Meet Your New NeighborsBy Cindy Shaw

You may recognize these familiar faces. They are Steve and PAtriciA tourtil-lotte of Marlborough, CT. In 2017, they purchased an RV lot at 32 Montego and spent the 2017-18 season here in Tropic Isles. When they decided they wanted to have more of a permanent place, they purchased 5 Basin in the spring of 2018. Steve and Patricia learned about Tropic Isles from their good friends, Charlyn and Bob Montie. They are still working full-time in Connecticut, so they will be part-time residents here in Tropic Isles. Patricia is an occupational therapist and Steve works as a powerhouse operator maintainer back in Connecticut. They en-joy boating, swimming, and socializing. They have done a lot of traveling in their RV, but are looking forward to getting a boat, doing some fishing, and exploring the waters around Tropic Isles. Please give a warm welcome to Steve and Patricia. I’d like to introduce you to our part-time neighbors, JoHN and MelodY SlAter, at 3106 10th St. W. They are from Salamanca, New York and discov-ered Tropic Isles through their sister-in-law, Sue Weaver. (According to Melody, Salamanca’s claim to fame is that it is the only city in the United States that is located on an Indian reservation.) The Slaters have three children—Benjamin (41), Erin (39), and Phillip (36). They also have five grandchildren—Zachary, Brianna, Kyleigh, Emily, and Sophie. John worked as a New York State Park Supervisor for 10 out of the 40 years he was with the park system. Melody was a third-grade teacher for 31 years. Melody retired to babysit for her grandkids before John retired years later. John is searching out new interests in his new retirement, but he does enjoy traveling and watching NASCAR racing. Melody enjoys scrapbooking, watching the grandkids play sports, and hunting for shark’s teeth. We are happy to welcome John and Melody to our little piece of paradise.

Fish on!!! *Doug Woulf caught his limit of Spanish Mackerel on March 10 to make his famous “Smoked Fish Dip” that everyone loves who has ever tasted it! He worked hard and stayed up late mak-ing the fish dip the night before the Boat Club fishing tourna-ment! He gives most of the fish dip away to TI friends/neighbors! What a guy! Yum!

Tina Woulf

Our grandson, Jared De-Blecourt, caught this fish while staying with us on spring break. He caught it in the canal on Terra Ceia Dr. Thanks to Renee Belanger and Doug Woulf for netting it in for him. It was a Jack Crevalle.  Need-less to say, he was pretty happy!

letter From the editor This is the time of the year when we bid farewell to some of our snowbird neighbors and friends. We wish them a safe and healthy summer until their return. Those of us who “hold down the fort” while they are away, can look forward to quieter roads, less crowded restaurants, and warmer weather with the onset of the rainy season in June-September. With summer almost here, I would like to encourage everyone to send in pictures from your travels or fun activities this summer. You can email your pictures to [email protected]. I would be happy to print them in the Breezes. Happy trails!

laughter is the Best Medicine! One day a man decided to retire... He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and pro-ceeded to have the time of his life, that is, until the ship sank. He soon found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore. In disbelief, he asks, “Where did you come from? How did you get here?” She replies, “I rowed over from the other side of the island where I landed when my cruise ship sank.” “Amazing,” he notes. “You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you.” “Oh, this thing?” explains the woman. “ I made the boat out of some raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm tree branches, and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree.” “But, where did you get the tools?” “Oh, that was no problem,” replied the woman. “On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is ex-posed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into ductile iron and I used that to make tools and used the tools to make the hardware.” The guy is stunned. “Let’s row over to my place,” she says “and I’ll give you a tour.” So, after a short time of rowing, she soon docks the boat at a small wharf. As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls off the boat. Be-fore him is a long stone walk leading to a cabin and tree house. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, “It’s not much, but I call it home. Please sit down. Would you like a drink?” “No! No thank you,” the man blurts out, still dazed. “I can’t take another drop of coconut juice.” “Oh, it’s not coconut juice,” winks the woman. “I have a still. How would you like a Tropical Spritz?” Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they exchange their individual survival stories, the woman announces, “ I’m going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There’s a razor in the bathroom cabinet up-stairs.” Never questioning anything, the man goes upstairs into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet is a razor made from a piece of tortoise

bone. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism. “This woman is amazing,” he muses. “What’s next?” When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but some small flowers on tiny vines, each strategically positioned, she smelled faintly of gardenias. She then beckons for him to sit down next to her. “Tell me,” she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, “We’ve both been out here for many months. You must have been lonely. When was the last time you played around?” She stares into his eyes. He can’t believe what he’s hearing. “You mean...” he swallows excitedly as tears start to form in his eyes, “You’ve built a golf course, too?”

