Eurofighter Typhoon: ready for anything, ready for India. www.eurofighter.com nothing comes close D CNS is a major player on the European and world markets in naval defence systems. With its long history, the DCNS group provides the French Navy and other client forces with direct access to proven capacity for innovation and vast experience in naval and naval air arm systems, through-life support and related services. The com- pany delivers products meeting cus- tomer expectations, including high-level integration, cost control and interoper- ability with joint and allied systems. DCNS is one of the few naval defence players to propose an integrated ap- proach to warships and services. As a prime contractor, shipbuilder and sys- tems integrator, DCNS offers resources and expertise spanning the entire naval defence value chain and product lifecy- cles, from design concept to decommis- sioning. DCNS offers three main types of solutions that include Integrated war- ships(surface combatants and sub- marines with integrated combat sys- tems), Services(guaranteed-availability through-life support, modernisations, upgrades and repairs and maintenance) and Critical systems and equipment in- cluding underwater weapons. With its vast expertise in system inte- gration and interoperability, DCNS de- livers systems with proven capabilities for navies and naval air arms. The Con- vergence project to join the forces of DCN with those of Thales Naval France, Armaris and their subsidiaries is now fully opera- tional. In a major de- fence deal signed in 2005, India decided to acquire six highly advanced Scorpene submarines worth $3 billion. Then French President Jacques Chirac dis- closed India's deci- sion to buy the Scor- pene submarines while welcoming Prime Minister Man- mohan Singh at the Elysee Palace. Scor- pene, one of the world's most advanced will be manufactured under technology transfer by the Mazgoan Docks in Mumbai and delivered between 2010 and 2015. As part of the deal, the sub- marines will be armed with the MBDA SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. In other news DCNS and Rosoboronexport, have signed a pur- chase general contract. The purpose is to develop technical co-operation for R&D between the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute and DCNS group. The general contract will develop the busi- ness relationship in the field of R&D and naval engineer- ing between Rosoboron -export and DCNS. French's significant presence at DEFEXPO DCNS will be partic- ipating as a French Pavilion member at the Defexpo 2008 exhibition which takes place at the Pra- gati Maidan in New Delhi from 16-19 February 2008. The French defence industry is keen to tap opportunities in India's defence markets, by forming strategic alliances. The French defence industry will be out in full force at Defexpo 2008, India's premier land and marine technology ex- hibition. The show has traditionally had a strong French presence and this year will be no exception.. The French Naval Industry Group, GICAN, organises the French pavilion dedicated to the pro- motion of the French know-how. With 38 companies and about 800 sqm stands, the French Pavilion represents the widest range of activities displayed in a international exhibition in the naval and land fields and security. The French expertise in Defence and Security cov- ers the whole range of competences in systems, equipments, training and tech- nology. Besides DCNS, some of the other leading French organizations exhibiting at DEFEXPO include Thales, DCI, MBDA Sagem Defense Security & Saint Gobain Sully. The attraction of DEFEXPO for the French industry is the chance to meet new customers, sup- pliers and identify potential partner- ships with Indian firms where the de- fence & security sector in India is F inmeccanica is Italy's lead- ing high-tech company, op- erating in the design and manufacture of helicop- ters, aerostructures, satel- lites, space infrastructure, missiles and defense electronics. It also boasts sig- nificant manufacturing assets and skills in the transport, energy and IT sectors. The group employs around 55,000 staff worldwide. As part of its drive to maintain and build on its tech- nological expertise, Finmeccanica spends the equivalent of over 16% of its revenues on R&D. From February 16 to 19, Finmecca- nica is taking part in Defexpo 2008, New Delhi, where it will present its ca- pabilities in the aeronautics, helicop- ters, security and defence systems sec- tors. Finmeccanica's focus on India is deep-rooted: over the years, it has de- veloped solid industrial alliances in the defence and security sectors thanks to partnerships in several successful pro- grammes. Going forward, Finmecca- nica and its companies aim to strengthen their commercial presence in India, and above all, consolidate their industrial partnerships to enable them to rise to the country's challenges and global ambitions - not only in these areas but also in other sectors in which the Group operates (e.g. space, transport and energy). India's well-developed system of higher education and the advanced technological standards achieved by local industry go hand-in-hand with a strong political will to develop a solid, aerospace and defence sector of its own. India is experiencing a time of strong economic growth and is likely to see important government pro- grammes in the defence sector in the next 10-15 years. As a dynamic player, Finmeccanica is already seeing the rapid expansion of civil aviation with the establishment of an autonomous inter-regional market and the creation of new low-cost airlines. Owing to the extraordinary rise in the number of flights, the country needs to equip itself with appropriate air traffic control and management systems and new aircraft to cope with market demand. Finmeccanica is re- sponding to the former with the tech- nological capabilities of systems man- ufactured by SELEX Sistemi Integrati, which over the years has supplied radar equipment to the largest airports in the country, and has recently won the contract to supply 13 systems (comprising primary radar ATCR33 S, secondary radar SIR S and 52 CDS 2000 consoles) for the In- dian Air Force's air traffic control. At the same time, the larger Indian airlines - Jet Airways, Air Deccan, Air Alliance and Kingfisher - have already bought dozens of turboprop regional aircraft manufactured by ATR, a joint venture between Alenia Aeronautica and EADS. In Bangalore, ATR opened a customer support centre and -in partnership with Air Deccan - a training centre which will operate for both Indian and other airlines. The in- creasing presence of ATR in India, as well as the opportunity to access train- ing centres and a wide technical sup- port network, could also help per- suade the country to choose the twin-engine ATR42MP for maritime patrol missions. The ATR42MP is equipped with Galileo Avionica's ATOS mission system, and Seaspray search radar developed by SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems, the most advanced system available for this category of aircraft, also chosen by the US Coast Guard to update its HC- 130 patrol planes. Early this year, SE- LEX Sensors and Airborne Systems and Galileo Avionica began to oper- ate on the market with the name SE- LEX GALILEO. In the helicopters business, AgustaWestland has strong interests in the country in terms of potential developments in the civil market and also for the tender under way to sup- ply VVIP helicopters to the Armed Forces. The AW101 is the ideal heli- copter for this programme, in light of its recent successes on the interna- tional market, and the additional in- terest that it could generate in the Navy and Air Force. In addition, AgustaWestland is continuing its strategy of strengthening existing re- lationships with distributors and lo- cal maintenance and technical sup- port centres, and of identifying potential partners for joint develop- ment projects in India. Moreover, in response to the Indian Navy's re- quirements for a naval helicopter, AgustaWestland is promoting the NH90 helicopter in the NFH version for naval applications . India has a number of particularly interesting projects under way: at the top of the list is the MMRCA (Medium Multi Role Combat Air- craft) programme to supply 126 fighter aircraft, with local industry playing an important role in R&D. Candidates for this programme in- clude the swing-role aircraft Eu- rofighter with the heavy involvement of Finmeccanica companies, which with 36% participation in the project, play an important role both in the planning, design, development and production of the aircraft, and in the avionics and on-board electronics. Finmeccanica's large portfolio of systems and solutions are ideal to meet the needs of India's fast-growing aerospace and defence sector THE stealth WARRIOR 9 THE Right EXPERIENCE DCNS delievers systems with proven capabilities for navies PROJECT COORDINATOR: Rajiv Girhotra DESIGN: Vanita
