In BC, Capital Power operates four small hydro facilities, the 275 MW natural gas-fired Island Generation facility on Vancouver Island and one of North America’s largest biomass facilities in Williams Lake.

Quality Wind Project description
Approximately 142 megawatt (MW) project near Highway 52
Vestas will supply and commission 79 1.8 MW wind turbines – 44 model V100 and 35 model V90
Limited environmental impacts – half of the project area has previous impacts from oil/gas activity, forestry logging, roads and a forest fire
Includes project substation and a 230 kV, 22 km overhead transmission line to Tumbler Ridge substation
Commercial operation anticipated by late 2012

Quarterly reports submitted to B.C. Environmental Assessment Office
Consulting firms ensure adherence to regulations: Hemmera (Environment), AMEC Arcas (Archeology), TECO (Forestry)
Traditional land use (TLU) and ecological knowledge (TEK) sites identified during EA process and incorporated into project design; steps taken to avoid these highly valued sites
Additional mitigation for road embankments, watercourse and wetland setbacks, use of existing roads and trails (to reduce footprint), and construction scheduled during “least risk” timing windows for wildlife
Palaeontological / archeological “chance encounter” procedures in place

Health & Safety
Frequent communication with Tumbler Ridge Council, RCMP and Fire Department, STARS (for emergency helicopter transport), local health care professionals and local recreational clubs (e.g. snowmobile club)
On-site EH&S Coordinator for both Capital Power and Mortenson
Attend safety meetings; provide recommendations to prime and sub-contractors
Perform inspections on all equipment / crew before entering and leaving the site (both from Environmental and Safety perspective)
Regularly monitor site for safety issues (e.g. PPE adherence)
Site visitor communication procedure in place
First drill of the Emergency Response Plan had very good results
Emergency response officials have expressed gratitude for early engagement in the process