Boat club News April marked the end of the season for the Tropic Isles’ Boat Club. We held one business meeting on April 3 and then a farewell party on April 17th. Congratulations to 50-50 winners, Mary Lou Lebrecque and Ann Stubbs. A correction to the April Breezes article about our Fishing Derby: Tom Tweedy was the trophy winner for the off-shore boats. We will start up again in November with our first meeting on the 6th and our annual Spaghetti Supper on the 20th. On April 3rd, seven kayakers braved a brisk easterly breeze as we paddled to the quiet of the mangroves around Cut’s Edge

Marina and down the Bimini Canal. Great news! The new kayak racks have been assembled!

Kayak-ity-Yak News We did it!  A record group size and we all made it! 25 individuals kayaked to Linger Lodge in 23 kayaks!  Our two intrepid yakkers, Paul Micallef and Terry Davies, did the round-trip without stop-ping for lunch at the lodge!  Special thanks to Dennis Butts, Terry Foley, Karol Harding, Jan (Karol’s sister), and Mike Zagrodney who had their vehicles at Linger Lodge waiting to transport us back to Jigg’s Landing.  The group photo does not include Shelley and Mike Zagrodney and Teresa and David Spiwak who were already on the road. Thank you all for a great paddle!

Kayak Adventures Continue On Thursday, March 28th a group of eleven yakkers carpooled to get to the Frog Creek RV Resort and Campground just north of I-275 as it turns towards the Skyway Bridge. Frog Creek flows through the campground and its launch site and meanders through beautiful old growth forests with Spanish moss, man-

grove tunnels, and turtles sun-ning themselves on partially submerged logs. Rumors are that you might spot an alli-

gator. It was a magical paddle as we were protected from the very strong breezes on Terra Ceia Bay that day.

Be advised, that the kayaks may only stay on the racks over the summer months, if YOU are staying over the summer yourself. The kayaks are a risk in the event of a hurricane and to theft when there are fewer people in the park. So, if you are leaving for the summer, please store your kayak in your shed or home where it can be safely secured.

tropic isles’ Golf league (tiGl) March was an exciting time for our golf league. Af-ter a number of attempts, we finally played our 2-man golf scramble. It was a great time with the winning

team of Rene Belanger and Shelly Saunders leading the way. The next week was even more exciting when Fred Whitely got anoth-er hole-in-one!  Congratulations to Fred! We then wound down the season the following week with a lunch at the golf course following our round of golf.  Although the league has officially ended, a group of us will continue to play on Wednesdays. If you are interested in golfing, just show up at 10:45 on Wednesday at Terra Ceia Golf Course.

Thank you to all my line dancers for the card of appreciation.  It’s been 7 fun years of dancing, but I am stepping down as leader.  Don’t despair as there are several people who have told me they are interested in leading, so I will be seeing you from the back row next season.

Hugs, Karol Frystak

Is this you?

PleASe SloW doWN on 28th Ave. This is a city street and the speed limit is 25 mph. The speed limit throughout the park is 15 mph. Residents on Bimini Dr., Capri Dr, and Aloha Dr. want to remind you to slow down on those streets. Obey the stop signs at the intersections. If you see a delivery truck (Fed Ex, Amazon, UPS) speeding through the park, let the Office know or call the company to let them know. We want all our residents to be safe.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN)

NHN will continue throughout the summer to help with any resident needs.  Our volunteers will aid residents with various jobs including weeding, yard work, power washing, clearing carports, simple maintenance jobs, and compliance issues. Specific reasons for our help include: illness, aging, financial difficulties, or just to lend a helping hand. We have compiled a list of vendors and various agencies that can also offer help and guidance. Check out our bulletin board in the Auditorium where we list them. Call the people listed below or the Office personnel for help.

Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors Seeks Nurses

NHN is asking for residents who are nurses to add their names and contact information to a list. Right now, two NHN members share a nursing background: Jan Krueger and Beverly Butts. We are interested to find out who else has a nursing background. We are not yet sure how this resource might be used, but just knowing where there is some expertise might be helpful to a resident. If you are a current or retired nurse, please email Beverly Butts of 338 Terra Ceia Drive at [email protected] or call her at 607-382-5112.

