“It’s not that easy being green ….” Those of us who grew up with the Muppets remember this song of Kermit the frog. Several years ago I was reminded of this little diddy when the rector of my home parish in Kansas City preached a sermon with this title. While I don’t remember the context of her sermon I have always remembered the link to Kermit and this song, and I think it’s so appropriate as we walk through the Season after Pentacost – the season of “being green.” In the Season after Pentecost (not of Pentecost) the liturgical color is green. It’s the longest season of the liturgical year and includes the weeks between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, and the weeks after Pentecost. It includes weeks of the liturgical year that do not fall in the Seasons of Advent, Epiphany, Lent or Easter – all seasons that speak to the particular time of preparation for Jesus’ birth, His nativity, preparation for His suffering and death, and then the hope of Christ’s glorious resurrection. Ordinary Time is ordered – the weeks are numbered and we are called to be anything but ordinary (though the etymology of the word comes from our word for ordinary). It is during this time of the year when we are called “order our lives,” to follow the example of Christ’s life, death and resurrection. And that’s not easy.

That’s why I think of this song. It’s so much more fun to think about the reds of Pentecost and ordinations, the whites of Easter and Christmas, and the blues of Advent, even the purples of Lent. We know our focus. We understand more clearly how our intentions and disciplines should be focused. It’s not that easy being green – the season of Ordinary Time is lengthy, especially following Trinity Sunday. The weeks number into the twenties right up until the First Sunday of Advent when we begin a new liturgical year.

Ordinary Time isn’t flashy. Things do seem to blend together as we move from week to week with our lives. Because it falls during the spring, summer and fall it’s easy to become distracted from our spiritual practices of daily prayer, weekly worship and caring for each other and God’s creation. Practicing our faith isn’t usually flashy and doesn’t necessarily hold the excitement or anticipation of other seasons of the liturgical year. Yet it is in the season of “being green” that we are invited to become more like Jesus.

Kermit’s song reminds us of the life-giving qualities of walking with Jesus and our spiritual disciplines. “It can be cool …” to be green – to live in the practice of our faith, to be “friendly-like.” We can live in big moments of faith experience – like seeing the joy on a child’s face when they hear music, or getting an “aha” from the sermon, or the moment you are in God’s presence during prayer. Even simple faith experiences can seem “big like an ocean, or important like a mountain,” because in our relationship with God, they are important.

When we are in the long season of Ordinary Time, invited to order our lives according to the example that Christ set for us, there are challenges. Yet it can also be a beautiful time filled with the presence of the Holy One, time not distracted by anything so that we can walk closely with the One Who loves us most. So being green is “fine, and it’s beautiful.” Studying, praying, worshiping and learning to live in the “Season of Green” can be a good thing, as it strengthens our disciplines, our moral compasses and our lives in Christ and in community. Our call, if accepted, is to grow more into the likeness of Christ crucified and resurrected during this “Ordinary Time.” We are called to be fully Christian. Kermit sums it up best … “and I think it’s what I want to be.” --Diane+ A WORD FROM THE RECTOR Greetings everyone! Although I am on sabbatical and currently in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I am aware of the recent deaths that have occurred so recently. Each one of these parishioners were near and dear to my heart. Ken Cratty was a "behind the scenes" kind of person who never wanted to draw attention to himself. Instead, he was selfless in his love and devotion to St. Andrew's. He meant a lot to me and I will miss him dearly. Ann Smythe was one of the most faithful Christians I have known. Married to a priest (as she was) is hard enough, but Ann was always cheerful and always attended church until she no longer could do so. I loved Ann and will miss her too. Rich Richardson will always be remembered by me for the love and care he gave me when he learned I loved apple pies. He made one for me from scratch before his memory was taken from him. Betty was always faithful to help care for him and be by his side. His loss is also palpable. A special thanks from me to The Rev. Diane Pike who I know is working tirelessly in my stead. Please give her your thanks when you see her. She deserves it! And please welcome Transitional Deacon Tony Anderson in your midst. I will be present for his ordination to the priesthood at St. Andrew's on August 10th at 7:00 PM. - Fr. John

FROM THE REV. DIANE PIKE I want to thank this entire community of faith for your support, cards, gifts and prayers over the past two months while Fr. John has been on sabbatical. No one but God could foresee the immense loss this congregation would experience with the deaths of four of our beloved members. I have witnessed gifts of hospitality, pastoral care, and immense generosity in time and talent as we, as a community, encircled families in grief with love and compassion.

