WhilstprogrammingmyfirstseasonasArtisticDirector,I’vethoughtalotabouttheremarkablelegacyofmypredecessors.In1980,RichardWherrettsetaboldvisionforwhattheworkofSTCmightbeforthepeopleofSydney–theatrethatis“grand,vulgar,intelligent,challengingandfun”.ThatvisionisverymuchpartofSTC’sDNA,andisoneI’mexcitedtocontinueandexpandupon.
I’vealsothoughtabouttheresponsibilityofrunningacompanyofthescaleofSTC.Firstandforemost,we’reheretoconnectyoutoourcountry’smostextraordinaryartists,familiarandnew.We’reheretomakeworksofambition,andtosurpriseyouwithexperiencesyou’veneverencounteredbefore.We’realsoheretocontributetotheculturalandpoliticallifeofournation.Tointerrogatewhoweare,whowe’vebeen,andtosparkconversationaboutwhowemightwanttobecome.Aboveall,we’reheretoreflectbackatyoutheever-evolvingfaceofourcity.
And,finally,I’vethoughtaboutwhattheatremeanstome,andhowbestIcansharewithyouthegreatpassionandloveIhaveforthisartform.It’satthetheatrewhereI’vehadsomeofthemosttransformativeexperiencesofmylife.It’satthetheatrewhereIhavebeenabletochangethewayIseemyself,thewayIseeothers,andthewayIseemycountry,bothpastandpresent.AnditisatthetheatrewhereI’vehadpaintedformeavisionofthefuturethathasbothchallengedandinspiredme.

Marlene is unstoppable. She’s been promoted to the top job at a London employment agency and it’s time to celebrate! Her dinner party with famous female figures from throughout history is one of playwright Caryl Churchill’s wittiest and best-known scenes.
But Marlene’s success is soon undermined by the compromises she’s made and the past she’s left behind. Privilege comes at a cost – but she might not be the one who picks up the tab.
STC favourite Helen Thomson (After Dinner) makes a very welcome return to our stage in this modern classic, widely considered as Churchill’s masterpiece. Whip-smart, funny, and ultimately very moving, Top Girls was written in London in 1982, with the cut-throat era of Thatcherism only just beginning. It asks questions about equality, feminism, wealth and family that are as pressing now as they were back then.
Resident Director Imara Savage has assembled a suitably fearless all-female ensemble including Paula Arundell (The Bleeding Tree), Kate Box (ABC’s Rake), Michelle Lim Davidson (ABC’s Utopia) and Heather Mitchell (Cloud Nine) to power this high-octane opening to our 2018 season.

A true story
A young writer in Melbourne’s inner suburbs quits her day job in a clothing store to find something new, something with a stronger sense of purpose. She lands a role in public relations for a family violence legal service. It’s the kind of job that can completely change the way you see the world – and it will.
Writer Anna Barnes won STC’s Patrick White Playwrights’ Award in 2010. Her new play, Lethal Indifference, is based on real events and her own experiences. The stunning tale is told through a single actor, Emily Barclay (ABC’s Please Like Me), who brings to life a series of overlapping and interrelated chapters, full of drama, rich humour and deeply moving revelations.
Lethal Indifference is many things at once: the tale of a young woman’s growing awareness; a meditation on society’s complicity in domestic violence; and a captivating, finally tragic, story of another woman’s fight to survive.

Arturo Ui is a small-time gangster with a lust for power. In a city shaken by economic crisis and undermined by corruption, Ui keeps rising and rising until he reaches the very top. When he gets there, he won’t be breaking the law, he’ll be making it.
Hugo Weaving returns to STC in this powerhouse role. Written in 1941 as a cautionary satire on the rise of Hitler, Bertolt Brecht’s play is both thrillingly sharp and riotously funny. Set in 1930s Chicago, it has the wit, murder and musicality of a gangster movie while asking a very political question – how do we let a man like that come to power?
Artistic Director Kip Williams brings a bold, visually inventive vision to this great play. Sex and the millennial city
Natalie Yang has just published her memoir, Banana Girl, a sexually explicit look at life as a twenty-something woman in millennial Australia. It isn’t the heart-warming migrant story that people expected. Nor is it a feminist call to arms. And it certainly isn’t on the best-seller lists.
Going Down is the first full-length play for STC by Michele Lee, winner of the 2016 Queensland Premier’s Drama Award for her play Rice. Co-produced with Malthouse Theatre, it’s a brutally funny and frank examination of flawed characters failing at life in the most outrageous ways possible.
Natalie, for one, has washed up on the shores of anonymity. But she isn’t going to wallow in existential crisis, she’s going to double down. Her next book, 100 Cocks in 100 Nights, could be the scandalous reboot her career needs. Or it could be a complete disaster. Only when she hits rock bottom, will she find a way back up.