Bingo News Thank you to our faithful bingo family! You make Tuesday eve-ning fun!  A special “thank you” to our fantastic devoted callers. The last night of Bingo this season will be Tuesday, May 28. We will resume on Tuesday, October 1. Have a wonderful summer!

Monthly co-op Board Meetings If you are a shareholder of Tropic Isles’ Co-op, please join us at our monthly Board meetings to keep abreast of what’s going on in the park and to let your voice be heard. The meetings are usually held once a month. The agenda for each meeting is posted in the display box on the outside of the Auditorium at least 48 hours before the meeting. Only agenda items may be discussed at the meeting. The Town Hall portion of the meeting is set aside for Shareholder comments and questions on any topic. Shareholder input is important, so please make a point to join in the conversa-tion! Hope to see you there! Watch your Mail chimp reminder for the next scheduled Board meeting on May 16.

calling All Fishermen and Women! Would you like to share a picture of your “catch of the day” from the nearby waters around Tropic Isles? Send it to [email protected] and it can be published in the next issue of the Breezes. Please include a sentence or two about where it was caught, what species it is, and its size. Any fish pictures will do—large or small---fish, that is!

reading Material for vets

We continue to collect reading materials for Vets. Magazines are great (for men or women), as are books. The Library at Tropic Isles will be donating any books that are duplicates and those books that are too old to shelve. There will be a collection box in our library, and someone will take all donated reading items to Bay Pines VA Hospital. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it is always greatly appreciated.

Our Rules and Regulations state:7.5 Shower The State of Florida requires all persons using a pub-lic pool or hot tub/spa to shower immediately before entering the pool and hot tub/spa. (FS 64E- 9.008) No shampoo or soaps are permitted in the pool or hot tub/spa deck area. our shower at the pool is tucked behind the palm tree on the west side of the pool near the boat slips. (it is disguised as a palm tree and after a minute or so gives you a nice warm shower to remove any soaps or oils on your skin which keeps the water in the pool and spa cleaner.)

Hurricane Preparedness—Are Your Home and Yard ready?

If you are leaving the park for the summer, it is that time of the year to prepare your home and yard for hurricane season. Please use the checklist provided in this issue of the Breezes to properly prepare your home and yard! If you are staying in the park during hurricane season, it is im-portant to properly prepare your home and make preparations for a possible evacuation. Have you checked your tie-downs in your carport? On older homes, it is important to secure your carport tie downs before leaving for the season or when high winds are predicted. Bring the pole down in your carport and attach it into the driveway bolt. Make sure it’s secure into the ground. Many home owners have done away with the original roof hold down base because it was a tripping hazard. It might be too hard to install the connecting pipe. If you need information on how to install a new system for holding down your carport roof, please contact the Office for directions. Make sure it is done on both ends of your carport.

Southeastern Guide dogs in review for 2019

Although the official totals are not in, Tropic Isles can pat themselves on the back. We donated over $6,000 to this year’s Walkathon. Again, we earned the privilege of naming a dog. That honor went to Rick and Shari Antcliff and the name they chose was “Reilly”. Over the years, our park has donated close to $88,000. Stories in the Spotlight! *Fred Whitely got his second hole-in-one this winter season. This time it was at Terra Ceia’s 8th hole--a 145-yard, par 3. The screams were heard far and wide as Fred’s drive rolled onto the green in a dead line for the pin. The ball crept slowly across the green to disappear in the hole. What a shot! Witnesses to this historic event were: Roger Maulding, Rose Mahacek, and Rene Belanger. It is a very low percentage of regular golfers to ever enjoy the thrill of an “ace”, but Fred did it twice in a couple of months. Fred’s first hole-in-one was at Longboat Key Resort earlier this winter.  Autographs were being requested back at the clubhouse. We will all be watching for Fred at the Masters Tournament coming up soon at Augusta. To quote Fred, “There’s nothing to this game!”  Everyone should be sure to congratulate Fred on his milestone achievement.

Rene Belanger

*As I came home from work the other day, Dave, Pat, and their dog, Bella Clarke were looking skyward. As I got out of my car, I thought perhaps they were looking at the Internation-al Space Station. However,  I found out that as Dave was walking Bella, an osprey was flying back to its nest and dropped a fish right in front of them. Dave crossed the street and continued on his walk.   The osprey tried to pick it up two or three times, but to no avail, as either a golf cart, bicyclist, or automobile came by and the osprey gave up. So, I decided to go down, pick up the fish, and take it into the backyard near the tree the nest is in. Both the male and female were in the tree.  I watched until 8 PM and the fish was still there. Come the next day, the fish was gone, but it is unknown if the osprey got it, raccoons, coyotes, or whatever other wildlife that travels our park may have absconded it. We’ll never know.

