Portrait Of Beauty
Nicole Kidman lends her outstanding talent and presence to the Planet
Ocean ‘Jewelry’ timepieces – technical wonders designed as much for deep sea exploration as red-carpet appearances. By Avril Groom. Photograph by Camilla Åkrans.
When one of the world’s most stylish women falls in love with a particular watch model, then you know this design is truly something special. Actress Nicole Kidman, one of People magazine’s fifty most beautiful people in the world and a stunning ambassador for Omega watches, was so enamored of the new Planet Ocean ‘Jewelry’ Co-Axial chronograph when wearing it for a recent shoot that she didn’t want to take it off afterwards. But that was just the prototype, and now she is keenly awaiting the delivery of one of the first examples of this fabulous new model.
The Planet Ocean ‘Jewelry’ Co-Axial chronograph and chronometers take Omega in more than one exciting new direction. Part of the Seamaster family, they are fully functional diver’s watches with all of the technical prowess implied by Omega’s experience making diver’s watches since the 1940s, including water resistance to 600 meters (2000 feet), a unidirectional rotating bezel and a helium-release valve to reduce the pressure. But they are also luxuriantly diamond-set, with painstaking craft worthy of the best Jewelry watches. They look immensely suave and sophisticated at the most glamorous of evening events, worn on the cuff of a dress shirt or with a gorgeous gown.
For, as befits a watch which transcends so many limits, the Planet Ocean ‘Jewelry’ watch was designed with neither men nor women specifically in mind but is for anyone taken by its fancy.
Omega’s designers have set out to make a watch that truly breaks boundaries. It is a top quality diver’s watch that will probably never be used for diving, but is a stunning talking point, a watch to be seen in. This is helping to set a new trend of diver’s watches as Jewelry, an area where only a few watch companies have gone but more will surely follow. Nowadays people don’t ask whether a watch is designed for a man or a woman. In 2004, when the Seamaster Planet Ocean range was first launched, its large sizes – 45.5 mm and 42 mm – seemed very masculine, but now women love large-sized watches. So the new model can appeal equally to a woman who wants a large, glamorous watch, or to the increasing number of men who want diamond watches.
At the original Seamaster Planet Ocean 2004 launch, the watch was featured in steel with a black or orange bezel. The latter became a

cult model, setting a color trend for sports watches that still persists.
The Seamaster Planet Ocean ‘Jewelry’ Collection represents a radical departure, one which has an equally bright future. There are two models, both with Omega’s legendary Co-Axial escapement, self-winding movements and COSC certification. Both have a brushed stainless steel case and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that is anti-reflective on both sides. And both feature a screw-in caseback stamped with the Seahorse medallion. The dials are lacquered
black with applied Arabic numerals. They feature the Omega name and logo and indexes and hands coated with white Super-LumiNova. The integrated black alligator strap is fitted with a polished stainless steel fold-over clasp.
The chronograph, at 45.5 mm, has a sporty air, despite its bezel of 45 sizeable diamonds totalling 2.65 carats. It has a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute recorder at 3 and a 12-hour recorder at 6, with a small date window at 4:30. The sleek, elegant chronometer comes in 45.5 mm

and 42 mm diameters, the latter with 45 slightly smaller diamonds totalling 1.73 carats. All models have a black triangular dive minute marker with white Super-LumiNova dot, at 12 o’clock.
The Planet Ocean ‘Jewelry’ is not only one of Omega’s most striking and original timepieces, but also one of their most versatile and innovative models.
NICOLE KIDMAN
That one of Hollywood’s most respected and talented actresses has accepted the call to become a Brand Ambassador for Omega is a testament to the watches’ quality and beauty. The tall, slender Australian has a powerful screen image that has a great synergy with Omega’s iconic style.
She has been working with the
company for four years, appearing in Omega advertising campaigns.
Nicole was born in Hawaii in 1967 while her distinguished medical researcher father was working there, so perhaps Hollywood was her natural eventual home, though she started as an actress in her native Sydney, starring with Sam Neill in the well-received Dead Calm (1989) and even, as a teenage actress, receiving praise from director Jane Campion, who later cast her in Portrait of a Lady (1996). She met her first husband, Tom Cruise, on the set of Days of Thunder (1990) but her US breakthrough role was in the comedy To Die For (1995).
She was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Moulin Rouge (2001) and received one as best actress for The Hours (2002) – the first Australian to do so. She also loves
appearing in art-house movies like Dogville, The Human Stain and Birth.
Nicole is the mother of two adopted children from her previous marriage with Tom Cruise. In 2006 she married country singer Keith Urban and recently had a daughter, Sunday Rose. She revels in being over forty, claiming that young actresses don’t have enough emotional baggage to be convincing. -“There’s something very beautiful about being a mature woman”, she has said.

