Summer is here which can only mean that the world’s greatest sporting event, The World Cup is in full swing! In honor of this, we have chosen the Argentinean football sensation, Lionel

Messi, as our cover story. Messi recently joined Audemars Piguet as their new icon (p. 24) and is the first footballer to do so.

Regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the film industry, the Cannes Film Festival was business as usual this year with lots of glitz and glamour. During the festival Gucci hosted a party with Vanity Fair in honor of Martin Scorsese (p. 138) where guests such as Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek chose to adorn themselves with pieces from the Gucci High Jewelry collection. Jaeger-LeCoultre, whose exquisite pieces were worn by Diane Kruger, Julie Gayet and Mathew McFayden during the festival, joined forces with famous photographer Lorenzo Aguis for the Cannes Fait le Mur Photo exhibition (p. 122).

In this issue of Premium, we see several of the Haute Horlogie houses reinterpret some of their most sought out models. Including the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph now in platinum with a matt blue sunburst dial (p. 30), Breguet’s Type XXII now available in stainless steel with red detailing, (p. 38) and Ulysse Nardin’s Executive Dual Time pieces now available with silver dials (p. 50).

The reinterpretation of core collections was not only limited to timepieces, but also to jewelry. Famed sculpture Anish Kapoor took on one of Bulgari’s iconic pieces the B.Zero1 ring (p. 102) and created a fresh new piece in pink gold and reflecting steel surfaces.

Enjoy the summer and enjoy this issue of Premium packed with new collections, international and local news!

28 I PREMIUM - Summer 2010

Lionel Messi, the new Audemars Piguet icon

Lionel Messi joins the world of Audemars Piguet and its 135 years of history.

Understandably proud to be welcoming him, Audemars Piguet CEO Philippe Merk salutes the arrival of this exceptional personality who has successively overcome life’s various trials to reach the peak of his art.

The man is simply fascinating – precisely because he has managed to develop the skills that have made him the accomplished sportsman we now know. These skills clearly extend beyond the technical sphere. He has had to

find the necessary inner resources to turn adversity into an ally, since his early life was not exactly rosy. Difficulties have clearly forged his character and his intelligence. He has learned to transform his weaknesses into strengths, as confirmed by his multiple successes.

From his earliest childhood in Argentina, Lionel Messi enjoyed kicking a ball through the streets of his hometown of Rosario. His family quickly sensed “Leo’s” potential, but when he was just 10 years old, a doctor diagnosed a hormonal disease that affected the

growth of this budding player. After researching which Argentinean club could help him to develop his football career, Leo’s family enrolled him for recruitment testing at FC Barcelona in Spain. He was admitted to the Masia, the Barça training centre, which agreed to cover his training as well as his medical care expenses. In 2001, the entire family therefore left Argentina to settle in Catalonia in order to follow Messi’s first steps on the Camp Nou football pitch. Lionel Messi is currently a striker for the legendary FC Barcelona and for his national team, where he wears the legendary N° 10 shirt – the

emblematic number of the world’s greatest footballers…

He is undeniably gifted with an amazing set of qualities. He handles the ball with incredible skill and dribbles his opponents with disconcerting ease. Messi is a complete, fast and creative player with a smart sense of the game that is universally recognised by his peers. In 2009, this determined and passionate young man was rewarded by a string of titles and distinctions: FIFA 2009 World

Player of the Year, the 2009 Golden Ball award and Player of the Spanish League (along with team successes with FC Barcelona, such as the 2006 and 2009 UEFA Champions League, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup and Spanish League).

“Lionel Messi is an exceptional man, the greatest player of his generation. This young and talented athlete not only embodies pure sporting genius, but also the courage and the determination of

a man who fights against all odds to pursue his dreams. Above and beyond his intrinsic value, we are welcoming a big-hearted man with valuable human qualities into the Audemars Piguet family”, said Philippe Merk. Such a life journey was bound to be meaningful to Audemars Piguet. The 135-year history of the Manufacture has also been punctuated by many obstacles. Audemars Piguet has overcome them and in doing so as acquired the kind of competence it now sees in Lionel Messi.

Keenly aware of what such knowledge entails and of the power to effect change that it encompasses, both Lionel Messi and Audemars Piguet are concerned with passing it on to younger generations in preparing for the future. Lionel Messi does so through his new “Fundacíon Leo Messi” created in 2009, and Audemars Piguet through its own foundation. This shared vision will be the driving force behind several social projects that the two partners will be jointly developing over the coming years.

As Messi explains, “I am trying to use my fame to raise public awareness of the distress of women and children around the world! You have to believe in yourself and never lose sight of your dreams… but sometimes our dreams need a little helping hand.” Discreet, humble and committed, as of 2010 he is serving as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.

In its undisputed leadership role within the field of Haute Horlogerie, Audemars Piguet naturally surrounds itself with strong and powerful personalities

Page 31: Premium Magazine Summer 2010

embodying excellence and daring in their own field – be it sport, art, or technology. These partnerships owe nothing to chance; they serve to reaffirm the authentic values conveyed by the Manufacture and centred on the passion for exceptional watches and the expertise they enshrine.

Such is definitely the case for Lionel Messi, who has found a prime partner in Audemars Piguet: “It’s a real joy and a great honour for me to join a prestigious family

such as that of Audemars Piguet, which I have long admired.

This is the start of a beautiful human adventure based on strong shared values and visions”. Friends of the brands will thus enjoy the tremendous privilege of rubbing shoulders with him at various exclusive events. In joining the Audemars Piguet “family”, Leo Messi thus becomes the first footballer to associate his name with that of a prestigious Swiss watch brand.

