The North Barrier Branch, of which Sarina is affiliated, recently held its Awards Presentation Night and celebrated its 80th anniversary in Townsville. Other cubs that make up the Branch include Eimeo, Mackay, Ayr, Bowen, Picnic Bay and Arcadia in Townsville along with Forrest Beach at Ingham.

Sarina came home with a ute full of awards that recognised the commitment and quality work that the clubs members put in. In the coveted Life Saver Awards we took out the under 14 age with Will Muscat, the 18-25 years with Nicola Street and the Senior Life Saver award belong to Daves Ronald. Still on the volunteer patrolling side the club also took out Champion Patrolling Club, which is a reflection of the professional service that our patrolling members bring to the beach from September to April each year.

Tyler Kerr took out the Branch Junior Athlete of the Year, Julie McLucas was awarded the Rookie Official of the Year, Megan Graham Rookie Coach of the Year and Dave Young took out the Trainer of the Year for the great work he does not just at our club but other clubs within the branch too.

When it came to the overall club we couldn’t be prouder after taking out two prestigious awards for Youth Development Club and the Overall Club of the Year. These truly are awards that all the club’s members help us achieve.

Most of these awards go on to the SLSQ State Awards night. Although we didn’t take out the big one, SLSQ for the first time awarded a Club of the Year Commendation Award which we took out. It truly is a great achievement and one the club’s members can be very proud of.

A huge congratulations to Doris Ahern who was made a Life Member of the Club recently and to her husband Tony who gained his 25 year membership pin.

If anyone is looking to join Surf Life Saving as a Patrol Member, have their kids enjoy our junior Nipper program, or participate in a club that welcomes the whole family, the season starts in September. You can contact the club by e-mail at [email protected].

A very dedicated and enthusiastic Cowboys fan was extremely surprised to receive a call recently, telling her that she had won a fully autographed, framed, North Queensland Toyota Cowboys jersey.

The winner, Ms Jodie Bonney, of Sarina, said taking delivery of the prize was a very exciting moment for her.

“I am a self-confessed Cowboys tragic who hardly ever misses watching a game. I have the perfect place to hang this prize,” she said.

The raffle, run by The Sarina District Schools Chaplaincy Committee, is an annual fundraiser in Sarina. Committee Chair, Mr Rod Ballard said this raffle is always very well supported by the community and the funds raised are invaluable in keeping the Chaplaincy services going in all our district schools.

“A big thank you must go to Mackay Toyota Auto Corner for donating the jersey,” he said. Without their generous support, such a fundraiser would not be possible.

Mr Ballard went on to say that the work of ticket sellers and the very generous support of the wider community who purchased tickets, had to be acknowledged as well.

“These funds will go towards providing much needed resources and training for our Chaplains in the local area,” he said.