Nautilus for Ladies
After the extremely successful relaunch of the Nautilus men’s
collection in the fall of 2006, the Geneva workshops are finally presenting the new Nautilus ladies’ line. Its new models exhibit the same technical modifications and retouched design elements as the men’s watches, but in a size and with stylistic refinements that add irresistible feminine charm to the innate casual elegance of the Nautilus collection.
The new ladies’ Nautilus models are available in white or rose gold with precious diamonds (Ref. 7010/1) or with a satin-finished bezel (Ref. 7011/1).

Launched in 1976, the Nautilus became a wildly popular “enfant terrible” in the category of casually elegant watches, setting itself apart with an unconventional porthole-inspired design and a rounded octagonal bezel. Introduced in 1981, the Ref. 3800 midsize model with the 37.5-mm case was soon seen more and more frequently on feminine wrists as well, so a year later, Patek Philippe presented the Ref. 4700, a 28.5-mm version styled explicitly for ladies. Thus, it is only natural that the successful redesign of the men’s Nautilus on the occasion of the collection’s 30-year anniversary in the fall of 2006 is now being followed by a completely new ladies’ Nautilus line. It interprets the technical and stylistic evolution of the prominent men’s watch with feminine aplomb.
Casual elegance in 18K gold
The new ladies’ Nautilus comes exclusively in 18K white or rose gold. The three-part case, now with a diameter of 32 mm, is one of its new features, offering the same legendary ruggedness as the original monocoque; it is water-resistant to 60 meters. The ingenious porthole mechanism of the Nautilus case that firmly secures the bezel on the caseband remains unchanged. But the previously straight hinges are now gently rounded as in the new men’s Nautilus models,

following the curvature of the bezel. This evolution in design and harmony produces a new level of timeless elegance.
The bracelet was also refined and reproportioned to complement the latest case formats. It seamlessly extends the contour of the case and gradually tapers into a fold-over clasp that assures a comfortable yet secure fit.
Thanks to a new finish, the bracelet now feels even softer. As in the original version, the outer links feature a glowing matt satin finish while the center links are polished to a brilliant sheen.
Feminine luster: with or without diamonds
The new Nautilus ladies’ models in white or rose gold are available in versions with or without diamonds. The bezel of the Ref. 7011/1 without diamonds projects the traditional Nautilus look with a vertical satin finish on the top side and mirror-polished flanks. The same matt/shine contrast is repeated on the case flank, the lugs, and the bracelet. In place of the satin finish, the bezel of the Ref. 7010/1 exhibits a scintillating wreath of 46 flawless Top Wesselton round diamonds totaling about 0.73 ct. They reflect

sunshine - or the limelight - with incomparable fire.
Whether in silvery white or charcoal gray, the dials are styled to radiate casual elegance. Framed by a discreet minute scale, the center is embossed with the horizontal signature pattern of the Nautilus collection. The periphery is formed by 10 baton hour markers as well as the Arabic numeral 12; all of these 18K gold appliques have a luminescent coating for excellent legibility even in total darkness. Striking signature elements, the new, slightly widened baton-style hour and minute hands were designed expressly for the ladies’ Nautilus. The watch also has a sweep seconds hand and an aperture date at 3 o’clock.
Casual elegance with quartz precision
Patek Philippe’s new Nautilus for ladies is powered by the caliber E 23 SC quartz movement. This manufacture movement is crafted
in the workshops in Geneva; its mechanical parts, such as wheels, arbors, and levers, are made with the same dedication to care lavished on the mechanical movements signed by Patek Philippe. With its gentle redesign, distinctive silhouette in precious yet resilient gold versions, and choice of bezels with a suave satin finish or glistening diamonds, Patek Philippe’s reworked Nautilus for ladies establishes a new norm that will endure for generations. It represents a model of casual elegance and feminine panache that will endure for generations.
To accent the launch of the new Nautilus collection for ladies, Patek Philippe also created two finger rings inspired by the design of the Nautilus’ octagonal bezel.
One ring is set with 60, the other with 48 flawless Top Wesselton diamonds. Both rings are available in white or rose gold.To underscore their alliance with the collection, they display an engraved “Patek Philippe Nautilus” inscription.
The launch of the new ladies’ Nautilus collection begins this spring and will be supported by a worldwide campaign introducing a new ad as part of the ongoing global “Begin an enduring love affair” ladies’ campaign. The new campaign positions the world famous ladies’ Nautilus as the quintessential casually elegant watch for every day. In a visual captured by globally acclaimed fashion photographer Michael Thompson, the ad features a confident, elegant woman on a speeding yacht, a metaphorical reference to water as the realm of the Nautilus.