So hats off to Mr. Messi, who at the tender age of 22 has managed to achieve a subtle balance between daring and wisdom.

We can safely bet that the up and coming generations will acknowledge him as a valuable role model!

Annual CalendarChronograph Ref. 5960P

At Patek Philippe, announcements of totally new watch models are

typically years apart.

But the company places all the more emphasis on keeping its existing collections up to date with continuous refinements.

Because of this ongoing care, the success stories of the individual timepiece families have been particularly enduring: the Calatrava since 1932, the Golden Ellipse since 1968, the Nautilus since 1976, etc. Slight modifications, such as new dials or case materials, not only add fresh touches to collections but also limit the number of watches in a given series.

Aficionados and collectors of rare timepieces appreciate the fact that their watches remain desirable rarities even if they are not part of an expressly limited edition. Thus, the new 2010 version of the Annual Calendar chronograph differs in subtle ways from its predecessors.

Launched in 2006, the Ref. 5960P Annual Calendar chronograph was endowed with the first regularly produced chronograph movement developed from the bottom up by Patek Philippe and crafted entirely in-house from the movement blank to the finished caliber. It is a very modern self-winding movement with a nearly wear-free vertical clutch. A genuine manufacture chronograph movement combined with Patek Philippe’s legendary Annual Calendar was exactly what the market had been waiting for.

As a matter of fact, the Annual Calendar chronograph instantly became one of the manufacture’s

most sought-after models. The 2006 debut platinum model with the charcoal gray dial received a

sibling in 2009: a rose gold version with a dark silvery gray dial. And now, the collection is being expanded by a second platinum model with a matt blue sunburst dial.

Two popular complications united in one watch

The Ref. 5960P unites a mechanical flyback chronograph and an Annual Calendar, two of the most popular complications in timekeeping. The calendar mechanism is based on a patent granted to Patek Philippe in 1996 for the Annual Calendar – it relies on wheels and pinions rather than the more common levers to control the calendar displays. The underlying idea is that rotary motions are more straightforward and easier to control than the reciprocating movements of levers. In actual fact, Patek Philippe’s annual calendar mechanisms have a proven 15-year track record for above-average functionality and reliability. The manufacture’s patented Annual Calendar is a full calendar that automatically distinguishes months with 30 and 31 days and, if kept running, only needs to be manually corrected once a year on the first day of March. It shows the day of the week, the date, and the month, and it has an am/pm indicator.

The chronograph module of the new Ref. 5960P is just as modern. It relies on the traditional columnwheel construction for controlling the start, stop, and reset commands, but instead of a lever for a horizontal wheel clutch, it actuates the clamp of a vertical disk clutch. This solution is extremely dependable and eliminates the risk of hand

bounce in either direction when the chronograph is switched on, because no wheels are abruptly engaged. Since the disk clutch is virtually wear-free, the chronograph hand can be used as a running seconds hand without hesitation. This mode of operation has no negative effect on the rate accuracy of the movement. This is why the Ref. 5960P, contrary to most chronographs, has no seconds subdial.

Cool elegance in platinum with a blue dial

Like the first 2006 model, the new Ref. 5960P has a round case in 950 platinum with an antireflectioncoated sapphire-crystal glass and a sapphire-crystal display back. The round chronograph pushers and the large easy-grip crown are located on the right-hand side of the case. The push pieces for adjusting the calendar indicators are on the opposite side. With a case diameter of 40.5 millimeters, the Ref. 5960 ranks among Patek Philippe’s larger timepieces. Its stately visual presence is amplified by the tangible weight of the platinum case. These decidedly masculine attributes underscore the technical appeal of the chronograph. The watch is worn on a blue, large-scaled alligator strap with a platinum fold-over clasp.

The matt blue sunburst dial with the two-tone monocounter in blue and silver is totally new. Blue harmonizes with the cool gloss of platinum and creates a new timepiece personality with emphasis on fast and convenient readability of all indications. Unlike most other chronographs, the

Page 37: Premium Magazine Summer 2010

37 I PREMIUM - Summer 2010

PREMIUM I WATCHES

Ref. 5960P does hot have three subsidiary dials for the running seconds as well as the minute and hour counters. Instead, it features the combined minute and hour counter on a subdial that largely occupies the bottom half of the watch face. On three concentric scales, it indicates the minutes and hours totalized by the chronograph. The two outer scales are assigned to the longer red hand that shows elapsed minutes from 0 to 30 (blue numerals) and from 30 to 60 (black numerals). The shorter white hand indicates recorded event times of up to twelve hours on the innermost scale.

The day/night indicator in the small round aperture progressively changes from white (day) to dark blue (night). This function is particularly useful when the watch has stopped, making it necessary to distinguish between morning and afternoon hours when setting the time and the calendar indications.

The upper half of the dial is dominated by the Annual Calendar, which indicates the day of the week, the date, and the month in three apertures arranged along an arc between 10 and 2 o’clock. The size of the date at 12 o’clock is particularly remarkable. With its polished white gold frame, the date aperture forms a visual equilibrium with the prominent monocounter in the bottom half of the dial. The small hand of the power-reserve indicator beneath the date aperture moves from plus to minus as it shows the state of wind of the mainspring.

Eight slender applied hour markers in white gold, eleven luminescent dots, and the crisp transferprinted

scale produce the clarity needed

for instant legibility of the dial.

The tips of the leaf-shaped hour

and minute hands extend nearly

all the way to the hour and

minute markers, and the end of

the chronograph hand skims the

fractionally graduated seconds

scale.

Patek Philippe’s new Ref. 5960P

Annual Calendar chronograph

shows how important even

seemingly small details really are in

haute horlogerie, be they a minor

modification in power transmission

or subtle color variations in

dial design. Sometimes, the

consequences are striking and

expressive. The new dial of the Ref.