Thank you for stepping up when asked and for volunteering when you saw a need. This is truly a remarkable place where God is present and the Holy Spirit moves as She will. Diane+

MINISTRY NEWS COFFEE AND CONVERSATION SUMMER HIATUS Wednesday morning "Coffee and Chat" at the Village Grinder is suspended until after Labor Day. This month’s study will focus on the Syrophoenician Woman in Matthew 15:21-28. Bring a Bible, if you wish, and something with which to take notes if you like to record your learning. ANTHEM COMMISSION At St. Andrew’s, we are now raising funds to commission an anthem to honor the memory of Ingrid Van Blerk for the 10:30 am Adult Choir to sing. RETREAT OPPORTUNITY Jesus proclaims the good news that "the kingdom of God has come near you," and he sends his disciples out to do the same. But what is God's kingdom really like, here and now? At this event, we will experience and reflect on one aspect of life in the kingdom: the practice of hospitality. At a time when our communities are marked by deep divisions that alienate us from each other, we'll consider how God might be working to transform our lives and our communities through the act of radical welcome and listening across difference. Bishop Barker and the Diocese of Nebraska invite you to join us at Trinity Cathedral from 10:00 am-2:00 pm, Saturday, Aug 5 to practice living more deeply into our calling to be followers of Jesus and citizens of his kingdom.

Monday, August 21st The 2017 solar eclipse will pass over us, just about lunch time! So, we’re planning a “happening” barbecue with burgers, hot dogs, chips and soft drinks. Bring a chair or blanket, if you wish. Weather

permitting – we will begin to gather about 11:30 am. The eclipse should be finished in by 1:30 pm. Eclipse viewing glasses will be provided! Come and hang out under our beautiful trees, commune with nature and be in fellowship with friends! Regular Fun Club Gatherings will be held the 2nd Tuesday of each month (except Advent and Lent) at local bistros in the area. The First Gathering is September 12, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at a place TBA. Be ready for a good time with St. Andrew's friends!! PRAYER SHAWL REMINDER The prayer shawl group continues to knit & crochet prayer shawls. They are available for anyone to take for someone who needs the comfort a shawl provides. These are intended for everyone, not just St. Andrew’s members. The shawls are located in the cupboard by the north exit in Haviland Hall (the Blue Room). In this same area there are cards with small crosses that can be attached to the shawl. You can either just help yourself or ask the office staff for assistance. These shawls have been made with loving prayers & blessed by the clergy.

The Prayer Shawl group also welcomes new members. Help is even available to learn how to knit or crochet. Donations for supplies are also greatly appreciated. The Prayer Shawl group meets for an hour at 7:00PM the first Thursday of every month. For additional information please contact the office & your inquiry will be forwarded to a member of the group.

ST MONICA’S GUILD LUNCHEONS BEGIN AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER A big thank you from the Ladies of St. Monica's Guild! Thanks to your generosity, we were able to deliver 25 completed Welcome Bags to the St. Monica's Home in Lincoln in June! We appreciate your continued support of this ministry, and are currently collecting items for our next delivery in January. We are happy to accept donations of new bath size towels and washcloths, full size (Suave brand or store brand is fine) shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors and feminine products. We also try to include a journal of some sort. The composition books in the back to school sections will be going on clearance soon, and these work very well for journals. Items can be placed in the bin marked for St. Monica's Welcome Bags. Mark your calendars - St. Monica's will be starting up with regular luncheons and meetings with our Fall Kick-off on Wednesday, September 20th. All women of St. Andrew's are welcome to attend, and there will be more information coming as the date gets closer.

REFUGEE FAMILY OUTREACH One of the things that his impressed me from the moment I first started learning about St. Andrew’s is

the number of outreach ministries that the parish is involved in and the commitment of time, talent and treasure to those ministries. The people of this parish care about the local and global community and take seriously Jesus’ command to care for “the least of these” in our midst. Even with the number of ministries that St. Andrew’s currently supports, many in the parish are interested in ways that we can do more – especially in finding ways to give more of our time and talents – to be truly present to those in the community that need the gifts we have to share. With that in mind, on Tuesday, July 18th Stu Dornan invited Diane+, Beth Summers, Shelia Karpf, and I, Rev. Tony, to meet for breakfast at Wheatfield’s with Lacey Studnicka from Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska. Lacey works with LFS’s refugee resettlement program. The program assists refugee families who are fleeing their home countries or who have been displaced and living in refugee camps due to wars or oppressive regimes in their home countries.

Refugees come from all parts of the world to settle in Nebraska, which has the highest population of refugees per-capita in the nation. One of Lacey’s jobs is finding individuals or organizations to co-sponsor refugee families when they first arrive in Omaha. There are three levels of co-sponsorship available to organizations that wish to help. Level one consists of simply collecting all the items necessary to furnish an apartment for the incoming family. (LFS provides a list of all the items needed, as well as a list of culturally-appropriate groceries in order to stock the kitchen.) Level two includes all that is done for level one, but a group from the Church or other sponsoring organization also meets the family at the airport when they arrive and shares their first meal with them. Level three provides the co-sponsors with the greatest opportunity for face-to-face ministry and includes everything that is done in levels one and two, but also includes a commitment by the parish to visit the family at least once a week for three to six months to see how they are adjusting to life in their new country and help with any concerns they might be having.

All of us at the meeting agreed that level three co-sponsorship sounded like a very exciting ministry opportunity for St. Andrew’s. Because there was a moratorium placed on refugees coming into the country earlier in the year, there are currently no families scheduled to arrive in Omaha right now, but it is likely that we will have more arriving as early as late summer or early fall. The next step for St. Andrew’s will be for us to gauge how much interest there is in the congregation in helping with co-sponsoring a family. If you have an interest in participating in this outreach project or have any questions, feel free to talk to Diane+, myself or reach-out to Sheila Karpf, Beth Summers or Stu Dornan. MEET BISHOP’S SOCIETY CURATE, THE REV TONY ANDERSON Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, My name is Tony Anderson, and beginning on July 15th I began an 18- month appointment with St. Andrew’s as a Bishop’s Society Curate. My family and I are thrilled to be moving back to the Omaha area and to be joining you in all the exciting ways that you are ministering to the community. There are a few folks in the parish that we know already, and we are looking forward to getting to know many more of you in the months to come. Allow me to get things started by letting you all know a little bit about all of us. Amy and I have been married for almost 18 years and are the parents of three wonderful children; Timmy (13), Natalie (9), and Chloe (1). We are both native Nebraskans. We first met in Kearney where we both attended UNK and worked part-time for Cabela’s Retail. In 1998 I took a position working in Cabela’s first expansion store outside of Nebraska, and in the summer of 1999 we were married. Timmy was born in Mitchell, SD in 2003. After eight years of working in stores outside of Nebraska we moved back to the Omaha area in 2006 with the opening of the LaVista location. In 2007 we welcomed Natalie, and she was actually baptized at St. Andrew’s! In 2010, after months of soul-searching, and with Amy’s support, I decided to leave Cabela’s. I spent the next year as a stay-at-home father and part-time college student trying to discern what I might do next. I also began spending quite a bit more time in church. We began attending St. Augustine’s in Elkhorn in 2009, where I began to take an active role working with the youth group. From 2011-2013 I attended UNL full-time and graduated in December of 2013 with a BA in Religious Studies. I also began the formal discernment process at St. Augustine’s in the fall of 2012. In January of 2014 I was made a postulant for Holy Orders by the Standing Committee of the Diocese, and in August of that year we moved from our home in Gretna to Alexandria, VA to begin three years of seminary at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS). Throughout the entire discernment process and seminary Amy has been incredibly open and supportive, and I truly believe that we answered this call to ordained ministry together. The past three years have been an amazing experience for our whole family. We have met and become friends with wonderful people from all around the world. Our time at the seminary and spent in the Washington, D.C. area has been such a blessing. The biggest blessing and biggest change for our lives happened with the arrival of our third child, Chloe Grace, in March 2016. In January of this year I was ordained a transitional deacon at Trinity Cathedral in Omaha, and I just graduated from VTS in May. When I am not busy working or studying, I enjoy spending my time hanging out at home with Amy and playing with our kids. I am an on again, off again runner (I completed my first and last marathon this past October), a sometimes guitarist, an aspiring amateur iconographer, and a bit of a science fiction and comic book geek. I also look forward to resuming the hunting, fishing, and camping that I have enjoyed throughout Nebraska and the Mid-West since I was a kid. While I have enjoyed my time in seminary and have learned a great deal in the classroom and at my Field Education parish, I truly believe that the most important period of formation for my lifetime in ordained ministry will be the time I spend with all of you at St. Andrew’s. The Bishop’s Society Curacy Program is an amazing opportunity and a wonderful gift for a newly ordained priest in the Church. To be able to come in to a healthy, vibrant parish and work with an experienced mentor and talented staff right out of seminary is an opportunity that not everyone has, and for this I am truly thankful. I speak for our whole family when I say that we cannot wait to begin this exciting new Chapter of our lives with you! Blessings, Tony