PREMIUM I WATCHES
The first manned lunar landing on the 20th of July, 1969 was the
greatest, most dramatic scientific achievement in human history. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the moon’s surface at 02:56 GMT on the 21st of July, Aldrin was wearing his OMEGA Speedmaster and a legend was born. An interesting footnote: the electronic timing system on the Lunar Module was not functioning correctly so Armstrong had left his watch aboard as a reliable backup.
The very first chronographs were equipped with a hand that actually placed a drop of ink on the dial, thus providing a material indication of the measured time.
Later on, daring drivers and bold athletes adopted them as indispensable instruments for measuring their accomplishments.
Today, the chronograph represents far more than just a valuable professional tool. If people were asked to quote just one single complication among mechanical watches, the chronograph would doubtless be mentioned.
This function is riding an unbroken wave of enthusiasm. Whether for calculating a 100-metre sprint or a Formula 1 race, it expresses sporting excellence imbued with passion and precision.
What if it also served to “give” us time instead of taking it away from us? And if it enabled us to fully appreciate each second of the time at our disposal.
This wishful thinking springs to vivid life in the Jules Audemars selfwinding chronograph, an

eloquent symbol of time regained.
Pervaded by the characteristic free-spirited attitude of contemporary design, the style of the dial is inspired by the past and allows us to relive an entire era.
The numerals conducive to optimal readability; the elegant leaf-shaped hands; the chronograph seconds hand featuring a hollowed counterweight; the minute track with its red indications surrounded by a tachometric scale; the presence of two horizontally aligned small seconds and 30-minute counters; the entire range of details are arranged with infinite subtlety and elegance.
Instead of the white dial matched with a pink gold case and brown crocodile leather strap, retro enthusiasts will be tempted to
opt for the model combining an eggshell-colored dial with a white gold case and black crocodile leather strap.
In both cases, the sapphire crystal serves to admire both the movement and the finishing, including the particular care lavished on the gold oscillating weight.
Proudly bearing the family crests of the Audemars Piguet families, the latter adds a truly distinguished signature touch to this exclusive movement.

Reverso Squadra Ladya multi-faceted feminine universe
Two years after the advent of the Reverso Squadra for men, Jaeger-
LeCoultre presents a collection dedicated to women. The boldly determined appearance of the Reverso Squadra Lady reflects a multi-faceted feminine universe: two faces, a fast and clever strap-change system, a stunning array of materials, a classic design and the sparkle of diamonds. Equipped with the latest generation of Jaeger-LeCoultre movements, these models combine the signature Reverso Squadra features with a degree of refinement reserved exclusively for feminine wrists.
Reverso Squadra Lady – the many faces of an obvious choice
Jaeger-LeCoultre wanted to offer women a Reverso Squadra collection embodying the fundamentals of the iconic Reverso and its unique swivel, while also bearing the distinctive characteristics of the Reverso Squadra line: a square case and resolute character, along with a powerful and immediately

