SES v JESS - U16 RugbyOn the 15th of March, Sharjah’s under 16 boys scheduled a much anticipated match against JESS (Jumeirah English Speaking School) having been unable to play two previous matches due to cancellations.
The boys were playing a very experienced team, but straight from the kick-off we were able to chase down the ball and keep the opposition playing the ball in their own half. They were able to do this for quite some time until one of the JESS players kicked the ball back into the SES half. After a long chase SES still had possession and were able to keep possession until the ball was lost in a ruck, which enabled JESS to get through Sharjah’s defense and score the first try of the match.
Our team continued their impressive defensive play but at the end of the first half the score was 3 tries to 0. In the second half there were some impressive runs made by captain Toby Oakeley, who refused to stay down once he was tackled. At the end of the game the boys had played extremely bravely and had the satisfaction of knowing that they gave JESS a good game. Man of the match went to our own Lakwin Kanangara, for his excellent support throughout the match.

Rugby: SES v Dubai CollegeSharjah’s under 16 rugby team went to Dubai College on the 10th February. They knew that it wouldn’t be an easy game but still they played with spirit. They played extremely well from the kick off chasing the ball and making some exceptional tackles. SES were able to keep possession of the ball throughout the majority of the game utilizing the skills which Mr. Garrett had been teaching them in drills the previous week. The boys were able to ruck over very efficiently - this enabled SES to do something that most schools were unable to do (and which the Sharjah team were unable to do last year) and that was scoring a try against DC! The try was scored by Marcus Moore. He managed to dive through a gap in the defense to score, a result only made possible because of the aggressive attacks made on the DC try line after over 5minutes of battling for possession in DC’s half. The end result was 87-7 but the score does not reflect how well the boys played.

SES v English CollegeThe Sharjah English School boys played against EC in February but the boys faced a tough team of well seasoned players who have been playing together for a very long time. The EC side had over 10 club players coming from teams such as the Exiles or Dubai Hurricanes, whereas the Sharjah side only had 3 club players but one of them had to go off due to a head injury. Even though the boys were unable to win they played the better rugby as a team. In the end Sharjah were only able to score one try which was scored by Ibrahim after smashing through the opposition defensive line in the second half. The boys knew that they had their work cut out for them but even though they lost, they kept on playing extremely well. Outstanding players included Anton Briones who had to step up into the scrum half position after Lucas Oakeley had gone off due to concussion. All in all, the game went well and the Sharjah boys will have learnt a lot of valuable lessons.

Netball News
It’s been quiet an ac>ve few weeks for the netball teams this >me round with both our junior and senior teams aWending tournaments held at Dubai College and Repton. Both our teams gave a fantas>c display of skills and tac>cs throughout both tournaments. The seniors were up against some very difficult opposi>on which challenged them to their fullest, they managed to get a few wins and some narrow defeats; the scoreline for each game does not reflect the compe>>veness and the hard work that the senior girls showed.
The Year 7 also showed some excellent development in their games; throughout the tournament they got stronger and more compe>>ve. Again the results didn’t show the effort that each girl in the team put in, but the girls baWled on un>l the end. A special men>on to Kopana (Year 6) who kindly gave her >me to play for the Year 7s and had an outstanding performance throughout the whole tournament; she showed great strength and speed and was an asset to the team.
In the league the Year 10 played Cambridge Interna>onal and Wellington Interna>onal -‐ both games were very compe>>ve, unfortunately SES were defeated in both games but by a very close score. The Year 7 and 9 also played this month against EIS Jumeirah, and walked away with a well deserved win. The player of the match for both year groups were Hind (Year 7) and Sam (Year 9).
Both our Year 8 and Year 9 Netball teams had league games against English College. Both teams did very well against their opponents, showing excellent skill and ability throughout the en>re game. Unfortunately the Year 8’s were unsuccessful in their game, but our very own Jennifer Raad was awarded player of the match. The Year 9’s had a very successful game against their opponents, they managed to defeat English College with a fantas>c score of 13 – 3. The Year 9 player of the match was Sam Menzies.
Not only did the Yr9 beat English College but they also defeated Repton School 11-‐8. The en>re team played excellently against a very challenging team; player of the match award again went to Sam Menzies. Well done to all the girls.