Approved June Vestry Minutes St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

Opening Prayer and reflection: The opening prayer and reflection dealt with Wisdom.

Approval of the Vestry meeting minutes: The minutes for the April and May meetings of the Vestry were distributed and reviewed for accuracy. The consensus of the group was to accept the minutes with no problems being noted.

Finance Report: The finance reports for April were given by Ginny. The month showed us with a positive position for the month of

nearly $15,000, but a few large payments were missed during the month due to Ginny’s absence. They were made in May so next month’s balances will be more accurate YTD. There was a discussion about how to read the Treasurer’s Report showing percentage of actual compared to budget year-to-date. That led to a discussion of some of the Fund balances and Jim and Ginny were asked to evaluate the current funds, to see if some could be combined or eliminated, and to differentiate between those that are restricted by the donors and those that are designated by the Vestry.

Jim presented the current cash position in our various checking accounts.

Rector Report: John is gone on his sabbatical from June 5 – September 5, 2017.

Associate Rector Report: Diane reported that she ordered 25 copies of “The Book” for use during the two Bible studies during the summer not knowing how many might attend and was pleased to find she only has one left.

Tony Anderson will begin work as our Curate on July 15.

Diane asked that the minutes reflect the Vestry’s appreciation to Mary Schreiber who spent a full afternoon working with Diane cleaning the main office of the church. It looks much better and her help made a big difference.

Senior Warden Report: Long Range Planning committee is going to get busy discussing what things they need to turn their attention to and

then prioritize the items in each area. Areas does not mean just physical places.

Nancy read a note from Don Peeler thanking the Vestry for the $2,500 that was given to the DR Adult Mission trip and was accompanied by his in-depth report on the trip.

Jim Schreiber is going to get information and bids from commercial cleaners on getting the church facility cleaned up and kept clean.

Junior Warden Report: Lee was not in attendance. New Business: None. Old Business: None. Committee Reports: None

Other Business: The annual council meeting will be the third week of September (always on the bye week for Nebraska football) in North Platte.

Ben commented on the fact that their used to be art in the sanctuary that had been loaned to us and finally given back to the artist. He would like to look into other opportunities for art to be displayed in those spaces and wondered who to talk to about finding appropriate artists. Several names were given to him.

Closing Prayer: Nancy closed the meeting with prayer, continuing the theme of asking for wisdom in guiding the work of the Vestry.
