MICROSOFT LYNC – STUDENTS
Microsoft Lync supports both instant messaging and online meeting functions
Microsoft Lync can be accessed in the following ways:
1. Web Interface
Join a meeting from your Office365 page
2. Desktop Client
Students can download the Microsoft Lync desktop client from their Office
365 page. Note that the Lync desktop client is pre-installed on Seton Hall
University laptops with Office 2013
3. Windows 8 Modern UI app
Interact with Microsoft Lync features from a full-screen Windows 8
Modern UI app
Please note: Microsoft Lync is authenticating with your PirateNet credentials. When you change
your PirateNet password, you will need to change your password in both the
Microsoft Lync app (Windows 8 Modern UI), and the Microsoft Lync Desktop Client
(Windows 7 and Windows 8 Desktop).

DOWNLOADING THE MICROSOFT LYNC DESKTOP CLIENT
The Microsoft Lync Desktop Client can be downloaded from your Office365 page.

Start by opening a web browser
and going to: http://www.shu.edu
and select the PirateNet link in the
upper right corner

Select the Student Email button

Enter your Seton Hall University
shortname (smithjoh) and
password

Your Office365 page will default to
display your eMail

Select the Office 365 settings link
in settings ( ) menu

On the Office 365 settings page,
select the software link

Select Lync from the menu on the
left, then select the install button.
A small *.exe file will start to
download. Run this file to install
the Microsoft Lync desktop client.

The Microsoft Lync software will
start to install on your laptop

SETTING UP THE MICROSOFT LYNC DESKTOP CLIENT
The Microsoft Lync Desktop Client will authenticate against your PirateNet credentials.

If the Lync desktop client does not
automatically launch, manually
launch the program from:
Windows 7 Windows 8
Start > All Programs > Microsoft
Office 2013 > Lync 2013
Windows 8 Start Screen > Lync

When the Microsoft Lync software
is launched, you will be prompted
to sign-in.

pop-up. Select the Accept
button to accept the
Microsoft Office License
Agreement and proceed

pop-up. Enter your
[email protected] in the
email field, then select
Next
2c A password field will then
be displayed. Enter your
PirateNet password, and
select Sign In

In the Sign-in address: field, enter
your [email protected]
In the Password: field, enter your
PirateNet password
Select the Sign in button at the
bottom of the window

Your name will be displayed at the
top of the Lync window.
In the Find Someone field, enter a
name to locate others at Seton
Hall University who are using Lync

WINDOWS 8 MODERN UI APP
The Microsoft Lync Windows 8 Modern UI app will authenticate against your PirateNet
credentials.

From the Windows 8 Modern UI
Start Screen, launch the Store app

Search for the Lync app
tip: in Windows 8 Modern UI
environments, you can just start
typing to initiate a search

Once the Windows 8 Modern UI
Lync app has been installed, the
following tile will be added to your
Start Screen

The first time that the Windows 8
Modern UI Lync app is launched, a
few settings need to be confirmed
Select the OK button to proceed

Select the Allow button to let Lync
run in the background

Select the Allow button to let Lync
have access to your webcam and
microphone

Joining the Customer Experience
Improvement Program is optional.
Select Join or No, Thanks based on
your preference

In the Sign in address field, enter
your [email protected]
Then select the Sign in button

information, including Contacts
and History

To log out of the Windows 8
Modern UI Lync app, select the
“What’s happening today?” field
in the upper right corner of the
screen, then select the Sign out
button at the bottom of the page