5960P is a case in point.

Royal OakOffshore Chronographs

Hound’s tooth check, gingham or polka-dot fabrics; the stripes on a

zebra, the spots on a dalmatian, a chequered flag, a chess board... Black and white are diagonal opposites as inextricably entwined as the day and the night. The Royal Oak Offshore collection gives pride of place to these inseparable twins that remain innately superior to colours in that they never go out of fashion and thus maintain their unassailable dominance.

Audemars Piguet is offering aficionados of Royal Oak Offshore chronographs a range of timepieces that can be appreciated like a crescendo, like an irresistible acceleration of time. The steel and rubber basic models will delight purists looking for a sporting look perfectly suited to their wrist – with a 37 mm-diameter case – and free of any frills. Exit diamonds! Then come those with a gem-set bezel, designed for refined women with a strong and slightly impertinent nature. And in the ultimate version, steel gives way to white gold on a black chronograph adorned with the fiery sparkle of hundreds of diamonds.

These unashamedly sporty models are the first 37 mm Royal Oak Offshore chronographs to turn their noses up at diamonds. The legendary stainless steel octagonal bezel shines with a splendid purity that actually highlights its noble bearing. Its eight polished

These brilliant surfaces make an admirable contrast with the satin-brushed finish on the rest of the case. The subtle nuances of the steel vie with the charm of the rubber strap and the black or white pushers. The dials also play on the theme of opposites, with white hour-markers and Arabic numerals adorning the “Méga tapisserie” motif on the black dial, while the silvered dial features black hands and markers. These two timepieces are clearly destined to become classic basics.

More flirtatious: steel, rubber and diamonds

In an irresistibly tempting combination, the imposing

signature case of the Royal Oak Offshore appears with a diamond-set octagonal bezel that lights up the black and steel version radiating an assertively bold style; and matches the silvered dial of the white rubber variation that exudes a cool, fresh charm. Embodying just the right amount of chic sophistication, these interpretations preserve the sporting spirit of this collection focused on rubber and steel and are liable to become summer must-haves.

Scintillating diamonds

Rubber is transfigured and ennobled by the power of diamonds adorning its full-set 18-carat white gold case. Counting the folding clasp securing the strap, this chronograph is embellished by 323 diamonds totalling 5.9 carats. In an ultimate precious touch, the dial

counters are crafted in mother-of-pearl and create a striking contrast with the black “Méga Tapisserie” motif, while the passing hours are marked off with diamonds. This chronograph is destined for exceptional women who will be sure not to miss a moment of life’s most meaningful moments.

Beautiful inside and out

The entire range is equipped with a top-quality selfwinding chronograph movement that is impeccably finished. Given the reliability and accuracy of this calibre, these newcomers to the Royal Oak Offshore collection might well lay claim to be simply perfect – each in their own distinctive way!

Type XXII 3880 ST

For the 60th anniversary of the first deliveries of the famed Type XX watches designed

by Breguet in the 1950s for the French naval air arm, which this year is celebrating its first century of service, Breguet is introducing a contemporary, technically updated reinterpretation of that legendary chronograph, the Type XXII design. Its stainless steel case, 44 mm across, houses a Breguet chronograph movement with silicon escapement and flat balance spring whose frequency has been raised to 10 Hertz (i.e. 72,000 vibrations per hour), endowing the movement with exceptional regulating power, its chronograph seconds hand effecting a complete rotation in 30 seconds. The timepiece’s start function and readout are thus twice as precise.

At the heart of this technical exploit

is the use of silicon, resulting in more lightweight mobile components and the avoidance of the lubrication problems generated by high frequencies. An extra hand at centre counts the minutes by adding together the 30-second spans. At 12 o’clock, a rectangular aperture in the dial displays a retrograding pointer that indicates whether the chronograph seconds hand is completing its first or its second 30-second revolution. The Breguet Type XXII chronograph naturally features a flyback function, allowing the totaliser to be returned to zero and instantly restarted in one and the same operation. Furthermore, the dial includes a second time-zone indicator along with an aperture for a date calendar. A two-position crown resets the second time-zone indicator by moving the hour hand at centre without affecting

the minute hand. With the crown in that position, the date calendar obeys the time of the main time-zone displayed at centre. A 24-hour night-and-day indicator at 3 o’clock tells the wearer whether it is daytime or nighttime in the area covered by the second time-zone. At nine o’clock, a subdial showing the running seconds making full rotations in 30 seconds completes this truly exceptional timepiece. The chronograph’s black dial contrasts crisply with the flyback indications in red. The model comes fitted with an integrated alligator strap.

Jaeger-LeCoultre launches the first Grand Complication in its Master Grand Tradition line –

a tradition-inspired watch with a twist.

With the new Grand Complication watch in the Master Grand Tradition series, Jaeger-LeCoultre again demonstrates its attachment to its horological roots as well as its drive to bring watchmaking in line with the latest in research and development. The watch incorporates three complications that elegantly mingle homological history with cutting edge technology: a minute repeater, a flying tourbillon and a zodiac calendar – each a highly regarded complication of its own right and all constructed according to the latest of watchmaking standards and

Master GrandeTradition Grande Complication

combined through the romantic soul given by true horologists, whose work is deeply rooted in their art.

This is the first time that Jaeger-LeCoultre is presenting a Grande Complication within the Master Grande Tradition line. However, as one of the driving forces in the world of high horology, the manufacture didn’t dwell on copying this marvelous concept; instead the watchmakers were keen on setting new standards by reinterpreting the idea from a modern viewpoint.

