Those Serving in March
If you were Jesus’ neighbor who knew His family, knew about His teaching, saw the results of His healings, then heard about His execution, would you think of His life, right then, as a failure? Especially since you knew:
The people of his hometown almost threw Him off a cliff, Luke 4:28fHis family thought that He was a bit crazy, Mark. 3: 21
His family did not believe in Him, John 7: 5
He had a ragtag group of followers
His followers had an internal power struggle and, of all times, at Passover, Luke 22: 24
He called one of His followers, Satan, when he tried to tell Jesus that He was wrong, Matthew 16: 22f
You heard that Jesus got Himself arrested and executed and:
Everyone….ran!
No one stood with Him at trial
He was turned in by one of His own guys.
You heard that He was raised from the dead and appeared to a bunch of people. That was astounding to you, but you heard that His closest followers…went fishing.
If that was all that you knew, Jesus’ life might be thought to be a failure. The Rest of the Story is: thousands came and gave their lives to Him. His followers dedicated themselves to the point of death to serve Him and teach others.
Now, today, you look back and see failures in your life. What’s the Rest of the Story? Why do failures in life taint us as “failures” rather than paint us as forgiven and faithful with Jesus? Everything that went “wrong” in Jesus’ ministry worked out in the Rest of the Story. Jesus will do the same with you and your Story.
It‘s through our failures that God accomplishes things through us that we would likely never see without them. In God’s eyes they were/are opportunities to accomplish His will in us. It’s not our failures that define us. It’s the life built on Jesus through those forgiven failures that defines us.
That’s the Rest of the Story
