January 10, 2021 | Baptism of the Lord
Our parishioners are not the only ones who have
special devotion to St. Joseph. So does Pope Francis. He
blessed the universal church on December 8, 2020, by
calling for a “Year of Saint Joseph,” until December 8,
2021.
In the Pope’s Apostolic Letter “Patris Corde” (With
a Father’s Heart), he describes Saint Joseph as a beloved
father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father. The
Apostolic Letter marks the 150
th
anniversary of Pope Pius
IX’s declaration of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal
Church. The Holy Father wrote “Patris Corde” against the
backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, which, he says, has
helped us see more clearly the importance of “ordinary”
people, who are far from the limelight but exercise patience
and serve their neighbors every day. In this they resemble
St. Joseph, the unnoticed, discreet and dutiful worker.
Here are some of the saintly titles Pope Francis uses
to describe St. Joseph. He is a tender father whose love is
placed at the service of the Messiah. He is a father in
obedience to God, to protect Mary and Jesus, and to teach
his Son to do the will of the father. He is an accepting
father, who accepted Mary as his wife unconditionally. He
is a father full of hope, who accepts life as it is, with all its
contradictions, frustrations and disappointments. The
carpenter of Nazareth lived with creative courage, which
emerges especially in the way we deal with difficulties. He
was able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting in
divine providence.
St. Joseph is a special patron of all those forced to
leave their native lands because of war, hatred, persecution
or poverty. (See Matthew 2: 13-15, 19-23) From St.
Joseph, writes Pope Francis, we must learn to love the
Church and the poor.
St. Joseph the Worker earned an honest living to
provide for his family. He taught us the value, dignity and
joy of what it means to eat bread that is the fruit of one’s
own labor. In this regard the pope affirms Catholic social
teaching on the meaning of work and support of all workers.
Work is a means of participating in the work of salvation, to
develop our own God-given talents and abilities and to
hasten the coming of the reign of God on earth. Especially
in light of rising unemployment due to the Covid-19
pandemic, the pope calls all nations to review our priorities
and to express our firm conviction that no young person or
anyone with dependents should be without work.
Using the image of a Polish theologian, Pope
Francis describes Joseph’s fatherhood of Jesus as “the
earthly shadow of the heavenly Father.” Pope Francis
writes, “fathers are not born but made.” “A man does not
become a father simply by bringing a child into the world,
but by taking on the responsibility to care for that child.” St.
Joseph is also described “a most chaste father,” which is
the opposite of domineering possessiveness. He lived and
loved with extraordinary freedom. He never made himself
the center of things, focusing rather on the lives of Mary and
Jesus.
At the end of “Patris Corde” Pope Francis offers us
a prayer to St. Joseph, which he encourages all followers of
Christ to pray:
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust, with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide
us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and
courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.
For this special “Year of St. Joseph” Pope Francis
invites all who have devotion to him to receive a plenary
indulgence. The usual conditions necessary are sacramental
confession, reception of Holy Communion, and prayer for
the pope’s intentions. Pope Francis has also expanded the
conditions for those who are prevented from going to Mass.
One may meditate for at least one half hour on St. Joseph
and his many titles and virtues. The indulgence can also be
obtained by those who, following St. Joseph’s example, will
perform a spiritual or corporal work of mercy. Praying the
Rosary is encouraged in families and among engaged
couples.
All are urged to entrust their daily activities to the
protection of St. Joseph, under the title of artisan and
carpenter. On May 1, 1955, Pope Pius XII instituted the
feast of St. Joseph the Worker “with the intent that the
dignity of work be recognized by all, and that it inspires
social life and laws, based on the fair distribution of rights
and duties” and promotion of the common good.
Father Jeremy Mohler wrote a fine explanation of
the details of seeking a plenary indulgence in this bulletin
last Fall. If you have any questions, please talk with him.
Let us all seek in our hearts the intentions of the
foster father of our Savior, Jesus Christ, during this Year of
Prayer. St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us!