Traditionally a Grand Complication consists of three watchmaking complications. One providing an astronomical information – such as a perpetual calendar – the second

a sounding system such as a minute repeater – and a third one showing one or more additional hands, usually a chronograph, but it could be any other complication, for instance, a tourbillon. In the new Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication however those three complications do not merely coexist in the platinum case – they are intertwined in an almost poetic way: For the essence of the watch lies in its interpretation of astronomical timekeeping for the wrist. And there couldn’t be a better driving force than the pulsing heart of a flying tourbillon rotating around the dial, depicting a sky-chart of the northern hemisphere.

Enhancing the astronomical aspect, the tourbillon doesn’t count the passing minutes of the official day with its 24 hours, but it counts the time of the so called Sidereal Day, which is almost 4 minutes shorter than the solar day.

A small sun rotating around on the outer spheres of the dial, where zodiac signs and an indication for the twelve months round off the heavenly display, indicates our ‘official’ time, also known as Mean Solar Time.

Its brand new Jaeger-leCoultre Calibre 945 is a highly complex mechanism with 527 parts, all of which require the hands of a single watchmaker to be assembled and adjusted. Concerning precision, it relies on the latest technology: a flying tourbillon sets the beat with

an advanced silicium-escapement, specially developed for use within an ultra-light titanium cage. Additionally, the watch incorporates an innovative minute repeater, the result of five years of research, where the sound is generated by an ingenious ‘crystal gong’ system in which form-improved gongs are attached to the watch glass. Together with a new striking mechanism called ‘trébuchet hammers’, delivering 80% additional power to that of ordinary gong mechanisms, the watch offers an unprecedented clear and harmonious full sound at the simple push of the slider mechanism. Its classically shaped platinum case

and the movement-parts finished to the highest of watchmaking standards are witness to the experience of 177 years in high watchmaking, which Jaeger-LeCoultre can look back upon. Meanwhile, the ultra modern siliceous escapement is a clear marker of the innovative spirit that drives the manufacture to the present. This unique combination makes the watch a true contender for the annual theme of “Invention through movement”.

The concept of a Grand Complication – revised

Since the heydays of watchmaking, the Grande Complication is the

epitome of absolute mastery in the field of watchmaking. In the times when watches were produced one by one on the bench of a single artisan, the mastery of only one complication already was highly regarded. But truly outstanding were those specialists, who were able to combine two or even three of those complex mechanisms in a single timepiece.

Today the recourse to a classical watchmaking concept is a rightful way to prove the mastership of the old art of horology. But what is more: Today’s master watchmakers not only have to have an intrinsic knowledge of the mechanics of their timepieces and yearlong experience in producing, finishing and adjusting even the tiniest parts, they also require a profound insight into the characteristics and effects – and the trapdoors – of new materials and computer aided production techniques. Thus the construction of a Grande Complication as a contemporary timepiece is as demanding as it always has been.

The Calendar – with a twist

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s watchmakers interweave those three complications in the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 945, a movement that is developed form scratch to provide the highest possible performance. For their version of a Grande Complication, instead of a chronograph they integrated the flying tourbillon as third complication – the most complex version of this gravity defying escapement. They integrated it into the timing mechanism not only as a regulating device, but as the

Page 47: Premium Magazine Summer 2010

prominent showpiece of time itself in the perpetual calendar, acting as a hour hand depicting Sidereal time, with the dial showing the sky chart of the northern hemisphere. On the outside meanwhile, a sun completes a circuit of the dial in precisely 24 hours. Additionally, a ring shows the zodiac signs as well as the months and days.

Sidereal time – Solar time

The Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication is fully dedicated to astronomical timekeeping. Its main asset therefore – and its most striking feature – is the flying tourbillon acting as hour hand, showing not the mean time as found on all wristwatches, but the time unit used by astronomers to keep track of the direction of the stars: Sidereal time.

A day is basically defined as one rotation of the earth around its own axis. Depending on which point of reference is used, astronomy distinguishes between a Solar day and a Sidereal day. The former is measured with the sun as reference, the latter uses other, more distant fixed stars. Since the earth orbits around the sun as well as upon its own axis, the Solar day is slightly longer than the Sidereal day, differing by about one degree or almost 4 minutes. To underline these celestial intentions that make the watch a perfect tool for astronomical observations, a zodiac calendar is placed on the outside edge of the dial together with a month indication to further depict the constellation of the stars at any given time of the year, with an

annual calendar regulating the timing system.

Flying Tourbillon – whirling hour-hand

The Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication is the only watch in high horology to use a flying tourbillon to indicate the celestial time. This indication happens through a complex mechanical construct under the dial, which is itself divided in three different levels: the lowest is a disc turning once every 24 hours with a sun marking the hour at the outer end. On top of this circles a second blue lacquered disc with the star field of the northern hemisphere and the flying tourbillon mounted upon it. In this construction, the flying tourbillon is hovering above the movement in the sky-chart-dial – which itself is mounted on a ball barrel and eight rubies for smooth operation – only connected through a set of wheels and pinions reaching through the whole movement to the other side, where the winding barrel is housed.

The cage of a flying tourbillon, rather than being supported with a bridge at both the top and bottom, is cantilevered and thus held only at the underside. The whole mechanism consists of 73 parts and measures 12.42 millimeters in diameter and 3.85 in height. Built of lightweight titanium, the cage is reduced to its bare essence, providing an unobstructed view at the escapement system and is placed on a lubricant-free ceramic ball bearing. The 10-millimeter monometallic balance wheel with its regulation screws and the Breguet balance spring has an inertia of 11.5 mg cm2 and is

beating at a powerful rate of 4 Hertz.

