Over the spring and summer this year Camphill
Communities Ontario took steps to develop a more
professional approach towards its work and production
capacity. Mark Simpson, a professor at George Brown
College led 5 sessions from May to October exploring
new ways to generate revenue, improve efficiency and
revenue of current programs and to combine social and
financial benefits into all decisions, creating
transparency. All the work leaders, the executive
director, Larry Palmer, the chairs of both boards; CCO
and CFC were engaged.
Over the course of the sessions the programs and work
areas of CCO were analyzed through a variety of lenses.
Do the programs provide?
• Purposeful work
• Self development
• Developing relationships
• Practical skills
Camphill Foundation Canada – Mission, Vision, Values. Mission
Camphill Foundation Canada provides financial support and promotes the activities, programs and vision of Camphill Communities.
Camphill directs its activities towards serving children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities through education, social and
vocational programs which address the human being in its wholeness of body, soul and spirit. In addition, Camphill works to promote
sound environmental stewardship and social resilience through the practice of Biodynamic farming and gardening.
Vision
Camphill Foundation Canada will increase the scope of its work with Camphill communities across Canada. We will accomplish this
through growth in the following areas:
- Increasing our donor and data base.
- Intensifying our work towards Planned Giving and major gifts.
- Broadening our grant applications to include education and arts, argiculture, environmental sustainability, affordable housing.
- Encouraging and supporting innovative means to increase productivity and sales income in Camphill communities.
- Raising public awareness and donations through holding special events.
Values
Camphill Foundation Canada shares the core values of all Camphill communities which include:
- Creating opportunities for Living, Learning and Working Together. A heterogeneous community is a stronger community.
Each individual is a unique spiritual entity and is entitled to equal rights, respect and recognition all of which flourish best in a
community setting. Philanthropic gifts contribute significantly to the healthy growth of communities and organizations which provide
human services. The Camphill Foundation Canada is dedicated to being a conduit for such supports.

ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2010/2011
Fiscal 2010 was a quiet year of
consolidation after the purchase of 11
Donald Street in Barrie to rent to Camphill
Communities Ontario (CCO) in 2009. We
went through an “asset rich/cash poor”
period. The Donald Street house is now
home to three companions plus a fourth in
an independent-living apartment in the
basement.
We continued fundraising on Donald after
the purchase closed in July 2009, and were
grateful to receive a donation of $20,000
from the Mulock Foundation, which we
used to pay down the mortgage.
Additionally, we obtained a generous grant
of $15,000 from Harrison McCain Family
Foundation for a second greenhouse for
the biodynamic garden at Nottawasaga,
which has since been commissioned.
The Christmas Campaign raised $15,000 in
2010, which is typical of previous years.
Other donations, rental income and
income from investments brought our
gross income for the year to $131,000.
Our enduring capital is invested in a diverse
portfolio of negotiable securities, and grew
from $314,000 to $327,500 over the year.
This after we had withdrawn $11,000 in
income from investments for support to
CCO. The portfolio is invested for
income and hopefully growth of income
as certain common stocks in it increase
their dividends.
At year end, our net worth was
$612,000, representing an increase of
about $17,000 from the previous year.
Grants paid to CCO totaled $91,000,
including the greenhouse and $38,000
to assist in debt reduction. We
continue, as we have for many years to
support certain ongoing expenses of
CCO, such as CANA dues and travel
expenses, anthroposophical
medications, and a variety of small
projects.
2010 has been our tenth anniversary
year, and we have come a very long way
since our founding. We continue
optimistic about the growth
possibilities, and an increased capability
to fund Camphill needs in Canada. We
are as yet too small to justify a full-time
Executive Director and Fundraiser, but
that will not always be the case.

