The War of 1812
Causes of the War
• 1. British needed sailors to serve in the Navy while fighting France. American sailors are taken off of ships and forced to fight for the British. -“impressment”
• 2. Americans were moving west and the British still controlled forts in the area and gave Native Americans guns to fight for their land.-”Westward Expansion”
• 3. The British attempted to ban the U.S. from trading with France during their war with Napoleon.- “trade restrictions”

Results of the War
• 1. Trade restrictions are lifted- people can go back to making money off of trade with England
• 2. Native American resistance to Westward Expansion in Indiana and Ohio (and the territory just west of the old Proclamation Line of 1763) is crushed
• 3. Impressment of sailors ends, America proves it is capable of defending itself against England and Canada proves it is capable of defending itself against America
• 4. America is on its way to being recognized as the major power in the Western Hemisphere