The silicium parts of the escapement therefore are clearly visible: the watch’s anchor with its integrated pallets and the escape wheel. This escape wheel is a completely new design for reasons of lightness and easy handling. The anchor with integrated pallets has a straight form for better aerodynamics. Using silicium parts not only improves the longtime precision of the watch through its lubrication free performance, it reduces the inertia of the components about a third in comparison to the classically used steel, yielding a 15 percent increase in the efficiency of the whole movement.

Due to the perfectly identical production process in the silicium wafer technology, the most complex forms can be replicated identically. The Research and Development Department of the manufacture has already gained a lot of experience in the use of silicium escapement parts during its 5-year research for the development of the Master Compressor Extreme LAB, the world’s first totally lubricant free watch. Minute repeater – new sounds

For counting down to the minute, the watch is equipped with an additional feature – a complication which alone would make it a masterpiece: a minute repeating mechanism that makes time audible by striking on demand. The sound delivered by a musical watch relies heavily on the gongs

Page 48: Premium Magazine Summer 2010

48 I PREMIUM - Summer 2010

PREMIUM I WATCHES

which are the essential sound producing elements.

To deliver the best possible sound, Jaeger-LeCoultre has developed a completely new cathedral gong, creating an extremely rich sound. These gongs are made of a special alloy and manufactured completely in one piece; their cross section being square and not round in order to provide a larger contact point for the hammer which in turn can strike more forcefully.

Usually the sound of a repeater gong is enhanced by the vibration of the case of the watch. The manufacture’s experts however installed a different kind of ‘loudspeaker’, using their patented ‘crystal gong’, in which the gongs are attached to a layer of metallic foil coated onto the watch’s sapphire glass. With this invention it is possible to make the watch waterproof, because the dampening effect of the gaskets is offset by the crystal gong. This is a key to the true usability of any timepiece. Pushing the slider on the side of the platinum watchcase, two small hammers can be seen striking on the backside. For them the watchmakers invented a special mechanism christened the ‘trébuchet hammer’ to improve the sound of the actual striking.

Instead of a traditional hammer they devised a dual-axis-system with a special joint on a moveable arm. Upon activation, the hammers are accelerated until they touch a small finger, whereupon a second moveable arm is released, thus helping to accelerate the hammers further shortly before the impact. This method utilizes around 80 percent of the force applied by the

spring, whilst traditional hammer systems only deliver a mere 10 to 30 percent of the power originally applied.

Movement – classical decoration and modern materials

The newly designed and constructed hand winding movement 945 embeds classical horology and modern technology in a clearly visible way: All components are decorated with sunburst pattern, circular graining, double sailing or are satin brushed to enhance the classical aspect of the construction. The steel parts are polished and beveled, the adjustment screws blued and the screws for the settings are rhodium plated. Looking on the dial side of the watch however, another spectacular aspect of this Grand Complication can be admired: here the whirling tourbillon is outfitted with the high-tech escapement components which have the dark shimmer of silicium contrasting well to the highly polished silvery titanium grade 5 tourbillon cage.

1000 Hours Chronometer Test – advanced precision

To prove the reliability of the work, the Master Grand Tradition Grand Complication, once completely finished and encased, has to prove itself in the 1000 Hours Chronometer Test – a reinforced version of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s famed 1000 Hours Test, which as well takes into account all aspects of the official COSC-Chronometer test. All in all, the test certifies the water and shock resistance of the complete watch as well as its smooth operation and precision of

this avant-garde escapement. Classical case design – showing its heritage

The case design follows the code of the Master Grand Tradition line: classical in style and precious in materials. This Master Grand Tradition Grand Complication will be produced in a limited edition of 75 pieces in white gold, honoring the exclusivity of the movement, which is so complex and the interactions between its three complications so delicate that the whole mechanism has to be assembled by one single master watchmaker.

The movement is then encased within a round white gold case, in which polished lugs and case back contrast with the brushed case sides. While a sapphire glass in the back allows one to lovingly examine the finely finished movement, the front is covered by a domed sapphire glass and a sloping bezel, which underlines the classical look of the watch and provides the 44 millimeter diameter watch with a pleasing design, concealing its height of 15.6 millimeters.

Combining a good part of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s fundamental expertise in high horology and coagulating it in a single timepiece, the Grand Complication is a worthy member in the club of the Master Grand Tradition line. It embodies the epitome of classical horology mingled with cutting edge technology.

Senator Diary

Presenting a world first—the

Senator Diary from Glash

wtte Original. No mechanical

watch has ever made it possible to

set an alarm up to 30 days ahead

of time—until now.

So? So picture this: Your day is

packed with appointments, and

you’re looking at a very busy week.

In fact, you’re booked up solid for

a month.

So much to do, so little time.

There is one appointment, however,

that you must keep at all costs.

On a certain day, at a certain hour,

you absolutely must be there.

Think about it. Which moment in

the weeks ahead will mean the

most to you (or to someone very

close to you)?

You know the answer, so why wait?

Make a decision. Seize the day.

Ready? Good.

Now. Set the date. Set the time.

Wind the alarm. Sit back and

relax.

Your Senator Diary will take care of

the rest.

The Senator Diary is beautifully

balanced, with two crowns

positioned directly opposite each

other on either side of the stainless

steel case, each flanked by a

pusher. The crown and pusher on the right operate the compelling panorama data display, positioned at 3 o’clock within the galvanized black dial. White gold hour, minute and sweep second hands enhance the elegance of the design.

