The Need for Government Transparency

I started out with these questions…

•Did the financial crisis and the events leading up to it increase the

need for government transparency, oversight and citizen participation?

•How do social media websites like www.govloop.com or

www.challenge.gov facilitate or speed this transformation?

I arrived at this conclusion…

•The NEED has always been there; the convergence of technology and

society’s knowledge base had to occur.

•Thus allowing for social media sites like GovLoop.com, Challenge.gov

or even wikileaks.com to be created to allow citizens to connect WITH

government and each other to co-create value FOR the people.

• Walmart- Fighting Hunger Together Campaign

•Was a social media “challenge” to drive communities to “compete” for a

$1,000,000 donation to a local food bank

•Salt Lake City, Utah gathered an astonishing 5.3+ million “likes” in support

of the community to win this challenge. SLC population is ~1,000,000

•Coop-tition- The Sunset Blvd “Club” community.

•The Whiskey, a bar and club on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood created a Twitter

page

•The Viper Room, Red Rock Bar, Libertine, Mr. Miyagi’s

•The COMBINED Twitter lists grew 10 fold and is still growing
