The battle with COVID: This past week our mayor's original mandate concerning limit occupancy's at Mass was rescinded – we will continue on as we have with Mass and how occupancy is filled. We will continue to have every other pew roped off and we ask that those not of the same household observe proper social distancing. And of course – please keep in mind proper hand hygiene when coming to our parish.
Concerning the use of masks: I request all to comply with recent State and City mask requirements.
Bishop Folda and I urge all to cooperate with these emergency measures at this time during worship
and compliance with the law whenever it is binding for our churches, offices, and other facilities.
MSGR. VAL GROSS Our parish's founding pastor
This past week Msgr. Val Gross passed away. He was 83 years old. Msgr. Gross is arguably the single most important
person in the history of our parish of Sts. Anne & Joachim. We have had so many good people in our parish in its 25 years – our
Lord God has been so very good to us in that way. But Msgr. Gross was a cut above all the rest.
He was the founding pastor of our parish, and Bishop Sullivan could not have picked a better priest for the job. That was
back in 1995, when Bishop Sullivan determined it was time to begin a new parish in south Fargo. That's always the easy part – "we
need to do it." The next part is much harder – and much more important: "Who do I choose to do it?" Bishop Sullivan asked Msgr.
Gross, pastor of his beloved parish of Blessed Sacrament to leave that behind and move over to south Fargo to begin a new parish.
Msgr. Gross was perfect for that position at that time and in this place. He was a "people person" – and you need someone
like that to do something like he did. Not every priest would be a good pick for that, including myself. But I think everyone knew
Msgr. Gross would be the perfect choice, and Bishop Sullivan knew it, too. And . . . Msgr. accepted, moved, and began what is
now certainly a fine Catholic parish family: Sts. Anne & Joachim.
Msgr. Gross set all the precedents for this parish. And we're following all of his precedents to this day, as best we can.
We've had to add in things to the parish life as it has grown and as the years have gone by, but Msgr.'s foundation remains: fidelity
and love for the Church, the Bride of Christ; the life of prayer and worship to God in the Church and the parish; the respect and
obedience to our bishop and service to our diocesan family. There is certainly more – but suffice to say, our parish will always be
indebted to our founding pastor, whether all of us know that or not. We have and enjoy the fruits of what he had the privilege to
begin.
I've known Msgr. Gross for most of my life. His first parish assignment as a priest was to Holy Spirit parish in north Fargo,
my home parish. He came there after his ordination in 1963, and stayed for about 5 years, I believe. I was very young at the time
(born in 1962), but I do have memories of him from that time. He had an infectious personality. I got to know him better when I
became a seminarian for the Diocese of Fargo in the 1980's. He was the rector at Cardinal Muench Seminary at that time, and
although I didn't attend CMS myself, I was over there quite often for various matters and had many interactions with him. Once I
was ordained in 1990 I got to know him even better, and I never would have imagined as a younger priest that one day I would
follow him as pastor in his last pastoral assignment at Sts. A & J. One of the first things I did upon knowing I would become this
parish's third pastor in 2009 was to contact Msgr. Gross and visit with him about this parish family he so loved. I'd like to think he
helped me to start my time as pastor on the proper foundations.
Msgr. Gross was called by our Lord to suffer much in his last years. He carried many crosses of suffering in his body and
spirit. He imitated our Lord Jesus in ending his life after much suffering and in the Father's hands. He certainly has every
expectation of resting in peace. I can almost hear Our Lord saying to him, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." But I will
pray for him, and I ask you to offer a prayer for him, too. He is now one of the specials souls of the dead that this parish can pray
for. May he rest in the peace he so richly deserves.

Prayers for our Nation Please join us in praying the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and the Holy Rosary for our nation and unity of Christians on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. at Winnie Savageau's home, 1218 - 48th Ave S, Fargo. Phone 232-6589. Everyone is welcome!
Sts. Anne & Joachim’s Rosary Group meets every Friday after the noon Mass in the Magnificat Chapel to pray for our country and for our children and grandchildren. Coffee and conversation are held
afterwards in the Breakfast Nook (near the front entrance to the main church). All are welcome.
You may remember that due to the shutdown of the parish in March and April we had a special set of Confirmation/First
Eucharist Masses during the month of June. We also determined at that time to have one more final opportunity for that in the month of
November. This past Monday we had that special Mass for the rest of that group of third graders who weren't able to receive those
sacraments in the summer. There were four of our young people who received the gifts of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation and the Body of
Our Lord in Communion for the first time. (We also had the last of our previous year's RCIA candidates received into the Catholic Church
and given the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist.)
Of course, we have begun a new year of RE for this year's third graders, and a new set of RCIA candidates/catechumens. God
willing . . . the former will receive their sacraments from the bishop himself come April, and the latter will be received into the Church at
the Easter Vigil. Some things have been very different this year, as we all know, but we still get them done. We keep moving forward.
* * *
Some of you may remember that back in March when Masses were shut down I began to send out daily e-mails to our
parishioners. I discontinued that at the end of the month of May with the ending of the season of Easter. The feedback I received on that
effort was positive, and I have decided to start that up again for the seasons of Advent & Christmas. So – like it or not (and I hope you do)
I'll start up the daily emails with trivia, thoughts for the day, and any announcements on weekdays beginning Monday, November 30. I
hope you enjoy them. If not – just delete them when they come . . .

It means giving of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness or mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.