The eye of the connoisseur is drawn immediately to the diary alarm—a black subdial framed by a German silver ring at 9 o’clock and a gently curving aperture indicated by a red arrow at 6 o’clock. To set the alarm, first select the date, referring to the diary alarm window positioned within the subdial at 10 o’clock. Press the pusher positioned at 8 o’clock until the letter ‘d’ appears in the window. Turn the 10 o’clock crown until the red and silver pointer selects the correct date from Arabic numerals 1 to 31. To set the time, press the pusher once more; the letter ‘h’ appears. Turn the crown to select the time, referring to the aperature at 6 o’clock, from quarter-hour intervals from 00.15 to 24.00 hours. To set the alarm, press the pusher once more to bring the alarm symbol (a bell) into view, then turn the crown to wind the alarm. When the set date and time arrives, the alarm rings – for up to one minute. To stop the alarm (or to cancel one set previously), press the 8 o’clock pusher until the ‘alarm off’ symbol appears in the window (a black line struck through the bell).

The heart of the Senator Diary is the Glashütte Original Caliber 100-13, which combines the Caliber 100-03 with the extraordinary new diary appointment module for total of 600 components (the diary appointment module alone consists of 340 components), all but a handful of which are

designed, manufactured, finished and painstakingly assembled in the Glashütte Original manufactory. A superb example of the art of engineering at Glashϋütte Original, the ingeniously interlocking components permit the wearer to set an appointment beyond the end of the month, even when a manual correction of the date is required; any change in date at the end of the month is passed along to the alarm mechanism, obviating the need to reset the alarm. A second spring barrel built into the module ensures that even if the watch runs down, the alarm remains wound.

The Caliber 100-13 automatic movement exhibits further evidence of unparalleled excellence in fine mechanical watches from Glashütte Original, including a three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, polished steel components, beveled edges and blued screws and hand engravings. These exquisite finishings are easily visible through the antireflective sapphire crystal case back.

The Senator Diary is available as described above and in a version featuring a rose gold case, rose gold hour, minute and sweep second hands and applied rose gold hour markers on a galvanized silver dial. The date indicator on the diary alarm subdial is in blue, as is the small arrow indicating the diary alarm time aperture at 6 o’clock. Both versions feature a finely worked black Louisiana alligator leather strap.

Precious Timepieces

Bulgari expresses its unmistakable design and renders homage to refined

femininity through its most precious collections. An eclectic spirit distinguishes every Bulgari creation.

A unique collection seduces women with modern allure through the purity of diamonds and the clarity and exclusivity of precious stones, rendering these unique timepieces true objects of desire. Special attention has always been dedicated to the female public through exclusive variations on jewellery watches, reserved for women with a sophisticated but extremely modern look.

Variations on successful jewellery collections or inspirations that bring refined Italian design to life, they express the strong tie between Bulgari and its origins, the love for Greco-Roman art and architecture. The Bulgari jewellery watches date from the 1920’s. Serpent-form bracelet watches inspired by the Art Déco style then in vogue wrapped their gold spirals around the arm, with the dial concealed in the bejeweled head. Bulgari is now positioned on the world watch market with collections that perfectly satisfy the demands of sophisticated customers.

Through a stylistic evolution that focuses on individual details, every element of the watch becomes resolute, elegant, and sinuous, to become the coherent, explicit, and sophisticated expression of a modern, sparing style. In the world of luxury watches,

Assioma presents a new design that is emblematic not only of the link that has always bound Bulgari style and architecture, but also of the direct connection with the most significant components of

the models that preceded it, such as “Bulgari Bulgari”, Rettangolo, and Ergon. The women’s version of the Assioma is part of the High Jewellery collection.

The precious white gold case is embellished with baguette and brilliant cut diamonds. The complex invisible setting conceals the mounting of the dial, which is embellished by baguette cut diamonds. The clasp and winding crown on which baguette cut diamonds and one brilliant cut diamond are set express the exclusive character of this new version.

Astrale, a great success of jewellery making, inspires the new precious watches.

Its name is inspired by the magical world of constellations, where the perfection of the circle is enriched by the light of diamonds, the beauty of emeralds, and the splendor of rubies that alternate in different cuts and sizes, a typical characteristic of Bulgari style. Gold, diamonds, and precious stones, featured in the brilliant, pear, princess, and marquise cuts, underscore the richness and elegance of this refined watch, dedicated to demanding women with strong personalities.

A new and exclusive version, Assioma D is born from the reinterpretation of the preceding Assioma line. The basic elements of the case and two bridges have been separated, maintaining the distinctive traits of Assioma, the perfect union of a square and circle. Assioma D expresses the splendor of Diamonds, synonym of purity and loved throughout the ages by women, and now the absolute protagonist of this exclusive collection.

The extreme care dedicated to each individual component of the

watch, from the case to the dial, from the bracelet to the jewel clasp, is underscored by the most extraordinary technique of invisible setting typical of High Jewellery.

The setting disappears, exalting the shine of diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. More than 520 hours are dedicated by an indi¬vidual master setter to each individual watch, rendering it a genuine masterpiece. With the versions set in diamonds, Bulgari renders homage to irresistible femininity, celebrating audacious style, sophisticated elegance, and sophisticated forms. Among its most classic and representative distinctive marks, Parentesi expresses a contemporary idiom through attention to detail. The result of inspiration on the part of the Bulgari design team, which reworked an element drawn literally from daily life, the first Parentesi line was created at the end of the 1970’s. This is expressive of both Rome and architecture, and both of them are closely bound up with the heritage of Bulgari.

The Parentesi element is inspired by the sidewalks of Rome, and in particular the Travertine joint in the blocks of stone used to pave them. The first watch mounted on a Parentesi bracelet dates from 1985 and was originally available in a series of variations: entirely in gold, in gold and steel, and in gold and diamonds.

