DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know honey bees dont hibernate? The bees form awinter cluster. This ball of bees is formed when temperatures arebelow 57 degrees fahrenheit, and it expands and contracts as theoutside temperatures rise and fall. The bees keep the center of thecluster about 90 degrees fahrenheit. The queen stays in the centerand lays eggs. The bees generate heat by shivering their wingmuscles. As the bees on the outside of the cluster become chilled, they move toward the center for warmth. The clus ter of bees moves
about the hive eating their stores of honey. Thats where the caloriescome from to create the energy to shiver. If you see a beehive, andthe outside temperature is above 50, you might even see bees flyingabout. The bees love the January thaw so they can run to the outhouse!Their outhouse is the great outdoors. The bees actually leave thehive on a warm winter day for what is calleda cleansing flight. They dont defecate inthe hive. Bees are very clean! The above information comes to uscourtesy of Betterbee in Greenwich, NewYork. Visit them for all the information
you may want concerni ng honey bees .They have a wealth of knowledge andexperience!
NEW YORK STATE ASSOCIATION OF AGRICULTURAL FAIRS ELECTS R. HARRYBOOTH as 2014 President of the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs. Boothspresidency was confirmed at the NYSAAF annual convention held at the Rochester ConventionCenter, in January. The NYSAAFs mission is to promote and encourage agriculture, horticultureand the domestic arts through annual fairs of member organizations; to further interest in the mate-rial and educational development of agriculture and industry in the State of New York; to encourageand assist in the development and improvement of fairs and expositions; and to foster a spirit ofcooperation among its members and to exchange ideas on management and areas of general inter-est.
In a letter to the association, Booth writes, I am excited and encouraged as I begin my term toserve you as President of our state organization. I encourage everyone to seek out new andinnovative ways to promote agriculture at your fairs. The state convention is one of the best oppor-tunities any of us have to network, to teach, and to learn, different ideas and different approaches. Most importantly; do it with a passion.R. Harry Booth began his participation in the Washington County Fair as a child exhibiting hisfarms produce and livestock.