Stories in the Spotlight! Amber knows when I do not feel well and will stay by my side! That is a true companion dog!

For an outing, Doug brought me to Village of the Arts for lunch at the Taco Shack!

Our dog, Amber, waits for Doug’s fishing boat to return. (You can see behind her. The boat is missing from the lift). She always does that! Just like the pelicans who wait for his return!

My neighbor, Sharon Duval, has another family member named “Tucker” that sometimes gets lost in the tall grass! Sitting here on my lap, he’s so cute and little! I won’t say how old Tucker is. Let’s just say, he is in the double digits.

were able to get  a very large meat hog. They had a perfect day of hunting from the stand and stalking on foot. It was a great day and they hope to go back next year.

it’s Spring cleaning tme!Challenge: How to De-Clutter Your Home in 30 Days

I’m too busy, I don’t have time, it’s not Spring yet…. How many reasons have you come up with to avoid cleaning the clutter over the years? It is amazing what we can get used to living in. You store this, you hide that, you forget about this, you ignore that. Clutter can seriously affect how you live. Truth is… there’s a mental cost to clutter. As psychologist Sher-rie Bourg Carter puts it: “Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling, anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed. Yet, rarely is clutter recognized as a significant source of stress in our lives.” On the con-trary, research shows that – in addition to stress – clutter can spur on anxiety and depression. So, take the De-Clutter Challenge be-low. One a day…one a week… It doesn’t matter. Just get started.

(clip and save) Is this de-clutter challenge something you’ve been putting off for days, weeks, months, or maybe even years? If so, there is no better time than now to start. Say goodbye to stress and anxiety and make a calm, clean home your new reality. Below there is some guidance on how to tackle each daily de-clutter challenge. Do a little at a time. There are 30---one for each day of the month. Or if you’re not that ambitious, try one a week. Either way, just get started. Make it your Spring cleaning resolution to de-clutter.1) empty out one Junk drawer It doesn’t matter how many you have… don’t even think about that! It will only overwhelm you. Choose one and tackle only that one. Whether it’s old flyers or bills, dried out elastic bands, golf balls, or garbage wrappers … get rid of it! A good rule of thumb is that if you haven’t used it in the last three months, you probably don’t need it.2) Purge Your closet of the things You No longer Wear Time to take a trip to your local thrift shop! If you have to think twice about a piece of clothing, throw it in that plastic bag. This is the only time where, if you don’t use it, you want to lose it.3) Go through Your Movie collection Keep your favorites – no, they’re not all your favorites – and ditch the rest. Whether you donate your old VHS tapes or DVDs, or leave them for the local landfill, be honest with yourself, you probably forgot they existed until now. Plus, does anyone really need those things when you have Netflix and other streaming programs?4) clean out Your television Stand You may even have some of those old VHS tapes or DVDs in there, not to mention cables you don’t use anymore. Some people spend a lot of time in front of a television, so why not make it as clutter-free as possible? No use sitting down to relax with a movie while things like loose cables are poking out and bugging you.5) Go through Your Mail Pile The flyers and newspapers start to stack up quickly. If you or someone you know has a fireplace indoors or outdoors, put it in a bag and use it that way. If not, just recycle all that excess stress-in-ducing paper. As for more important mail items such as bills, file them safely or pay them and throw them away. If you’re up for it, you can also opt for electronic billing at many places which will help keep your mailbox clear.6) clean off Your Kitchen table One day it’s clean and the next day, it’s as if it turned into an open concept storage unit. Move the laptops, dirty dishes, homework, and loose sheets of paper. Being able to eat at a clean table during meals will also help foster less stressful quality time together.

