Maria Phalime is a medical doctor, award-winning author, speaker and business coach who believes that performance and well-being go hand-in-hand. Maria was born and raised in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, later moving to Cape Town to attend the University of Cape Town, where she graduated with degrees in Science and Medicine. After graduating she began practicing as a Junior Doctor, fulfilling her childhood dream. It was during this time of long hours, heavy patient loads and minimal supervision that she realised that the way medical students are trained and doctors’ work is unsustainable and detrimental to their health and well-being.
In 2004 Maria chose to leave clinical practice and write about her journey in the award-winning memoir titled “Postmortem – The Doctor Who Walked Away”. She has reinvented herself as a successful author of both fiction and non-fiction works, inspirational speaker, leadership development facilitator and coach. Her sessions empower audiences to face adversity head on and to use challenges as stepping stones to success.