The watch-bracelet expresses the essence of a classic icon that has been readapted, studied, and reapplied to the contemporary nature of time, giving life to

The Parentesi collection has now been expanded with four prized versions where diamonds, sapphires, and rubies elegantly clad the case, dial, clasp, and winding crown, becoming the absolute protagonists of this exclusive collection.

1931

The highly successful 1931

Collection by Louis Erard has

grown a new shoot on its

fertile branch of affordable haute

horlogerie.

Housed in a generously-sized,

contemporary 44mm steel case,

the new 1931 – offered in a

Moon Phase or GMT Big Date

version – embodies a special

kind of elegance: refined lines,

subtle interplays of structures and volumes, and judiciously selected materials.

Added to this are a perfect mastery of technical elements and uncompromising finishing. Because Louis Erard wanted to preserve its impressive, highly distinctive case, while giving its new creations a more classical look, large Roman numerals now embellish a finely guilloched dial, offered for the

first time in anthracite grey or in silvered tones as contemporary as they are timeless.

In the Moon Phase version, the printed date on the flange adds a remarkable sense of depth to the layered structure, while the moon phase gives the whole piece an impression of softness and balance.

Robust, elegant and unpretentious, the stylish, sophisticated 1931 GMT

Big Date is particularly appealing when its dial scintillates with silvered reflections accentuated by a coffee-coloured strap, or when a noble aura emanates from its coal-grey accents skilfully orchestrated between the dial and strap.

An invitation to travel or dream,

the new 1931 GMT Big Date or Moon Phase is a strong temptation to succumb to the pleasure of owning a true haute horlogerie timepiece without having to spend an astronomical sum.

HaussmanBlack Ghost

Year after year, black makes its presence known and sets the colour standard in the

world of watchmaking. The new Haussman Black Ghost from SAINT HONORE is as mysterious as they come, stretching the boundaries of the imagination and revealing its secrets only he who wears it…or she who gets close enough to admire it.

The black PVD surface coating does indeed pair perfectly with the generous case size (45mm diameter) and gives the entire

readability, and every indicator stands out with panache: the dial distinctly displays 3 retrograde counters; 30-second, 5-minute, and 60-minute counters; the hands, indices, and date window at 4 o’clock.

The black rubber strap melds perfectly with the case, giving even greater strength to the singular character of this piece.

This watch is not made for just anyone.

Though it still has all the alluring attributes that made the Haussman Magnum series such a success - established character, athletic build, visible screws, ETA chronograph movement with advanced retrograde functions - the new edition of Black Ghost turns every head with its rare and original design.

Last year, Movado pushed the sportive, elegant SE® to new heights of design distinction

with the introduction of the powerful Movado SE Extreme.

Now for 2010, Movado brings innovative black carbon fiber to SE Extreme’s striking sandwich construction, adding a bold new layer of material innovation and design intrigue. Marked by sharply cut bevels, black carbon fiber signal crown protector, black carbon fiber cabochon crown, and custom case-back engraving, this commanding new SE Extreme model is powered by a fine Swiss automatic movement with exhibition case-back.

Its robust 44 mm case is constructed in alternating layers of stainless steel and black carbon fiber. Four flat polished dots add signature SE character to the simple brushed steel bezel, providing stark contrast to the richly textured black carbon fiber Horwitt Museum® dial detailed by a flat rhodium-plated dot and stick hands, and subtle red lettering. Pulsomatic

The year 2010 marks the fortieth birthday of the world’s first LED digital

watch, made by Hamilton. The American brand is celebrating the invention of the technology that revolutionized the watch industry with the new Hamilton Pulsomatic, a digital timepiece with futuristic design.

This watch fuels the spirit of the digital age with Swiss craftsmanship in the form of an automatic movement, to appeal to wearers who love the fact that time never stands still.

Back to the future

The Pulsar named after puzzling astronomical bodies that emit precise radio pulses was considered as the first solid state wrist computer in the world.

Today’s Hamilton Pulsomatic has a science-fiction look, combined with elegance expressed by smooth shapes and surfaces. The brushed stainless steel case resembles a Space Age television screen from the front, while a ridged effect on the sides and crown is strikingly contemporary. A sleek black screen adds another dimension to the high-tech appearance.

Wearers of the original Hamilton digital watch in the 1970s included the famous American singer and actor Sammy Davis Junior, the 38th US president Gerald Ford and the Shah of Iran – the new piece promises to attract innovative individuals with an urge to differentiate themselves from

Today’s technology

The liquid crystal display on the Hamilton Pulsomatic is powered by an innovative Swiss automatic movement, the H1970.Fully charged the watch has a power reserve lasting 120 days. The robustness demanded by twenty-first century lifestyles is afforded by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and water resistance to a depth of 50 meters. And the ultimate touch of today is a choice of rubber strap as an alternative to a more classical stainless steel bracelet.

Veloci-T Gent

In the Tissot Veloci-T Gent, the revolutionary new chronograph movement, recently introduced

by Tissot, meets elegant design with a sporty accent. A duo of models shares a black and silver colour scheme and sophisticated, speedometer-inspired looks.

Two of the chronograph counters are framed with their own metal ‘circuit’ at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. The third one sits at nine o’clock to balance the date display surrounded by a retro TV-screen shape on the opposite side. These

timepieces are geared to the needs and tastes of active wearers who frequently take the time to appreciate the essential things in life.

The appeal of modernity

Safe in the knowledge that their watches contain a dynamic new movement, wearers of the Tissot Veloci-T Gent have different options for making a statement on their relationship with modernity. One model has a black rubber strap with a sculpted form. And all of its

counters have a black background to complete the sleek overall look. Its counterpart integrates a metal bracelet. Two of the counters on this variation have silvery-white backgrounds. Either of the watches is completely at home in combination with anything from tailored business attire to urban sports gear.