recognizable design.Designers, watchmakers and engineers set to work on creating a line perfectly tailored to the specific demands of women fully prepared to use masculine “weapons of mass seduction”.
Nonetheless, they soon realized that a single model could barely hope to satisfy such a broad spectrum of expectations. This naturally led to the decision to offer two lines with two case sizes:a small size intended to delicately but firmly match the typical feminine way of wearing a watch; and a more generously proportioned model that will appeal to women wishing to sport a watch that catches the eye at first glance.
The aesthetics of the Reverso Squadra Lady dial are imbued with a rich diversity: straight transferred numerals standing out against a silver-colored dial base in order to preserve the sporting sprit of the Reverso Squadra; or numerals with an original geometry, set against a sunburst guilloché motif and underscored by two rows of diamonds allying a taste for performance with the secret aspirations of the feminine heart, driven by the conviction that only the sparkle of stones is worthy to illuminate the passing of time.
And since the Grande Maison in the Vallée de Joux wishes to provide women fascinated by the Reverso Squadra with a comprehensive range of refined models, each version comes in a broad variety of materials, featuring a number of variations on a theme in yellow gold, pink gold or steel, either polished or exquisitely adorned with diamonds.

Reverso Squadra Lady Duetto
Since each Reverso Squadra is first and foremost a swivel watch, how could the makers deprive the new collection of the fabulous Duetto concept, which simultaneously reveals two faces of time? The principle is the same as ever, with one face set with diamonds and featuring a date display and an exquisite day/night disc adorned with sun and star symbols. The back, which is devoted to a straightforward hour and minute display, also pays tribute to Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 968, through a discreet aperture in the centre of the dial that reveals the movement’s oscillating weight adorned with the “côtes soleillées” motif. Once again, Reverso Squadra enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice, since the new Duetto is available in steel with gem-setting on the back along with white and black dials, or in a pink gold version with gem-setting on both sides, along with white and black dials.

The innovative Reverso Squadra Lady is also distinguished by its novel interchangeable strap system. This clever device enables one to change strap in a flash without any tool whatsoever. Thus, when changing out of daywear

for a smarter evening look, it becomes as easy as anything to remove the practical articulated rubber strap and replace it with an elegant leather strap. This gesture will soon become as familiar to the lucky owner of a Reverso Squadra as swiveling the case to reveal the gem-set face, as the stars begin to twinkle in the sky above.
The pink gold version of the Reverso Squadra Lady Duetto associates the glowing precious metal with a black leather or rubber strap. On the steel version, white is the keynote for the leather straps, or white rubber strap.
In the other versions, yellow gold and steel are married with white leather or rubber. This vast array of choices, colours and materials gives rise to fascinating matches such as steel and diamonds or pink gold and leather, forming a whirling carousel of happy whims and fancies.
The Reverso Squadra is thus successfully interpreted in the feminine mode while betraying nothing of its masculine and sporting roots.
It is as practical as ever and well suited to life’s many circumstances thanks to its clarity, its reliability and its sturdiness. Indeed, choosing the Reverso Squadra betokens a bold determination to wear a sporting watch with a highly distinctive style as well as genuine technical and horological substance. Women now also speak men’s language. Their exclusive preserve remains a unique aura of elegance imbued with unmistakable refinement, but they now also share the masculine prerogatives of strength and boldness.

In 2004 Breguet launched a new interpretation of this product line, featuring a markedly more contemporary and sporty but ever elegant
design. Following the launch in 2007 of the first tourbillon-equipped chronograph with silicon escapement, this year brings a groundbreaking new design: the Marine Royale alarm watch, water-resistant to 300m.
Breguet’s Marine Royale 5847 comes with an alarm device that can only delight both amateur divers and aficionados of exceptional complications. Underwater tests confirm that sound travels better through water
than through air. Sound waves require material support and their speed increases with the density of the environment. Sound travels about four times faster under than above water. Furthermore, as the underwater milieu is generally far less noisy than the aerial one, the alarm’s sound is perceived with greater clarity underwater. The alarm setting crown and on-off pushpiece, in gold, are sheathed in rubber for easier handling, adding a further touch of sporty elegance. The watch naturally possesses the usual diver’s-watch features,

not least a one-way rotating bezel inscribed with a graduated 20-minute sector. The bezel’s unidirectional rotation is secured by a blocking pawl, visible and located between the two winding crowns on the case flank. Shaped like a wave, it recalls the watch’s essential functions. To improve its legibility even in the murkiest waters, its minute markers and hand along
with the hour hand are coated with white luminous superluminova while the hour and alarm markers glow blue. Represented by a blue triangular pointer at 10 o’clock, the power-reserve indicator is also luminous.Rounding out its attributes, the Marine Royale 5847 possesses a date indicator and a self-winding mechanism. The white gold version
comes with an 18 kt dial with black rhodium finish while the pink gold version features an 18 kt pink gold dial. Both are manually engine-turned with the collection’s dedicated wave pattern.

