PrologueMy name is Linh and I'm in grade 5. This year in

grade 5 we're learning about migration. In the class

we have been writing about our migration journey toAustralia. We have been interviewing our parents

about their migration story and discussing it with

    others in our class.

Son (our Language Support Teacher) told us abouthis hardship in Vietnam and how he escaped and

migrated to Australia. We discovered that there are

many different reasons why people migrate to another country. This

includes, finding peace, to have a different environment, to re-unite withtheir family, to have a better job or education, or for a different lifestyle.

For me, Ive migrated to Australia to re-unite with my dad.

In our class we found out that many of our parents migrated for peacebecause there was war in their country. Many people had to leave their

home for safety. Some of our family left to find a different environment.

Other people may also migrate if their country had a natural disaster like a

cyclones or a flood. Some also left their country to find better jobs and

education. Some also migrated for a different or better lifestyle. Theywere perhaps seeking adventure and or a new change. Some of our

families migrated to reunite with their family in Australia. This is the

reason why I migrated with my mum.

From learning about all the different reasons why people migrated to

Australia, we decided to make a book about our journeys to Australia. We

have done a lot of preparation before writing our stories. We collected

data and made charts and graphs. We also investigated the country where

our parents migrated from by making a fact file about our country. Wemade a Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences between

Australia and the country our family migrated from. I have enjoyedlearning about my family and others journey to

Australia. This is my story, on how I migrated to Australia when I was

six years old .Ive have enjoyed writing this story.

Mums ChildhoodBetween 1974 and 1994 life in Vietnam for my mum and her family was

very hard. Mum lived in a family with three older sisters, one youngerbrother and Ngoai (grandma). They were very poor. It was very hard tofind a job that would suit them. Many Vietnam people were living in

poverty. They didnt have much money to buy books so they had to use

    one book for two subjects.

Every day, Ngoai would go out and sell sticky rice for money. Sometimes

mum went with her too. Each night they would all squish up together in a

small room and sleep. Life was very hard. Mum didn't get to choose what

she wanted to eat or do whatever she liked.

Vietnam was and still is a communist country. Mum and her family didnthave much freedom at all. They had to work for money to live. Selling

sticky rice didnt earn much money but Grandma stuck to it. Sometimes

    after a

    tired day of

    selling

    sticky rice,

    Grandma would

    be left with some

    sticky rice andthat would be

    their dinner.

    There are a lot of

    different types of

    sticky rice and it

    is very easy to

    make. Everyearly day,

Grandma would make sticky rice while mum and her siblings would getready for school. They just walked to school by themselves and would

never need the help of Grandma to drop them off. Sometimes if they came

home late from school, Grandma would hit them with a pipe. They would

never like to break the rules or come home late. Everyday they'd rush

home together. Before they had dinner they'd do their homework. Mum

and her family didn't care about TV or cameras...They didn't need alot ofthings. Mum and here family couldn't afford expensive things. Mum

couldn't complain so they had toagree with everything. There was not

much hope. It wasn't very easy. After

a while their life became better and

    better.

    Life inVietnam

    In 1997 mum gave birth

to me. At that time, life

for me was verycomfortable. When I was four I went to

Kinder at Vietnam with my cousin. I lovedthat school. I also had tutoring. My teacher

was Miss Bay. She was a very strict teacher.

We would get slap if we don't hold the pencil

correctly. In class I used to swap pencil with

    the person

Sitting next to me .I had a pacer and the

person nest to me had a normal pencil.

    All my relatives

    lived in Vietnam.

    At that time Dad

    was in Australia

working for money to sponsor mum and I to

come over. Every morning at 8 oclock Id

wake up and do my work. If I did a lot of work,

mum would give me a reward. Life was

looking great! Sometimes mum would leaveme at home by myself. I would stay in my

bedroom and watch TV. I lived in a normal

house just like the houses of today. This is a photo of myhouse in Vietnam

This is a photo of mum and

    me at the airport

Deciding to leaveIn 2003 mum decided to leave Vietnam (Ho chi Minh). Dad had enough

money to sponsor her and me over to Australia (Melbourne). I had no idea

what was happening. Mum packed everything a week before leavingVietnam. We had a lot of luggage. She sold the house to Grandma and said

that we were going to re-unite with dad.