Social Business Strategy Evaluation of revenues and costs, market outlets,
products, numbers of companions participating were
all areas under consideration.
The final report made several recommendations and
left us with a much clearer picture of where we are at
present and a good sense of direction for the
development of the future of our work areas to the
extent that these enterprises can become another
significant source of revenue and support for
Camphill Communities Ontario.
All the costs for this initiative were underwritten by
the Camphill Foundation Canada. This follows on one
of CFC’s vision statements: To encourage and
promote innovative means to increase productivity
and sales income in Camphill Communities.
CCO now has in its hands a guide to move forward
into social enterprises which offer benefits to both
the Camphill community and the wider community
through development of more integrated and
strengthened work areas.

Innovative new donor initiative
At the beginning of this year
several coworkers began a
practice of making contributions
to Camphill through regular
payroll deductions. This is a gentle
way to provide a significant
annual donation. For example; a
$5.00 deduction per pay becomes
$130.00 annually. It demonstrates
the commitment and passion of
the very people who carry the
essential work of Camphill
Communities Ontario. We are
grateful to this innovative
approach to help CFC and would
like to encourage more
participation in this creative
initiative.
Innovative new
donor initiative
Camphill receives support from
many individuals and organizations,
and a diagram is a useful way of
showing it.
At the centre are the companions,
whose care is CCO’s reason for
being.
The next circle out consists of the
staff, Board of Directors, our friend
and financial partner – the Ontario
Ministry of Community and Social
Services, and CFC. All of these are
closely involved, in various ways.
Next out is the category of friends
and family, and interested members
of the larger community. Still very
interested, but less closely
involved. Outside that there are two
categories; a potentially interested
public, consisting of organizations
and groups who might help, or use
our places for their own events; and
members of the general public who
have the interest and take the
trouble to attend our events. But
both of these are much less involved
with our core task.
Finally there is the outer group such
as remote electronic donors and the
general public. Grant making
organizations like the Ontario
Trillium Foundation are only
interested in us if we apply.
The art of fundraising is to draw all
these groups closer to the centre
over time. That’s why we do what
we do here.

Donor Directed Gifts
It is very important to know that your gift
can be directed towards certain projects or
causes supported by the Camphill
Foundation. We have a building fund, an
education fund, or you can specify an area
where you would like to make a gift such as
one of the homes, a workshop, the garden or
farm, a special planned vacation or outing.
You can keep your donation general too
which is helpful since we have certain
expenses which are necessary but do not
have the same appeal as the former list. The
area of ACCESSIBILTY is emerging as a need
for development. Our population is aging
and there has been
Illness on a debilitating scale so that we
are becoming far more sensitive to the
needs of our companions’ accessibility.
Our walkways, home designs, transport
vehicles and staffing are requiring new
thinking to help meet the extra needs
of those with mobility challenges. The
wheelchair accessible van we recently
acquired is such an example. Such
specialized equipment comes with a
significant cost. Please consider
directing your donation to
ACCESSIBILITY NEEDS and you will be
helping to improve the physical
environment necessary to ensure a life
with fewer limitations. We are very pleased to
announce that we have a new
website: camphillfoundation.ca
This is a good source of news,
events, and information. You
can view the video; I Belong
made in 2008 on Camphill
Communities Ontario. There is
also the convenience of
donating online which requires
a credit card but give one many
options for directing your
donation plus a tax receipt
immediately. Have a look. We
would greatly appreciate any
comments or feedback.
After ten years it is good practice to
review and amend where necessary the
Bylaws that guide a corporation’s
business and practices. This year we have
undertaken such a review. It turns out to
be quite timely as the Industry Canada
has introduced a new Not for Profit
Corporations Act which requires all
federal corporations to comply with new
criteria. According to the literature from
Corporations Canada, the new regulations
will be more simple, clear and objective
than the previous requirements.

Our Greenhouse
Support Circle
This year, thanks to a major gift from the
Harrison McCain Foundation, we set up
our new greenhouse right at the
beginning of the growing season. This
structure gives a significant boost to our
garden production and extends the
growing season for a wider range of
produce. The Camphill Foundation also
contributed the funds needed to support
the installation and electrical utilities.
In addition to the greenhouse, the garden
has been able to make much needed
improvements to washroom and hygiene
facilities through grants from CFC this
year.