A Pleasing Sense of Time
The 38 mm polished stainless steel case is framed by a bezel ringed with 54 TW-if brilliant-cut diamonds (total weight approx. 1.17 ct), adding a touch of luxury to the Lady Serenade Chronograph. The sunburst decoration creates magnificently lustrous reflections on the black galvanized dial. Polished Roman numerals mark the 12 and 6 o’clock positions on the dial, while applied stainless steel markers illustrate the divisions of the other hours. Shining silver threads surround the minute counter at 9 o’clock and the running subsidiary seconds at 3 o’clock, highlighting them clearly on the dial. The crown is consciously playful, embellished as it is with a brilliant-cut diamond. The latest variation of the Lady Serenade Chronograph is a picture of suppleness with its cool, shining, patented stainless steel bracelet that feels especially pleasant on the wrist. ColoseoLuxury of detail
Luxury of detail - a potential motto for the new Coloseo.
The idea governing the new Coloseo is the association of opposites: a classical round shape spiced up with fine ingredients - lacquer, mother-of-pearl, diamonds and onyx.
Lacquer, firstly. The watch gains a strong identity from the small trapezoid partitioned off areas of enamelling spread across the bezel. The white lacquer illuminates the bezel with its finest reflections.
Then mother-of-pearl. It magnifies the refined design of the dial, with an “open” date aperture providing an elegant contrast.
Located at 3 o’clock, the diamonds form an original off-centre pavé which emphasises the unexpected design of the crown protector.Like icing on a cake, the crown is topped with black onyx for a perfect finish.
Different models of Coloseo are available: deep black or white mother-of-pearl dial, with or without inset diamonds, all on a leather or metal strap.

A memorable design journeyThe solid gold, rectangular case of the three new watches adopts the same ‘banana’ shape as their famous ancestor, now safely housed in the Tissot museum in Le Locle. It curves around the wrist, mirroring the soft contours. The Art Deco theme embraces both the lines of the watch and the design of the swirling numbers, with their varying size cleverly fitting them into the dimensions of the slim, rectangular dial. A historical Tissot logo on the dial and delicate bleuté hands add touches of romantic nostalgia. Ensuring the seal of modernity, the new Tissot Classic Prince contains a Swiss made 17-jewel mechanical movement and is water resistant to a depth of 30 metres (100 feet).
Variations on a classical themeThe Tissot Classic Prince Diamonds frames a silver-coloured dial with 165 diamonds of 1.08 carat Top Wesselton vvs quality. Completing the classical trio is a Tissot Classic Prince with a black dial with or without diamonds. All models are attached securely to the wrist by a genuine crocodile leather strap in an up-to-the-minute shade of chocolate brown and with a stylish folding buckle. A finely textured crown represents a common signature of elegance on the watches. The new timepieces magically recapture the mood of a bygone age, in family heirlooms of the future.

