JenniferTedeschiTheCalaisFoundationhelditsAnnualGala,TouchdownforSuccess2013,atMetLifeStadiumonApril18th.Theeventwasatremendoussuccessandraisedover$90,000forspecializedprogramsandservicesforthespecialneedscommunity.HostedbyNFLAlumnusandSportscasterRomanOben,theeventtookplaceinTheCommissioner’sClubandbroughttogetherSuperBowlChampions,fashion,music,andtheintroductionofanimal‐assistedtherapytobene itthespecialneedscommunity.

Itwasanaction‐packed,three‐parteventculminatingwiththeGalaReceptionintheevening.TheCalaisFoundationBreakfastofChampionsstartedthedayandguestswerewelcomedwithamorningofbusinessnetworking,stadiumtoursandtheopportunitytoheartheexperiencesofCEOofClarkDodge&Co.MichaelClarkandlifesuccessconsultantandaward‐winningmotivationalspeakerTommyHilcken.Intheafternoon,TheCalaisFoundationhostedstudentsfromTheCalaisSchoolandEssexCountyLearningCenter(ECLC)fortheStudentKickoffLuncheon.Studentsweretreatedtoahealthylunch,touredthestadium,andparticipatedindrillsandexerciseswithTheGridironGroup. (continuedfrompage1)Intheevening,guestsoftheTouchdownforSuccessGalaReceptionenjoyedacocktailreception,silentauction,stadiumtours,andafashionshowpresentedbyKarmaforaCure,asfounderMargauxMinutololaunchedanewlydesignedfashionteeshirtforTheCalaisFoundationandthespecialneedscommunity.ThehighlightoftheeveningwasthepresentationoftheMakingaDifferenceAwardtoJaniceWolfe,CEOandFounderofMerlin’sKids,andherdogWyattRidgeback.Janicehasworkedtirelesslytorescueanimalsfromeuthanasiaandtrainthemtobeservicedogsfor

specialneedschildren.Animal‐assistedtherapyhasproventobeextremelysuccessfulwithinthespecialneedscommunityandisthenewinitiativeforTheCalaisSchool.The2013TouchdownforSuccesshasproventobeafun,exciting,andpro itablewaytoincreaseawarenessofTheCalaisFoundationandTheCalaisSchool.Pleasemarkyourcalendarsfornextyear’sTouchdownforSuccess:March20th,2014.

KristyHartmanTheCalaisSchool’sFloralandLandscapeDesignclasshascreatedawonderfulvegetablegardenonourcampus.Theyresearchedtheplantsthattheywillbegrowing,drewuptheplans,preparedthegardenandplantedtheseeds.Amongthemanyhealthyvegetablestheyaregrowingarespinach,Brusselssprouts,radishes,peasandlettuce.Theywillbedonatingtheirharvesttolocalfoodbanks.WewanttothankInfraredServices,Inc.fordonatingaGeophysicalGroundPenetratingRadarandRadioDetectionSurveytomakesure

wherewewereplacingthegardenwasfreeofanyobstructions.Wecouldnotproceedwiththegardenwithouttheirgenerouscontribution.ThankyouInfraredServices!

FloralandLandscapeDesignClassProject

LaurenPalmisanoTheCalaisSchoolrecentlycompletedapilotprogramforanimal‐assistedspeechtherapy.Childreninthethirdthrougheighthgradesparticipatedin ivesessionseach,withthefocusbeingonimprovingourunderstandingofourselvesanddogsviaexploringpersonaltraits,responsestocompliments,verbalandnonverbalcommunication,andexpressionoffeelings,inbothhumansanddogs.