7) Purge two Kitchen cabinets Let’s say the average family has four members. So why is it that people have sets upon sets of cups, dishware, and cutlery? Unless you’re hosting weekly friend or family functions, you can do away with at least some of those things. Donate a set of plates and re-gift those mugs you’ve never used. Less dishes means less washing, too! 8) discard old Books Yardsaleanyone?Oldbookscanbetastefullyusedfordécor, but there is a very distinct line between a beautifully placed coffee table book and an open book you have no intention to return to. Of course, you’d keep your favorites, but ask around to see if anyone would be interested in reading any! If not, donate them or place them in a donation box in our library. You’d be surprised at how many people will be able to enjoy them!9) clean out Your Wallet This may be the easiest one to do because your wallet is likely within reach right now. So, empty it completely. Get rid of the empty gift cards, faded receipts, creased business cards, and whatever else you’ve managed to slip in there!10) clean out Your Purse Empty packs of gum, old lip balm, crinkled wrappers, soiled tissues? It’s definitely time for a purse purge. Empty everything out of your purse and once you’ve gotten rid of all the garbage or old items, only put back in the essentials: wallet, small makeup/hygiene bag, a pen or pencil, a planner, a little pack of tissues. It really depends on the person. The point is, you don’t want to carry around more than you have to.11) Purge Your Makeup drawer/Bag Using the logic from number 10, do the same thing with your makeup drawer and bag. Keep your lipsticks in one place, eyeliners in another, and only keep the ones you use most often in your makeup bag.12) clean out empty/Almost empty containers in the Shower It’s like the milk jug syndrome. No one ever wants to be the one to finish the shampoo, so it sits there sometimes for months on end just taking up space. The good thing about this is that you don’t need to open each and every bottle. Just pick it up and give it a quick shake. You’ll be able to tell whether it’s empty or close to it.13) Purge Your Bathroom cabinets The amount of loose hair and other unwanted things you’ll find in your bathroom cabinets will blow your mind. Clean all that out along with hygiene products, packaging, empty toothpaste tubes, old mouthwash, and anything else you find!14) Go through Your Family’s Shoes If the shoes are old and worn out, throw them away. If they’re relatively new, but don’t fit, donate them to a thrift shop or friend. Simple as that!15) Purge 2 More Kitchen cabinets See number 7.16) organize Your linen closet It’s always nice to have extra linens in case people stay over, but maybe it’s time to revisit your linen closet. Take an inventory of everything you’re storing in there and get rid of the old, holey, tattered sheets and blankets. Donate them.17) Purge Your Medicine cabinet Old or expired medication is not something you want in your house. Check the expiration dates and if they have expired, take them to your local prescription drug disposal site. If you’re trying to live life more holistically, you might want to try swapping those medications for natural supplements!

Page 28 - Tropic Isles - May 2019

18) Go through Your Freezer and dump old items You may have just hit the jackpot! Check the expiration dates. If the food in your freezer is too old, throw it out. But if the food is good, cancel your shopping trip, and eat whatever you’ve already got! Dinner is served.19) clear off Your Kitchen counters Crusty plates, dirty glasses, food from the past week still sitting in serving bowls? It’s time to clean off those counters! Set aside a block of time – however long you think you’ll need – and just do it. There’s nothing like walking into a kitchen knowing you don’t have a mountain of dishes staring you in the face.20) empty Another Junk drawer See number 1.21) Go through Your Fridge and dump old items See number 18. Follow the same idea for the cleanest and freshest fridge you’ve ever had.22) Purge 2 More Kitchen cabinets See number 7.23) Get rid of unused Accessories (Jewelry, Hats, etc.) No one knows your taste in fashion and accessories better than you do. So, if you try something on and you know it doesn’t suit you anymore or you don’t like it, put it in the donation bag or see if your kids or grandkids are interested. Don’t get stuck in the trap of telling yourself maybe you’ll wear it again one day because you probably told yourself that last time.24) clean out Your car Get out that vacuum and get to work. First, get rid of the empty bottles, old tissues, crumped receipts, and whatever else you find.

Then bang out the matts, clean out the compartments, and scrub down the interior. 25) discard Kids unused toys Depending on how old your kids or grandkids are, this will either be a hard day or an easy one. If the toys are in a box and you know they haven’t been used in forever, those are fair game to put up for donation or sale. If they’re lying around the house, ask the kids if they still want their toys. If not, add them to the donation bin. If they do, get them to help clean up with you.26) organize toys that Are left Designate a play area or toy bin where all the toys will go from now on. If you already had something like this, enforce it again at the peril of losing their playtime privilege. 27) Go through Board Games and electronic Games (donate What’s unused) The same goes for board games and game consoles. Keep them neat and tidy and in one place – especially when so many little moving pieces and wires are involved. If no one uses them, we’re sure someone somewhere will find immense joy in a board game or console you don’t use anymore.28) organize and discard cleaning Supplies If you want to take a leap, get rid of all your toxic cleaners and replace with them with natural alternatives. This will create a safer and cleaner home. 29) Purge 2 More Kitchen cabinets See number 7.30) clean! Get Your Newly organized Home All Sparkly Now that everything is organized again, cleaning should be a breeze!