New Nautical Landmarks
Hamilton is taking its American Classic collection on an exciting
voyage with the brand new Seaview family of timepieces. The first two landmarks in this line of nautical themed watches are the Seaview AutoChrono and the Seaview GMT. The new model Seaview Automatic 46 mm will be launched in 2009.
These sophisticated watches get themselves on the map by means of intricate design detail and precision functionality. With a choice of materials, from edgy stainless steel to elegant pink gold plating, and colours, there is a watch to suit every situation, on land and at sea.
Seaview AutoChrono
The Seaview AutoChrono gives classic sophistication an appealing kick. This turns it into a hero of the present, with its roots in the past, mixing heritage with modernity.Sophistication clearly expresses itself through dials featuring a Côtes de Genève finish, simultaneously reminding of the watch’s nautical theme with their own small waves. The sporty character is strikingly evident in the turning bezel design with its embossed digits and markings
resembling the most famous navigational instrument, the compass. Around the bezel, 15-minute intervals, like those used for decompression calculation, are clearly marked. There are three models in the family, each with its own distinctive identity. A pink gold colored version is the flagship of the trio with its intrinsic elegance contrasted with a trendy black rubber strap. This textured black rubber strap can also be teamed with a silvercolored case and black dial, or, to highlight a more classical direction, replaced by a stainless-steel bracelet.
Seaview GMT
The Seaview GMT applies alternative functionality to this elegantly sporty timepiece with its facility to accommodate a second time zone. And since over 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by ocean, thiscapability is particularly useful to nautically-minded wearers. The GMT function looks like the historical ships’ telegraphs known as chadburns, where the ship’s direction and speed were revealed through a metal barrell surround. The predominantly black dials of the three GMT models present a circle of small windows through which the movement ETA 2893-2 makes regular appearances. A finely
tapered hand extends beyond this ring of cutouts to point to a square display revealing the hour of the selected second time zone on the 24-hour clock. The Seaview GMT is available in exactly the same color combinations as the trio of Seaview AutoChrono models. The Côtes de Genève ondulations enhance silver-colored windows forming two arcs centered on 12o’clock and 6 o’clock, one integrating the date window, returning the imagination to navigation with its strong resemblance to historical inclinometers, used to measure angles of elevation.
Seaview Automatic
The elegant simplicity of the brand new Seaview automatic 46 mm attracts the eye. The model impresses due to its size and the ingenious blend of materials and hues. The main new feature is the steel PVD gunmetal watchcase, which stresses the masculine feel of the watch. The watchcase with polished details combined with the black dial make the white digits and hands really stand out. Like all Seaview models, the turning outer dial is also gunmetal coloured, as well as the digits and the 15-minute decompression feature, which enhance the “sober” look of the watch. The anthracite leather strap also adds a final touch of

sophistication. Simplicity is also a watchword on the model with a stainless steel watchcase with a brown leather, metal or finely-worked rubber strap. The elegant
simplicity of the model is also conveyed by a black and white face letting the harpoon shaped hour hand stand out as it points to the digits, which are also black and

In offering countless variations on the oval theme, the Millenary
collection celebrates time for oneself and renders homage to the small joys that embellish our daily life. A child stretching out a tiny hand, a dreamy moment spent gazing at the stars, loving words murmured in your ear… The new releases in the Millenary Précieuse line, composed of splendid jewelry watches and jewelry, add their own inimitable sparkle to these precious moments.
Blooming gems
The Millenary Précieuse jewelry line sublimates the collection’s characteristic oval motif. The polished surfaces play with diamonds and create a radiantly luminous effect. While the interlacing oval shapes are grain set, closed setting forms tiny buds that are lightly scattered over all the jewelry creations. Ring, choker and earrings thus radiate the innocent beauty of an imaginary freshly picked flower. Airy motifs held by a delicate diamond-polished chain, supple interlacing patterns reminiscent of a Japanese cherry tree: this jewelry is a stylized interpretation of the plant kingdom, crafted like lace to dress the body while providing tantalizing glimpses of the skin beneath and revealing a startling sensuality.

Tabou is mouth-watering - a collection suggestive of certain exotic fruits that
grow in the shadows, with the hue of the forbidden. Jewels to be picked and worn for the pleasure of defying a small, delightful taboo every day.
A pleasure that is also tactile, due to the variations on the theme of the precious rounded pavé, solid with gemstones set in burnished silver which, in the pink gold rings, nestles around Rhodolites, Amethysts and intensely blue Topazs.
The Tabou earrings are like succulent berries mysteriously glittering at every movement, so soft in their shape that you’ll feel like never taking them off, even for bed. The same holds true for the short chain with a dark red heart-shaped pendant - a distillation of pure passion for those who can challenge all taboos for the sake of love.

