new FTC Lighting Facts labels, which go intoeffect in January, will help educate consumers as towhich lamp types are more efficient by showing the costto operate per year based on a national average of 0.11per kilowatt hour.
What am I supposed to replace my 100-wattincandescent bulbs with after January?
There are several options:
* One option is the 72-watt halogen-incandescent thatis available now. It produces slightly less light than a 100-watt incandescent, but 72 watts is the standard that hasbeen set by federal legislation for replacing the 100-wattmodels. It is also important to select a bulb with a warmcolor temperature, such as 2,700K and 3,000K.
* Another good choice, and the least-expensive option, would be a halogen or xenon hybrid that will just meetthe efficiency requirements and minimum life ratings. These bulbs will look, light and dim just like the 100-watt
versions they replace.
* A halogen IR (infrared-coated) bulb will provide higherefficiency and three times longer life than a halogen-xenon bulb, but at approximately twice the price.
* A 26-watt, medium-base CFL also offers the sameamount of light as a 100-watt incandescent and usesone-quarter of the electricity. It will also last 10 timeslonger.
Still confused about the light bulb legislationand how to select the right bulb? Find a local ALA-member lighting showroom for expert advice at www.americanlightingassoc.com.

CHILDREN IN DEVELOPING
NATIONS ASPIRE TO BE TEACHERS,
DOCTORS
(NewsUSA) - Ask an average
group of 10- to 12-year-olds in theUnited States what they want to bewhen they grow up, and more thanone in four will say famous athleteor singer/actor. Pose the samequestion to their counterparts in thedeveloping world and professionsrequiring a college education, liketeaching and medicine, top the list.
This finding is part of the secondannual Small Voices, Big Dreamssurvey, which polled close to5,000 children ages 10 to 12 in 44countries throughout Africa, Asia andthe Americas -- from Afghanistan toZambia.
Children who grow up in povertyrecognize more than anyonethe power that education has tobreak the cycle, said Anne LynamGoddard, president and CEO ofChildFund International, the U.S.member of ChildFund Alliance, which commissioned the survey.Children in the poorest countries areplacing their hopes and dreams ontheir ability to learn, and they want touse their education to improve theircommunities.
Compiled by Ipsos Observer, the survey found that when askedhow they would improve the lives
of children in their country, almosthalf of the children in developingnations said they would improvetheir nations schools. This responsewas four times higher than providemore food, which placed secondat 11 percent, followed by improvehealth care at 9 percent.
Reflecting the dangers of the worldaround them, 83 percent of childrenin developing nations said they feltsafest at home or with their parentsor family. Childrens biggest health-related concern is getting sick orcontracting a disease, which wascited by 23 percent of respondentsin developing countries.
Despite finding a stark contrast inprofessional aspirations, the surveyuncovered an inherent similarityamong the worlds children. Given
the choice to do anything they wantedfor a day, 34 percent of children inthe developing world would chooseto play, and 35 percent of childrenin developed nations would do thesame.
At the end of day, children arechildren no matter where they live,Goddard said. This survey gives usa powerful glimpse into the opinionsof children around the world andwill help shape our priorities andprograms while giving a voice tothose most often overlooked.
ARE TEENS PREPARED FOR THE
FUTURE?
(NewsUSA) - Among the latesttech gadgets, cell phones and
social media sites, todays teen ismore connected than ever. Althoughteens are surrounded by a flurry ofelectronics and digital media, are theygaining the skills needed to succeedin a technology-driven world?
According to the Department ofCommerce, students educated inscience, technology, engineeringand math at any level make 26percent more money overall thancounterparts who have studied inother fields.
Several non-profits andcorporations have rallied together tohighlight the importance of teaching
young people critical digital literacyskills.
The access to technology kidsget outside of school is often animportant complement to the learningthat happens in the classrooms, said Dan Rauzi, senior director oftechnology programs at Boys & GirlsClubs of America.
Boys & Girls Clubs has a longhistory of providing educational anddevelopmental programs for youthin communities nationwide. Througha national partnership with Microsoftand Comcast, its Club Tech program
provides free software and accessto technology lessons to youth of allages. In 2010 alone, the programreached over 850,000 kids wholearned how to design posters, collaborate on film projects andmake their own music.
Daniel Flores, 16, has participatedin Club Tech for two years at Boys &Girls Club of Greater Holland, Mich.He believes the skills he is acquiringin graphic design will help him getinto an art college and pursue acareer one day. In fact, hes startedhis own small business offering Weband graphic design services.
I wanted to create a business thathelps other companies market andpromote their ideas by developingwebsites, logos and print making,Flores said.
According to a recent study, teenslike Flores who participate in after-school technology programs exhibita more positive outlook on theirfuture. Many also become morepositive about finishing high schooland attending college.
Club Tech is more than justproviding computers. We give kidsand teens an opportunity to expressthemselves artistically and engagewith technology in a way that buildsconfidence and real-world skills, added Rauzi.