At the AirportMy uncle was a taxi driver so he drove mum and me to Tan San Nhat

airport. All of my relatives were at the airport already. They helped mumand I carry the luggage into the airport. I could tell that they had a sad

expression on their face but I didnt dare to ask why. After they took theluggage into the airport they started crying. Mum was crying too. I was the

only one that wasnt crying. Then it was time to leave.

On the aeroplaneMum and I were on a plane heading for Australia. I felt really sick and

vomited in the plane. I didnt feel very comfortable. It was the first timeId been on a plane and it was the first time I had travelled somewhere. It

took about nine hours to arrive at Australia. I was very nervous.

Arriving at MelbourneFinally mum and I arrived

    at Melbourne Airport. As

we expected dad waswaiting for us at the

    entrance. The world around

me changed completely. There were a lot of people

talking in a weird language(English). It was very noisy

at the airport. On the way

    when dad was driving mum

and I home there was a lotof things that I had never

    seen before.

First ImpressionMum and I arrived at our new home. I was still feeling sick and felt really

sad because I had left my home and my relatives. Our new home was very

different too. Our home in Vietnam had mostly tile floors but our newhouse had carpet.

SettlingMum and I arrived at our new home. Our new house was a house that wasrent. I was still feeling sick and felt really sad because I had left my home

and my relatives. Our new home was very different too. Our home in

Vietnam had mostly tile floors but our new house had carpet.

Going to schoolAfter a while settling in our new home I had to go to school. I first went toSt.Albans West. My teacher was Miss Clair. Every Monday I would

After a while, dad wanted to buy a house with his own money. He had

enough money to buy a house in Delahey. At first I wasnt used to living

in my new house but finally I got use to it. The house was much bigger

    than our old house.

have another teacher other than Miss Clair. I would always have to do onthe weekend I went to. or other harder work .The hardest thing was to

understand my class mates or the teacher and speak English. The only

thing I knew was to count one to ten and say hello. Sometimes I couldnt

understand the teacher and the teacher would have to do sign language. I

couldn't speak to anyone so I had no friends at all. Sometimes mum would

give me money to buy some food at the canteen. I didnt know how tospeak English so I had to point to the food the wanted. Australias money

was very different than Vietnams money. For example 2000 Vietnams

    money = 15c in Australia.

Moving housesAfter a while, dad wanted to

buy a house with his own

money. He had enoughmoney to buy a house in

    Delahey. At first I wasnt

used to living in my new

house but finally I got use

to it. The house was much

    bigger than our old house

    and there were more rooms.

Going to a new schoolMum said that I had to go to a new school. She told me that it was called

Kings Park Primary School. I didnt like the idea of that but I had to agree.

Mum walked me to school. I

arrived at my new class JG. I

    was very nervous. My teacher

was Miss Gruss. I felt really

scared. I started to cry. Mum leftme. There were a lot of people

in my class. When I walked into

    the class everybody looked at

me. It was very hard to

    comprehend my teacher and my

    classmates. Sometimes I

struggled in my work but I hadThis is photo of me in Kings Park

the support of the teacher. I didnthave any friends at all. At playtime

and lunch time I used to follow

    some people around. They'd say

stop following us but I could never

understand them. Miss Gruss was a

nice teacher. At first I wasnt usedto the school but after a while I

was. Sometimes I would get lost.

King's Park was so different to my

old school St.Albans West. InSt.Albans West there was no library

at all. When we wanted to borrow

books we had to walk to the

St.Albans Library. There were no buses. At Kings Park Primary School

we got to learn lots of things like music, art, Japanese and sport, but in

St.Albans West they didn't have music or art. At Kings Park Primary

school I had a lot of fun.

Aussie life nowAussie life now is really great. As usual I go to school and my dad and

mum have a stable job. Im very very lucky to live in a country like

Australia. I really miss my relatives in Vietnam but thats OK. Sometimesat the end of the year I go back to Vietnam for a holiday and visit my

relatives and friends. I have six people in my house now. My dad, mum,

auntie, my aunties daughter Cindy and her son Andy. Andy and Cindy go

to school with me at Kings Park Primary School. My life is awesome!

Australia nowAustralia to me is a great country to live in. I'm very

glad that I live in country like Australia. If I didnt

migrate to Australia I wouldnt have a good education, a

better lifestyle or a better environment. I really likeAustralia but I like Vietnam more because its the country that I was born

in and I have a lot of special memories in that country.