Houston, We Have A News Conference:The Original Space Cowboys Come To Basel
Omega presented one of the most compelling and best-attended
events at this year’s Baselworld trade fair.Four astronauts who wore their OMEGA Speedmasters on the Moon were joined by other key players in NASA’s manned space program at a news conference at the Swatch Group Plaza in the middle of the Hall of Dreams on Saturday, March 28th.
On the 20th of July, Omega and the rest of the world will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing and the event was an advance celebration of one of mankind’s most historic
adventures.
Moonwalkers Buzz Aldrin, Charles Duke, Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan took the stage along with their colleague Thomas Stafford, who commanded the Apollo 10 mission, and Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier.
The dream panel for space aficionados was rounded out by Gerald Griffin, one of NASA’s lead flight directors for the Apollo missions and Jim Ragan, the aerospace engineer responsible for the chronograph tests which led to the selection of the Speedmaster as the only watch qualified for each of NASA’s manned space flights
since May of 1963.
The event began with comments from Omega president Stephen Urquhart, who spoke with pride about his company’s long relationship with NASA and its astronauts.
Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek remembered that the Apollo 11 landing had impressed him so much as a 14-year-old that his parents bought him a Speedmaster at the time. He described the astronauts as “my personal heroes”. Hayek added, “We all know what it is to dream and these guys lived our dreams better than anyone else.”
The astronauts Harrison Schmitt, Thomas Stafford, Eugene Cernan, Charles Duke and Buzz Aldrin, from left,

The CEO’s father, Swatch Group Chairman Nicolas G. Hayek said that he was thrilled to be able to participate in an event “which honors this American face we love – these people who create and do things.”
Master of ceremonies, science journalist Roland Goerg, then introduced the astronauts and scientists, making brief comments about each as he invited them to the podium.
The first one to take his place on stage was Buzz Aldrin who was, with Neil Armstrong, one of the first men to land on the Moon and the second to set foot on the lunar surface. He recalled the launch day vividly: “I found myself standing by myself. In the distance I could see the sun and the waves of the ocean and the millions of people who had come to watch the launch. I knew that it was a moment I would never forget.”
Gerald Griffin, a legendary flight director for ¨the Apollo missions said that as Apollo 11’s Lunar Module descended to the Moon’s surface, there was an unusual stillness at Mission Control in Houston. “It was normally a beehive of activity,” he said, “but for those seconds, you could hear a pin drop. No one breathed until we heard Neil say, ‘Houston. Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.’”
Talking about the unique challenges of operating the Lunar Rover on the Moon’s surface on later missions,
Charles Duke of Apollo 16 pointed out that the Lunar Rover had the potential to be driven quite a distance from the landing site. “But we never went more than a few kilometres away because if it broke down, we’d have to walk back.”
Jim Ragan was responsible for testing the chronographs to be used by NASA’s astronauts. Ragan described placing a “nebulous order for price quotes on chronographs.” He said that the suppliers in the early 1960s knew the watches were for NASA but had no idea what they were to be used for.Referring to the OMEGA Speedmaster, Ragan said, “To the best of my knowledge, the Speedmaster is the only piece of hardware which was used from the very beginning without any modification.”
OMEGA president Urquhart quickly commented to loud applause, “And that’s why forty years later we haven’t changed it.”
Gene Cernan who walked on the Moon with Harrison Schmitt in the last Apollo mission added, “In time, I can assure you that we will send a manned mission to Mars and when that happens, the first astronaut to step onto the Martian surface will be wearing a Speedmaster.”
Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier was part of four space shuttle missions, having flown on Atlantis, Endeavour, Columbia and Discovery.
He was also the first European to take a space walk when he had the responsibility of repairing the Hubble Space Telescope.
Nicollier described OMEGA’s new challenge – the company is providing capital and technological support to the Solar Impulse project whose aim is to circumnavigate the globe in an airplane powered only by the sun.
Nicollier is actively involved in the project, having designed a special tool to help pilots land the aircraft.
At the end of the news conference, Buzz Aldrin was presented with an OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition Moonwatch which was released to commemorate his and Neil Armstrong’s historic walks on the Moon nearly 40 years ago.
Moderator Roland Goerg commented on the panellists: “These men are true heroes of our time. They invested all their energy and talent; they risked their lives to make a dream come true.”
It was particularly fitting that the astronauts shared the stage with two men who worked behind the scenes: one, a flight director who dedicated his professional life to making sure that the astronauts returned safely to earth, and another, who more than 45 years ago, approved the only watch to be qualified for all manned spaceflights: the OMEGA Speedmaster.

