Singapore’s Energy Policy
Smart Energy, Sustainable Future
Singapore is a small city state with no indigenous
resources and limited alternative energy potential
• Population: 5,000,000
• Land Area: 710.2km2
• No readily accessible hydro or geothermal energy resources
• Low wind speed (2m/s)
• Solar possible but intermittency and land area limit total deployment

• About 80% of electricity generated

• Proportion of electricity generated
from gas will increase after LNG

Fuel oil, 16.9%
Natural gas, 77.2%
Others , 5.9%
Smart Energy, Sustainable Future
• Importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) allows access to gas from all
over the world
• BG appointed as LNG Aggregator to supply 3 mtpa of LNG
(equivalent to 1 Indonesian pipeline) from 2013 onwards
– LNG to be supplied from Egypt, Trinidad & Tobago, and eventually
Australia
• Government ownership of LNG terminal ensures timely completion
despite economic downturn
LNG project will help achieve source diversification

Smart Energy, Sustainable Future
Singapore has embarked on a pre-feasibility study on
nuclear energy to determine the long-term possibilities
• A preliminary step for us to better understand the complex field of
nuclear energy
• Long time before decision is made on nuclear energy for Singapore
• Understand its implications for Singapore – key consideration is safety,
given our small size and high urban density
• Study the type of training, education and research to develop the
necessary capabilities to understand and assess safe deployment of
nuclear energy
• Will also closely monitor and learn from the developments of Japan

Supporting energy efficiency adoption is another strategy to
optimize energy usage
• Promote energy efficiency for industry, transport, buildings,
and in homes by enhancing existing incentives.
• Help companies internalise energy management and
reporting through energy audits.
• Design for efficiency (DfE)
• Energy Efficiency Improvement Assistance Scheme (EASe)
• Grant for Energy Efficient Technologies (GREET)