Every day was a challenge, and every challenge took its toll. In 2012, aged 56, McGregor faced a turning point: end her life, or transition as a woman.
Drawn directly from countless hours of interviews with McGregor, Still Point Turning tells her story in her own words. It reveals a woman of fierce intellect, passion, incisive humour and profound feeling. It celebrates her tenacity without shying away from her faults. It is the true story of her true self.

Somewhere in the Australian bush, mild-mannered archaeologist Dr Jacqueline Brown is conducting a survey on a site intended for the new factory of a shadowy corporation. She’s under pressure to provide the all-clear, but when her dig uncovers a mass grave, she picks up a skull and is immediately over-powered by the spirit of her Aboriginal great-great-grandmother. Blackie Blackie Brown, cold-blooded vigilante, is born.
In a no-holds-barred gore-fest, she’s going to kill all the descendants of the men who massacred her ancestors. White people, watch out. You could be one of them.
Paying homage to blaxploitation movies, Blackie Blackie Brown features the work of Barkindji, Birri-Gubba illustrator Emily Johnson and animations by visual effects whiz-kids Oh Yeah Wow. Nakkiah Lui’s script matches perfectly the lo-fi, hi-camp style of director Declan Greene (Sisters Grimm’s Calpurnia Descending).
With break-out newcomer Megan Wilding in the title role, and the ever-hilarious Ash Flanders playing every white person she needs to kill, this two-hander is a wild ride that will have you laughing out loud while squirming in your seat.

The fight of her life
A common girl with uncommon conviction, Joan of Arc has stood as an icon of protest throughout the ages.
Her faith and her visions, which inspired an entire army to victory, were both her greatest strength and her downfall. Burned at the stake as a heretic at the age of 19 and later canonised, her story has been re-written and co-opted in every generation by writers, theologians, film-makers and artists.
George Bernard Shaw’s dynamic classic play, written in 1923, three years after Joan’s canonisation, was a key factor in his receiving the Nobel Prize in 1925. Based on records of her trial, it follows the true story of Joan’s life as she fights – first for her country, then for her life. Taking us from battle field to court room, Shaw’s text is thrillingly alive with political machinations, moral questions and the fatal betrayal that made Joan an icon.
In the role, we welcome back the extraordinary Yael Stone (Netflix’s Orange is the New Black) together with a distinguished ensemble of actors including John Gaden (Orlando) and Socratis Otto (Foxtel’s Wentworth) playing the men who follow Joan and then destroy her. Resident director Imara Savage will foreground Shaw’s text in a stripped-back, modernist production.

The great Ruth Cracknell once described novelist Ruth Park as “that steady glow at the heart of Australian literature”. Now, celebrated playwright Kate Mulvany brings to the stage Park’s revered trilogy – Missus, The Harp in the South and Poor Man’s Orange.
This epic stage adaptation spreads Park’s beloved stories across two equally ambitious plays, The Harp in the South: Part One and The Harp in the South: Part Two. The two parts stand alone, but together they offer over five hours of unforgettable, exuberant theatre.
It’s a moving family saga and a celebration of Sydney in all its funny, gritty glory.
First appearing in 1947, Ruth Park’s trilogy brought to life a carnival of characters. Full of humour, romance and spirited rebellion, it captured our city’s best and worst features with a riveting, unflinching and endearing honesty.
It traces the lives of the Darcy family over the course of thirty years. Living at twelve-and-a-half Plymouth Street, Surry Hills, they grow up and grow old amidst brothels and sly grog, the pious and the violent, the opportunists and the desperate.
Artistic Director Kip Williams brings together an ensemble of 18 actors, including Tony Cogin, Anita Hegh, Tara Morice, Rose Riley, Guy Simon, Helen Thomson and Contessa Treffone. It’s a work full of music and movement, with an original score by Iain Grandage (The Secret River) and a design from the stellar team that fashioned Chimerica in 2017.