Audemars Piguet supports rookie Sébastien Buemi,
a rising star in Formula 1
Pursuing its long-established involvement in the field of motor
racing, notably including its support for Jarno Trulli and sponsorship of the Tour Auto, the Manufacture Audemars Piguet is delighted to announce its partnership with the promising young Sébastien Buemi who has just turned 20 and is joining the exclusive ranks of Formula 1 racing drivers.
Switzerland has been eagerly awaiting another Formula 1 driver for the past 14 years. Associated with the image of the Manufacture Audemars Piguet, Sébastien Buemi from Canton Vaud will begin the 2009 season in Melbourne on March 29th, at the wheel of a Toro Rosso racing car powered by a Ferrari engine.
In signing the agreement with Sébastien Buemi in Lausanne on February 27th 2009, Audemars
Piguet’s CEO Philippe Merk stated: “For Audemars Piguet, partnering this young man with a resolutely fighting spirit was an entirely natural choice. He embodies our brand values through the Tradition of a family firmly anchored in the world of motor sports; the Excellence of his career to date; and the Daring he has displayed in reaching the highest level of his discipline”.
After becoming Swiss champion in the mini-category at the age of 9 and then European go-kart champion in 2002, he began racing single-seater cars the following year. Right from the first race in the Formula BMW series, he was noticed by Red Bull who signed a five-year contract with him, leading to a string of impressive results including becoming Formula BMW vice-champion in 2005, Formula 3 vice-champion in 2007 and GP2 Asian series vice-champion in 2008. His track record is studded with remarkable accomplishments
such as the GP2 race at Magny-Cours, the opening event of the French Grand Prix in 2008: having set off from the 21st spot on the starting grid, he pulled off a brilliant victory, the first of his two wins in the 2008 European series.
In the previous year, his talent had already propelled him to a spot as the third driver on the F1 Red Bull racing team, at the age of just 18.
On December 22nd 2008, Sébastien Buemi signed his first contract as a full-fledged Formula 1 racing driver, with the Scuderia Toro Rosso.
The young man from Canton Vaud still has a long road ahead of him in his attempt to match and even surpass the feats of his illustrious fellow countrymen such as Toulo de Graffenried, Clay Regazzoni and Marc Surer.

124 I PREMIUM - Summer 2009
PREMIUM I INTERVIEW
In each issue of Premium, five questions are posed to leaders in the Jordanian watch and jewelry market to gain some insight on how they achieved their success. In this issue, Premium had the privilege to sit down with Nidal Eid, Time Center sales executive.
5 Questions With Premium
How did you get started in the watch business?I’ve always had a passion for time and watches and one day, seven years ago, I had the opportunity to join Time Center. It was a great step to take which provided me with a vast experience in the watch industry in Jordan and the international arena. It’s truly been a great experience that has helped me gain knowledge and become a strong expert in this amazing field.
What major changes have you seen or experienced in the Jordanian watch market during the last 5 years?Well, there have been many changes in the market. 5 years ago, customers were usually interested only in gold watches; however, this has changed over the past few years, as customers are now searching for watches with complications rather than focusing on the traditional gold watch. Also, nowadays, people are searching for strong brand name watches, and the Jordanian market has responded; for example, now we have Patek Phillip available in Amman and customers no longer have to travel to find their favorite watch brand.
Where do you see this
market in the next five years?I believe more people will leave behind the traditional gold watch in exchange for watches with complications. People are already becoming more aware of the different watch complications and they will demand complication watches even more.
What steps have you taken to increase your expertise in the Watch field? One of the most important steps that I could have ever taken was joining Time Center. With Time Center I am always learning from the best watch experts worldwide I am sure I will continue on this path of becoming a stronger expert. Also, Time Center has facilitated special and exclusive watch trainings for me, for example I’ve attended courses offered by Jaeger LeCoultre, Ulysse Nardin, Breguet, Bulgari, Omega and of course Patek Philippe. Also, in addition to the vital watch training, on multiple occasions I’ve had the opportunity to attend Baselworld which is the biggest and most important event for watch and jewelry industry in the world.
What in your opinion has been your greatest career accomplishment?I would have to say that being part of Time Center and growing with this great company. The experiences that I’ve gained are immeasurable, especially since I get to work with great international watch brands especially Patek Philippe, it’s a dream come true and of course such accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without the direction and support of Mr. Samir Kayali.
