Mahastangar:
The ancient name of Mahastangar is Pundranagara. What we now see in
Mahastangar are the ruined citadel or fortified part of Pundranagara, and a few-
Buddhist structures around that citadel. Citadel was made as a fortress or a
castle protecting a town or a city. People can take shelter in it during war or
danger.
It is said that the Pundranagara civilization belongs to 3rd-4th
century BC. In the beginning of 6th century BC Gautama Buddha
visited Pundranagara and spent six months in that city. It proves
that the city is much older than it is said. The findings of
excavations have revealed that the Pundranagara Civilization is
as old as the Mohenjodaro, Harappa Civilization.
The area of the citadel of Mahasthangar is about 2 sq. miles, 4 and half meters or
15 feet above the surrounding land. The extension of the semi-.circled suburbs of
the city was 5 mile in radius from the citadel. We can easily imagine how vast the
city was.
Paharpur Mahavihara: Paharpur Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in the world.
In Paharpur a single monastery with a central shrine covers 11 hectares of land,
so it is said to be the largest monastery in the world. The Paharpur Monastery is
now a World Heritage declared by the UNESCO in 1985. The Monastery was
built during the later half of the 8th century AD, on a site of a Jain monastery of
5th Century AD, by a Bengali monarch, Dharmapala, who was a Buddhist by
faith.
The quadrangular Paharpur Monastery measures 922 feet north-South and 919
feet east-west. It was a multistoried monastery, having 177 monastic cells in
17
each floor. The thickness of the enclosure wall is 1166 feet. The central temple of
the monastery is 72 feet high in its present ruined state.
Kantel Temple:
The most ornate among the late medieval Hindu temples of Bangladesh is
situated near Denajpur town. It was built by Maharaja Pran Nath in 1752 A. D.
Every inch of the temple surface is beautifully embellished with exquisite
terracotta plaques, representing flora and fauna, geometric motifs, mythological
scenes and an astonishing array of contemporary social scenes and favorite past
time. Tire Maharaja's palace with relics of the past centuries and local museum
are worth a visit.

sound political environment is much more important here.
Hotel industry growth and promotion of truism business both are
interrelated. Sound political practices can ensure these two.
Good political practices ensure good governances and good governance
always come up with a set of long and short term effective and efficient
policies, which is very required for industrial growth. For Bangladeshi hotel
industry growth we also need some good multidimensional policies.
Now a day’s Bangladeshi unstable political practice and lack of social
security, growth of terrorism are few great concerns for the western world.
Which has a direct impact on the tourist and visitors and obviously on
hotel industry.
Economical:
Healthy economy and government support are needed for every business growth of a country and hotel business in not an exception case here.
As Bangladesh is very beautiful for its natural and cultural aspects so that’s why hotel is
As the hotel business is very capital intensive so that lots of cash flow is required her. And only good economy can effort that.
For the growth of hotel business good country infrastructure is must, and to
ensure that good economy is needed. So in hotel business if we ensure the
economic factors properly then it will hope a large return from this sector.
45

The BCG Growth-Share Matrix
It is based on the observation that a company's business units can be classified
into four categories based on combinations of market growth and market share
relative to the largest competitor, hence the name "growth-share". Market growth
serves as a proxy for industry attractiveness, and relative market share serves as
a proxy for competitive advantage. The growth-share matrix thus maps the
business unit positions within these two important determinants of profitability.
BCG Growth-Share Matrix
This framework has prepared on the basis of some Bangladeshi Hotel such as
Hotel Saraton, Hotel Sonargoan, Hotel radison, Hotel Westin, Hotel Regency,
Hotel Sarina, Hotel Sweet Dream and others.
The four categories are:
o Dogs –Hotel Sweet Dream and others Bangladeshi hotel have low market
share and a low growth rate and thus neither generate nor consume a
large amount of cash. As a result, they have been categoried in Dogs.
47
o Question marks – Hotel Regency and Hotel Sarina are growing rapidly
and thus consume large amounts of cash, but because they have low
market shares they do not generate much cash. The result is a large net
cash comsumption. Hotel Regency and Hotel Sarina have the potential to
gain market share and become a star, and eventually a cash cow when
the market growth slows. If those hotel do not succeed in becoming the
market leader, then after perhaps years of cash consumption it will
degenerate into a dog when the market growth declines. They must be
analyzed carefully in order to determine whether they are worth the
investment required to grow market share.
o Stars - Hotel radison and hotel Westin are currenty staying in stars,
because those generate large amounts of cash because of their strong
relative market share, but also consume large amounts of cash because
of their high growth rate; therefore the cash in each direction
approximately nets out
o Cash cows - As leaders in a mature market, Hotel Saraton and Hotel
Sonargoan exhibit a return on assets that is greater than the market
growth rate, and thus generate more cash than they consume. Such
business units should be "milked", extracting the profits and investing as
little cash as possible