The homes of Surry Hills’ poor are threatened by government plans for redevelopment. At twelve-and-a-half Plymouth Street, four generations of the Darcy clan share their narrow terrace home. Beset by tragedy and loss, they struggle on, lucky to survive, ever hopeful in the face of adversity.

Written by Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo in 1970, this farce with a political sting in its tail has become an absurdist classic. In a first for this play, director Sarah Giles has amped up the energy with an all-female cast led by some of the country’s funniest comedians. This is a smart and subversive new adaptation, created by Giles with co-adaptor Francis Greenslade (ABC’s Mad as Hell).
It’s a glorious battle of the individual against the establishment, of underdog against overlord, of anarchy against tyranny. Patrick White, the only Australian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, is a towering figure in our culture. Of his plays, A Cheery Soul was White’s own favourite. It’s a fascinating work, mixing a satirical view of Australian society with an expressionistic form, poetic language and characters that are as hilarious and grotesque as they are uncannily familiar.
Returning to his imagined every-suburb of Sarsaparilla, White introduces us to one of his most memorable characters, Miss Docker, who embodies what the writer termed “the destructive power of good.” The prototypical Aussie busy-body, Miss Docker’s story leads her in a series of increasingly surreal acts from the home of the Custances, to the local nursing home, the church, and finally to the isolated grounds of the crematorium. White’s acidic insights into the nation’s soul are as funny and telling now as they were upon the play’s debut in 1963.
A Cheery Soul has a storied past at STC, with acclaimed productions in 1979 (directed by Jim Sharman) and 2001 (directed by Neil Armfield), both starring Robyn Nevin in a role she made famous. In 2018, our Artistic Director Kip Williams takes the helm, placing the magnificent Sarah Peirse (Switzerland) into Miss Docker’s fiercely sensible shoes in a bold, new production for the 21st century.

MAKING A GREAT BUILDING BETTERSince The Wharf opened in 1984, visiting Sydney Theatre Company has been a unique Sydney experience. Over that time, STC has grown, times have changed, and The Wharf is bearing decades of wear and tear.
In 2018, we will embark on our Wharf Renewal Project to make much-needed improvements to the audience facilities and theatre-making spaces. This will be the first major upgrade of The Wharf in 33 years.
The Wharf Renewal Project will make this incredible building better. Much thought and care has gone into the planning to ensure that our beloved Wharf retains its character, charm and essential “wharfiness.”
At its heart, the Project will look for ways to further enhance the beautiful heritage features, while providing better accessibility, more comfortable and efficient work spaces for our artists, crafts people and staff, modernised theatres and a more comfortable theatre experience for you, our audience.
Four plays will be presented in Wharf 1 and Wharf 2 Theatres next year, and then The Wharf will temporarily close for renovation midway through 2018.

SUPPORTING ARTISTS AND DEVELOPING NEW WORKSTC has a proud heritage as a creative hub for theatre-making. We offer programs, awards, fellowships and residencies that foster artists’ professional development and the creation of new Australian plays.
Our Resident Director, Resident Designer and Richard Wherrett Fellow work on productions in our season, as well as playing key roles in the day-to-day artistic life of the Company. We support and celebrate playwrights and new writing with the Patrick White Playwrights’ Award and Fellowship. The STC Emerging Writers’ Group is a new initiative aiming to support the professional development of emerging playwrights.
Our Rough Drafts program gives writers and theatre-makers the time, space and people to explore the theatrical potential of a new stage work, culminating in a free public showing (see pg 11). In 2018, Lethal Indifference, The Long Forgotten Dream and Still Point Turning: The Catherine McGregor Story were developed through Rough Drafts.