Duringthe irstandsecondlessons,thestudentsdiscussedtheirownpersonalstrengthsandweaknesses,andrewardsandcompliments,withthestudentsdescribinghowtheyfeelwhentheyreceiveacomplimentornegativefeedback.Wediscussedhoweachmayaffectthelikelihoodofagivenbehaviorbeingrepeated.Thethirdlessonfocusedonappropriatelyaskingquestionsinordertogainneededinformation,whilecontinuingtoexploredifferencesbetweenindividualpeopleandanimals.Thelasttwosessionsfocusedonfeelings,withcontinuedworkonnonverbalcommunication.We irstexploredvariouswaysinwhichweconveyemotionwithoutusingwords,suchasourfacialexpression,gestures,andtoneofvoice.Thestudentsreadvariousphrasesoutloudinvaryingtonesofvoice,tobetterappreciatehowthereismoretoanintendedmessagethanjusttheactualwordschosen.Lastly,wediscussedappropriateandinappropriatewaytoexpresshowwefeel.Studentslistedtechniquestousewhentheyfeelangry,suchascountingto10,takingawalk,andgoingtoCRC.Atthecompletionofeachlesson,atherapydogenteredtheroomandthestudentsengagedinacarry‐overactivitywheretheyappliedwhattheyhadlearned,observedthedog’sbehavior,andaskedthetraineradditionalquestions.Thestudentsallreallyenjoyedtheirtimewiththedogandhadappropriateconversationswitheachother.Whilesharingstoriesabouttheirownpetsandexperienceswithanimals,theyaskedeachotherappropriatequestions,whileworkingtomaintaintopics,taketurnsspeaking,andestablisheyecontactwithothersinthegroup.Theydidwellobservingthedog’sbehaviortoinferwhathewascommunicatingandhowhewasfeeling,withtheintentionbeingthattheywillcarry‐overtheirknowledgetofuturesocialinteractions.Overall,animal‐assistedspeechtherapywasahugesuccess!

SteveSokolewiczInMarch,studentsfromTheCalaisSchoolwereinvitedtovisitthecampusoftheCountyCollegeofMorris.OurhostoncampuswasProf.JaneRu inooftheDisabilityServicesOf ice.Sevenstudentsingrades11and12wereprovidedanoverviewoftheprogramsandservicesofferedattheschool.

ThedaybeganatShef ieldHallwithapresentationfromCCM'sDisabilitiesSpecialist.Studentsalsohadthepleasureofmeetingstaffandpersonnelassociatedwiththedepartment.AdditionalinformationofferedtoCalaisstudentsfocusedondifferencesbetweenwhatcanbeexpectedinatransitiontocollegecampuslife.Foreveryonepresent,theinitialmessagefocusedonadditionalresponsibilitiesontheshouldersofthestudent.Recommendedtostudentswastheconceptofembracingthecurrenttechnologiesathand.CurrentCCMprogramshighlightedincludedbothKurzweil,areadingprogramthatassistsinscanningtext,andiPadtechnologieswhichbothenhancethelearningenvironment.AlsoofferedtoourstudentsduringthisworkshopwereinformationonthevariousaccommodationsprovidedatCCM.Suggestedservicesincludedworkshops,orientationsandaPeerMentoringandSupportgroup.Timeandtimeagain,studentsweretoldtotakeadvantagesofadditionalservicesprovided.OneprogramofinterestwascalledJUMPSTART.ThisprogramwasofferedtoincomingstudentstooffertheopportunitytofamiliarizethestudentswithcampuslifeatCCM.Studentsinthisprogramweregivenachancetoreviewthecampus,coursewhichwouldbetaken,meetwithstaff,andgainusefulinsightpriortothestartoftheschoolyear.CalaisstudentsthenmetwithCCMStudentAmbassadorBrielle,whoshowedoffvariousacademicandrecreationalbuildings.OfparticularinteresttotheCalaisstudentswerethegymnasium,poolarea,andlibrary.Allofthecampussitespiquedthestudents'interestinattendinganinstitutionofhigherlearning.

IamsincerelyproudoftheprogressthestudentsatTheCalaisSchoolhavemadeinphysicaleducationwithregardstoeffort,athleticism,teamwork,andsportsmanship.Wecompletedourbadmintonunitandsincethestudentsweresointerestedinthesportwebegananintramuralbadmintongroupforthemiddleschoolstudents.Thestudentshavereallyenjoyedintramuralsportsbecausetheygettosocializeandcompeteagainstfriendswhoareinotherphysicaleducationclasses.Inphysicaleducation,wehavebeenoutsideexploringandtheweatherhasbeenbeautifulforus!Wehavebeenveryexcitedwithourcurrentunit,softball,andwillbecontinuingtoplayuntilthemiddleofMay.Whenoursoftballunitendswewilldoourbesttostayoutdoorswithunitssuchasfrisbeegolf/ultimatefrisbee,lacrosse,andrelayraces.Ithas

certainlybeenafun illedyearandwearelookingforwardtoendingtheschoolyearonapositivenote!

