Do You remember James E West, the founder of TV Dataand resident of Queensbury?Well, his grandson is on the USA Luge Team. 18-year-old

Tucker West is the youngestever member of the U.S.Olympic luge team and one of three lugers to be representingthe U.S. in mens singles. InNovember West was part of theU.S. relay team that won asilver medal at the WinterbergWorld Cup.Many kids practice their buzzer

beater jump shots against animaginary opponent in their backyard. Growing up, Tucker Westplayed out his dreams in his Ridgefield, Conn. backyard. Buthis vision of athletic glory involved flying down a sheet of ice.The 18-year-old slider is competing in Sochi.Ive always been a bit of a luge nerd since I first watched thesport in 2002, said West.And thats where it all began. While watching the luge compe-tition during the Salt Lake Olympics, Tuckers father, BrettWest, said to his seven-year-old son, That looks like a lot of fun. Is that something youd like to do?The two were so enamored with the sport that they decided tobuild a luge track in the backyard of their home in the quaintNew England town of Ridgefield. It started with a snow trackthat they iced down, but it would always melt away. Eventu-ally it evolved into a wooden monstrosity. I got obsessed withit. Any free time I would be out here building this stupid con-traption. It was a bit like Noahs Ark, Brett West said.This is no amateur structure. The wooden track runs 750 feetand is the only luge track, along with Sochis, to include anuphill section. It features a PA system, weather station, elec-tric timing, an automatic icing spray system and lights for night-time runs. Its even fully certified by the state of Connecticut.The track took about a year to complete after a lot of hardwork and endless trips to Home Depot.I lost my mind. I got so fixated. Literally tens of thousands of screws. For every 15 screws I got in, he [Tucker] put one in,said Brett. All the long hours proved to be worth it when Tuckertook his first run down the homemade course, beaming fromear to ear. Luge became his lifes mission from that momenton, never settling for less than his best.We used to clock everyones times. I would always have thetop time because it was my track. One time one of the guysbeat it. I could not stand for that. I couldnt fathom that. So Iwent up 10 more times and, eventually, I finally beat it ."Tucker's father began to prepare Tucker for the world stageby sitting on the track and announcing his runs over the PAsystem, pretending it was the Olympics. Every two years whenthe Olympics were on TV, I would watch them from the Open-ing Ceremony to the Closing Ceremony, every minute of it. Ialways dreamed of winning a gold medal or just being at theGames, said Tucker. His dream started to take shape whenthe marketing director of USA Luge, Gordy Sheer, heard aboutthe backyard luge track and showed up at the Wests homewith his Olympic medal from the 1998 Nagano Games. Sheerinvited West to take a trip up to Lake Placid, N.Y. and try outa real track.Ill never forget how excited Tucker was. Its like going froma car with no shocks to a car with the worlds best shocks. Ihad never seen him so excited, so jazzed. He was exploding,said Brett.Tucker trained with the Adirondack Luge Club for two yearsbefore the Sliders Search, USA Luges recruitment tour, cameto Ridgefield and offered him a spot on their Junior Develop-ment Team. By 9th grade, Tucker left his friends and family inConnecticut and moved to Lake Placid to att end the NationalSports Academy. He's continued to make his way through theteam rankings and now to the Olympic Games.He wouldnt be in the Olympics if not for this track, said

USA Luge knew Tucker as the boy with the track in thebackyard -- its what really opened their eyes to him.The track hasnt been used in the five year s since Tucker hasbeen training in Lake Placid and his sisters, Tatum and Gracie,have very little interest in the sport. Only 380 feet of the courseremain, but Brett has plans for the tracks future.Theres been others in the family, I wont name names, whosuggested it should come downIm already thinking aheadto my grandkids. There may be a version 2.0.Tucker is hoping to take a few more runs on the backyardcourse once hes not busy training for t he Olympics and jug-gling school. He is currently the only slider on the team who isattending a college campus, rather than taking online classes.Im going into my freshman year after the Games at UnionCollege, which is on a trimester calendar and works well withmy training schedule. Ill be able to go to school for one se-mester a year. It will take a while to graduate, he joked.With the West family traveling to Sochi to cheer him on, Tuckerhopes that his childhood dreams become a reality. The odds of a Connecticut boy reaching the Olympics from a backyard

start were slim, but anything is possible if you are dedicated toyour goals, s ays Tucker.Everyone has a dream. But its going to stay a dream unlessyou act upon it. Im excited to represent Team USA and Ihope I can make them proud.
