Final Report for Trial No. 1995 – Sweet Peas 2014 1
RHS Sweet Pea Trial 2014
Objectives: To assess, compare and demonstrate the cultivation of a range of seedlings and named cultivars submitted by professional and amateur breeders. To recommend plants for the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit and Exhibition Awards.
Location:
RHS Garden, Wisley, Woking, Surrey, GU23 6QB. Cultivation:
Seed was chitted and sown under glass on 6th, 7th (and 15th for late entries) November 2013. Entries were pricked out on 19th-21st (and 27th for late entries) November 2013 and at this stage a bio-fungicide (T34 Biocontrol, active ingredient Trichoderma asperellum strain T34) drench was used. The plants were moved to the cold frames to be hardened off on 11 December 2013. They were fleeced over to protect them from the cold as and when necessary.
Sweet Pea Trial Plants in Coldframe 14th January 2014
There had been damping off problems with some seedlings whilst they were in propagation. Seeds were re-sown as necessary to ensure the correct number of plants was produced for the trial.
The mild weather early in the year meant that the plants grew very quickly and the bush grown entries began to outgrow their support frames. As the side shoots were still quite short (around 2-3cm) but the lead shoot so tall, the tips of the bush grown entries were pinched out on 19th February 2014.
A soil analysis was undertaken and the pH was found to be a little high at pH (7.3) but the use of sulphate based fertilisers helped to reduce this.
Final Report for Trial No. 1995 – Sweet Peas 2014 2
Base dressings of sulphate of potash for potassium at 30g/m 2 (1.2oz/yd 2) and kieserite for magnesium at 20g/m 2 (0.8oz/yd 2), were applied for optimum levels on 14th March 2014.
The plants were gradually hardened off before being planted out on 3rd (all bushes and open ground miniatures), 7th (all cordons) and 8th (miniatures in containers and hanging baskets) April 2014.
Trial Being Planted 3rd April 2014
The trial was planted through landscape fabric to prevent weeds and also to help preserve moisture in the soil. Irrigation pipes were placed underneath the landscape fabric and irrigation was applied when necessary.
The following sprays were used on the trial:
11th & 24th April – preventative anti-fungal and growth stimulant Garshield (active ingredients: garlic, citrus and seaweed)
23rd May - preventative fungicide Systhane (active ingredient Myclobutanil)
9th May – foliar feed with Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) at 10g/L to treat the magnesium deficiency. The main symptom of magnesium deficiency is chlorosis (the leaf veins stay green and the areas between the leaf veins yellow).
16th May – foliar feed with Sangrol 3:1:1 on cordon entries only
23rd May - preventative fungicide Systhane (active ingredient Myclobutanil)
5th & 24th June - mix of preventative fungicide Signum (active ingredients Boscalid/Pyraclostrobin) and insecticide Aphox (active ingredient Pirimicarb) against aphids
The following sprays were used on the plants after the final assessment:
10th July - mix of preventative fungicide Systhane (active ingredient Myclobutanil) and
insecticide Aphox (active ingredient Pirimicarb) against aphids
24th July - mix of preventative fungicide SWITCH (active ingredients Cyprodinil/ fludioxonil) and insecticide Aphox (active ingredient Pirimicarb) against aphids
No spray damage (from spray drying on flower petals) was noted during the course of the trial.
All plants were removed on 30th July 2014 once the trial was complete.
Final Report for Trial No. 1995 – Sweet Peas 2014 3
Bush grown entries
These plants were supported by wire frames and allowed to develop naturally without removal of tendrils, side-shoots or flowers. The wire frames were made using 3 x 2.4m (8ft) bamboo canes and wire deer fencing with 20cm x 20cm squares. Using a piece of wire fencing 7 squares wide, a cylinder shape is made. This ends up being approximately 45cm in diameter. The lower section is put in place first and a bamboo cane is pushed approx. 30cm (1ft) into the ground to support it.
The top section is constructed in the same way and weaved onto the first. The remaining 2 bamboo canes are pushed into place to hold the 2 sections together. The cane and wire are tied together at the top, middle and bottom to secure them further.
The bushes are spaced 1m apart with 2m between each entry group.
As the plants grew, they were simply tied up with loops of twine around the frame as and when required.
Cordon-grown entries
Cordon grown plants produce the largest flowers and longest stems. The plants were spaced 30cm apart in parallel rows and were trained as double cordons - two shoots from each plant were trained up separate canes. Tendrils and side-shoots are regularly removed, all flowers up to the bottom wire also being removed.
Entries in Containers and Hanging Baskets Some of the dwarf entries were grown in containers and hanging baskets to demonstrate their versatility. These were planted 6 per container or hanging basket.
Deadheading
All entries were regularly deadheaded to prevent seed-pods developing and to encourage repeat flowering.
Meteorological Report and Findings:
RHS Garden Wisley recorded a new high for rainfall in February 2014 with 123.6mm recorded. This was nearly 2.5 times the long term mean for the month of 50.2mm. Whilst it was very wet and
blustery, February remained very mild (mean daily temperature of 7.4C vs long term February
mean of 5.6C) with no air frosts. The Met Office declared this as Southern England's wettest winter since 1766. March 2014 was generally dry and mild with lots of sunshine (172.7 hours of sunshine vs long term March mean of 118.2 hours). However there were a high number of grass frosts due to the clear nights. Dry, sunny spells alternated with wetter, cooler spells in both April and May. The mild weather seen in March continued into April and May making 2014 one of the warmest springs on record.
March's mean daily temperature was 8.5C vs the long term March mean of 7.2C. April had a
mean daily temperature of 11C vs the long term April of 9.4C. May's mean daily temperature
was 12.8C vs the long term May mean of 12.5C.
June was officially the 6th warmest ever recorded with a daily mean of 16.1C vs the long term
mean of 15.5C.
A few plants were removed from the trial as they were exhibiting symptoms of mosaic virus.
Aphids did not cause a problem in this year's trial.
Final Report for Trial No. 1995 – Sweet Peas 2014 4
In a change to the planting layout, the dwarf entries were planted along the edge of the bed. This was very successful as visitors could see the plants up close.
Dwarf entries along the edge of the bed
The woven birch supports used for the semi-dwarf entries had great decorative appeal.
Entry 16 'Hannah's Harmony' Entry 16 'Hannah's Harmony'
on 20th June 2014 on 21st July 2014
As with a number of previous years, the cordon grown plants did not perform very well at Wisley. A few trial plants had suffered a little from the shade of nearby trees. Generally the trial plants had performed very well this year and there had been no scorch. Although the bushes were not considered to be as big and robust as they had been the previous year, they had been beautiful.
Records:
A record was made of the date of the first flowers and 50% flowering. Judging:
Each entry was assessed by 3 teams of RHS Sweet Pea Advisory Group members. Each of the 3 team leaders represented the final recommendations made by their team for each trial entry and voted on possible awards. The trial was assessed on 20th and 26th June.
Final Report for Trial No. 1995 – Sweet Peas 2014 5
Trial assessment on 20th June 2014
Recommendation for the Award of Garden Merit: Those entries which had received at least 2 votes in favour from team leaders were voted on by all members of the Advisory Group to confirm the recommendation. A number of entries which had received 1 vote in favour were also discussed. In order to receive an Award of Garden Merit, a cultivar must perform well for two flowering seasons and receive a 3 to 1 voting majority. The criteria used for judging were: general visual impact; vigour and health of plants; quality and quantity of blooms; colour; scent; length of flowering season.
The Advisory Group awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's AWARD OF GARDEN MERIT (H2) to the following after two years of trials:
