DCNS is a major player on theEuropean and world markets innaval defence systems. With its

long history, the DCNS group providesthe French Navy and other client forceswith direct access to proven capacity forinnovation and vast experience in navaland naval air arm systems, through-lifesupport and related services. The com-pany delivers products meeting cus-tomer expectations, including high-levelintegration, cost control and interoper-ability with joint and allied systems.DCNS is one of the few naval defenceplayers to propose an integrated ap-proach to warships and services. As aprime contractor, shipbuilder and sys-tems integrator, DCNS offers resourcesand expertise spanning the entire navaldefence value chain and product lifecy-cles, from design concept to decommis-sioning. In a major de-fence deal signed in2005, India decidedto acquire six highlyadvanced Scorpenesubmarines worth$3 billion. ThenFrench PresidentJacques Chirac dis-closed India's deci-sion to buy the Scor-pene submarineswhile welcoming Prime Minister Man-mohan Singh at the Elysee Palace. Scor-pene, one of the world's most advancedwill be manufactured under technologytransfer by the Mazgoan Docks inMumbai and delivered between 2010

and 2015. As part of the deal, the sub-marines will be armed with the MBDASM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles.

In other news DCNS andRosoboronexport, have signed a pur-chase general contract. The purpose isto develop technical co-operation forR&D between the Krylov ShipbuildingResearch Institute and DCNS group.

The general contractwill develop the busi-ness relationship inthe field of R&Dand naval engineer-ing betweenRosoboron -exportand DCNS.

French's significantpresence atDEFEXPODCNS will be partic-ipating as a French

Pavilion member at the Defexpo 2008exhibition which takes place at the Pra-gati Maidan in New Delhi from 16-19February 2008.

The French defence industry is keento tap opportunities in India's defence

markets, by forming strategic alliances.The French defence industry will be

out in full force at Defexpo 2008, India'spremier land and marine technology ex-hibition. The show has traditionally hada strong French presence and this yearwill be no exception.. The French NavalIndustry Group, GICAN, organises theFrench pavilion dedicated to the pro-motion of the French know-how. With38 companies and about 800 sqmstands, the French Pavilion representsthe widest range of activities displayedin a international exhibition in the navaland land fields and security. The Frenchexpertise in Defence and Security cov-ers the whole range of competences insystems, equipments, training and tech-nology.

Besides DCNS, some of the otherleading French organizations exhibitingat DEFEXPO include Thales, DCI,MBDA Sagem Defense Security &Saint Gobain Sully. The attraction ofDEFEXPO for the French industry isthe chance to meet new customers, sup-pliers and identify potential partner-ships with Indian firms where the de-fence & security sector in India is

From February 16 to 19, Finmecca-nica is taking part in Defexpo 2008,New Delhi, where it will present its ca-

pabilities in the aeronautics, helicop-ters, security and defence systems sec-tors. Finmeccanica's focus on India isdeep-rooted: over the years, it has de-veloped solid industrial alliances in thedefence and security sectors thanks topartnerships in several successful pro-grammes. Going forward, Finmecca-nica and its companies aim tostrengthen their commercial presencein India, and above all, consolidatetheir industrial partnerships to enablethem to rise to the country's challengesand global ambitions - not only inthese areas but also in other sectors inwhich the Group operates (e.g. space,transport and energy).

India's well-developed system of

higher education and the advancedtechnological standards achieved bylocal industry go hand-in-hand with astrong political will to develop a solid,aerospace and defence sector of itsown. India is experiencing a time ofstrong economic growth and is likelyto see important government pro-grammes in the defence sector in thenext 10-15 years. As a dynamic player,Finmeccanica is already seeing therapid expansion of civil aviation with

the establishment of an autonomousinter-regional market and the creationof new low-cost airlines.

Owing to the extraordinary rise inthe number of flights, the countryneeds to equip itself with appropriateair traffic control and managementsystems and new aircraft to cope withmarket demand. Finmeccanica is re-sponding to the former with the tech-nological capabilities of systems man-ufactured by SELEX SistemiIntegrati, which over the years hassupplied radar equipment to thelargest airports in the country, and hasrecently won the contract to supply 13systems (comprising primary radarATCR33 S, secondary radar SIR Sand 52 CDS 2000 consoles) for the In-dian Air Force's air traffic control.

At the same time, the larger Indianairlines - Jet Airways, Air Deccan, AirAlliance and Kingfisher - have alreadybought dozens of turboprop regionalaircraft manufactured by ATR, a jointventure between Alenia Aeronauticaand EADS. In Bangalore, ATRopened a customer support centre and-in partnership with Air Deccan - atraining centre which will operate forboth Indian and other airlines. The in-creasing presence of ATR in India, aswell as the opportunity to access train-ing centres and a wide technical sup-port network, could also help per-suade the country to choose thetwin-engine ATR42MP for maritimepatrol missions. The ATR42MP isequipped with Galileo Avionica'sATOS mission system, and Seaspraysearch radar developed by SELEXSensors and Airborne Systems, themost advanced system available forthis category of aircraft, also chosen bythe US Coast Guard to update its HC-130 patrol planes. Early this year, SE-LEX Sensors and Airborne Systems

and Galileo Avionica began to oper-ate on the market with the name SE-LEX GALILEO.

In the helicopters business,AgustaWestland has strong interestsin the country in terms of potentialdevelopments in the civil market andalso for the tender under way to sup-ply VVIP helicopters to the ArmedForces. The AW101 is the ideal heli-copter for this programme, in light ofits recent successes on the interna-tional market, and the additional in-terest that it could generate in theNavy and Air Force. In addition,AgustaWestland is continuing itsstrategy of strengthening existing re-lationships with distributors and lo-cal maintenance and technical sup-port centres, and of identifyingpotential partners for joint develop-ment projects in India. Moreover, inresponse to the Indian Navy's re-quirements for a naval helicopter,AgustaWestland is promoting theNH90 helicopter in the NFH versionfor naval applications .

India has a number of particularlyinteresting projects under way: at thetop of the list is the MMRCA(Medium Multi Role Combat Air-craft) programme to supply 126fighter aircraft, with local industryplaying an important role in R&D.Candidates for this programme in-clude the swing-role aircraft Eu-rofighter with the heavy involvementof Finmeccanica companies, whichwith 36% participation in the project,play an important role both in theplanning, design, development andproduction of the aircraft, and in theavionics and on-board electronics.
