Life in Vietnam
Life in Vietnam was harsh. It was a communist government, whichmeans there was no democracy. My mum was a teacher in
Vietnam.
My dad worked in a factory. Mum and dad met at a friend’s party, they fell
in love. They used to skip school together, they were caught by mygrandmother skipping school. My grandmother agreed for them to get
married.
After a few years my sister (Thuy) was born, then my brother (Tai), a couple
of years later my sister died, when she was hit by a truck as she was riding to
school with mum, then I was born one year later.

Arriving in AustraliaWhen we arrived at my uncle and aunt’s house, we gave them clothes and
they gave us money. We stayed there for a few days. We got our first house
in Sunshine, we lived there for 6 months, it was very quiet compared to
where we lived in Vietnam. We then moved to Kings Park, then a year later
we moved to St. Albans.
When we first got here mum
looked after us kids and dad
worked, but then dad got sick
and couldn’t work, so it was
hard for us because mum had to
go to work and we had to get
by on only one income. In
2007, my dad went back to
Vietnam, because he wasn’thappy living in Australia, but
my mum stayed with us so we
could have better opportunities.
After he left, Mum learned how
to drive, and we used to drive
around to explore the city

When we first came to Australia, we were
shocked because it was so clean, and that
there wasn’t as many people around, so it
wasn’t as busy as it is in Vietnam. Everyone
was talking, but I couldn’t understand what
they were saying. We were a bit worried and
my brother joked
That he thought people were trying to steal us.

Australia NowMy mum feels very comfortable in Australia, she really likes living in
Australia. I think this is a very good country. I miss some of my family and
friends who are living in Vietnam.