MichaelL.Ifeelthatpayingtwodollarstogetintoaparkiscrazy.Theparkcommissioncanmakemoremoneybyhavingfundraisersandbyrentingoutpartoftheparktoshopkeepersandfoodstands.Theparkcommissioncanchargeforeventssuchassummerconcertsandbikeandhoundraces.Therentmoneycouldhelpmaintainthepark.Peoplewouldnotliketopayatwodollarfee.Sotheywouldgotoaparkthatdoesn’tmakethempay.Peoplewouldrathergotoastoreorafundraiserbecausetheycangetsomethingusefulorsomethingthattheyneedorwant.Peoplepaytaxesandsomemoreofthatmoneyshouldgotothepark.Themoneycansupporttheparkandkeeptheequipmentingoodcondition.Peopleshouldnothavetopayforwalkingatrailoradog.FinallythisiswhyIthinkparksshouldstayfree.

JamalC.IagreeonpayingtwodollarsattheentranceofaCommunityPark.AreasonIwouldpayformychildrentogototheparkissothattheparkcanearnmoneytoupgradetheplaygroundsandrestrooms.ThereasonotherparentsandIwouldlikemoresanitaryplaygroundsandrestroomsisbecausetherearealotofgermsandthe lugoingaroundandspreading.Therewouldbearecreationcenterandadaycareforthecommunityinsteadofparentsstayinghomewiththeirchildrenandmissingwork.Theworkerswouldbegettingpaidtoworkwithsomeofthemoneytheyearnortheycanvolunteertojusthelpoutthetown. Theycanusetheparkortherecreationcenterforparties,weddings,etc.Peoplecanrentouttherecreationcenterformeetingstoo.Ithinktheparkcoulduserecyclingbinstokeeptheparkclean.Ithinktheparkshouldalsohaveaduckpondandearnmoneybyhavingastandwherepeoplecanbuyduckfeed.Iamsurethatparentsandtheirchildrenwouldliketofeedducksbecauseducksarebeautifulandsweet.Duckswillalsobeattractedbythewaterwhenit’swarmandtheduckswillkeepcomingtheretogetfed.ThatisthereasonIwouldlikepeopletopayatwodollarentrancefeeatcommunityparks.

MeganLoBueBothEarthDayandArborDayoccurredinAprilandCalaisLowerSchoolstudentscelebratedbyplantingaSweetbayMagnolia(Magnoliavirginiana)treewithlocalarboristLorraineKonopka.LorrainesharedthehistoryofArborDaywiththestudentsandshowedthemhowtocareforourtree.TheHanoverTownshipEnvironmentalCommissiondonatedthetreeandNJForestNurserydonatedseedlingsforstudentstoplantathome.Thankyouforyourgenerosity!

DavidDiGraziaTheCalaisSchoolwillpresenttheirannualSpringConcertontheafternoonofMay17th.TheconcertwillbeattendedbyallstudentsandwillfeaturevariousperformanceensemblesincludingTheCalaisSchoolConcertBand,Chorus,SymphonicBand,andJazzEnsemble.TheperforminggroupswillbeshowcasingwellknownmusicalselectionsfromBroadwayandWaltDisneyProductionsincluding“Annie,”“MaryPoppins,”“TheLittleMermaid,”and“Aladdin.”Theconcertwillbeinthecafeteriaandwillbeginat1:30pm.ParentsandrelativesofallstudentsarewelcometoattendandgetwarmedupforsummerwiththisgreatshowofCalais’syoungmusicians.Ithastrulybeenagreatschoolyear!Hopetoseeyouallthere!