Eco-Drive Dome

In June 2010, CITIZEN will launch Eco-Drive DOME, which was presented as a concept

model last year. Only 500 of these watches will be produced in this exclusive, limited series.

The dome-shaped layered dial conveys light to the movement and emits futuristic sparkles. The distinctive design, which features the Eco-Drive engine enclosed inside the case, embodies the concept of light energy that you can wear.

Eco-Drive Is Our Design for the Future

The year 2010 is the 80th anniversary of the founding of Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. It is also a historic year in which Eco-Drive takes a new step forward.

Eco-Drive development began 35 years ago and has long been praised as an innovative technology. The challenge has always been how to incorporate its power-generation advances in watches that epitomize beauty.

Committed to the proposition that Eco-Drive should be incorporated in each new generation of watches, we have worked for almost half

This strikingly handsome chronograph demonstrating first-class watch design

comes in IP rose gold and black or in a steel case. It is an updated interpretation of the great classic HB-136 that has evolved towards a larger size with a correspondingly stronger character.

Each feature has a purpose: the grooves in the bezel extending the applied hour markers on the dial, highlighted by the contrasting texture of the chapter ring.

The seconds track is colored for visibility while the case guards the crown as well as the quartz movement. Equally well thought-out are the applied Arabic numerals and the date’s window offset to the lower right. Ready for action down to 10 ATM.

ToyWatch loves accessories with a personality and for the 2010 season makes a

sensation with a collection drawing inspiration from the military style, with a new slant: no rigorous and stern details, but instead supersexy and very cool objects.

″This style has been very popular for many years on the world fashion catwalks, for both men and woman″, says Mara Poletti, President of ToyWatch. ″We wanted to make it our own, but in an imaginative and ironic way: the ToyWatch Army collection has been designed for those who love using their own look as a style and conquest play!″.

The enthusiasts will be able to choose from five models, in a Technicolor version: camouflage design in green, sand and fuchsia hues, while the blackout model is black with tinted glass, available also with the strap in camouflage green.

It is then details that make a difference and make these models unique: the graduated bazel is equipped with deeper grooves reproducing the tank design, with raised numbers. They are available in the solo tempo model with plasteramic case.

All the models are water resistant up to 5 atmospheres. The winding crown is made of steel with ToyWatch logo. The calendar is at 3 o’clock with magnifying lens. The strap is in silicone and has a butterfly closing.

Football 2010

As football fever spreads, the Flik Flak team has called on the support of Bugs Bunny,

Daffy Duck and friends to get active with kids all over the world.

A series of seven special watches, each one dedicated to a different football-crazy nation, makes up the collection, created in association with Looney Tunes.

The brightly coloured designs, each model in its own individualised packaging, come in a new, full-size scuba-style shape with a rotating bezel and are aimed at football fans aged eight and above. Injury time is obviously not on the schedule. However, the water resistance and shock resistance of these Swiss-made products make them perfect accessories to go with muddy clothes, spiked boots and bags of energy.

Kicking off in Europe

Switzerland has Bugs Bunny and Tasmanian Devil on its side, both attempting to score a goal from the red and white strap.

Hot on the heels of the Flik Flak home team are watches dedicated to four other European nations.

On the watch for Spain, the cartoon characters tackle each other against the background of the vibrant Spanish national colours. Sylvester the cat prepares to head a winning ball for the Italian team, while young French fans stylishly sport a patriotic collage of red, white and blue. Tasmanian Devil tries his luck to score for Germany,

not an easy task with Bugs Bunny in defence on the other side of the case.

The global language of football

Flik Flak celebrates the fact that football is a global language with two watches from further afield than its European ‘neighbourhood.’ Taking pride of place in 2010 is a model dedicated to South Africa. On this one, the cartoon characters open their mouths so wide to cheer, that they risk catching a stray ball with their teeth.

The ultimate destination on the Flik

Flak football world tour is Brazil, with a watch designed to evoke the passion and energy of this nation’s renowned playing style. Whoever they support, Flik Flak fans all over the world unite this summer on the side of quality, fun and coolness.

What makes Flik Flak tick

Flik Flak is the world’s best-selling children’s watch and has been keeping youngsters all over the world on track since 1987.

It was the first child’s watch to translate the concept of telling the time into accessible fun and entertainment. The Flik Flak

watches are all Swiss-made, featuring a robust aluminium case and scratch-resistant mineral glass. Their power comes from Swiss quartz movements and they are shock-resistant.

Flik Flak is a brand of the Swatch Group, the world’s largest watch producer and distributor, with 157 production sites in Switzerland.

Anish Kapoor has been chosen by

Bulgari to reinterpret the iconic B.zero1

ring. The celebrated Bulgari ring was

launched in 2000. It combined in an

innovative manner two iconic Bulgari

motifs: the Tubogas and the “BVLGARI”

logo. The first examples were in plain

yellow or white gold, but soon the

proportions of the ring were modified:

from mono to multi bands, with or

without diamonds. It has been and still

is Bulgari’s bestselling ring: 1.400.000

pieces have been sold since its launch.

Anish Kapoor’s greatest contribution

features the original combination of

pink gold and reflecting steel surfaces.

His interpretation merges tradition

with contemporary innovation. The

curved forms and the mirror-like

surfaces, characteristic of his artworks,

find shape in this new design which

perfectly represents the contemporary

Bulgari style .

It is the first time that a Bulgari

creation is reinterpreted by a

contemporary and prominent

international artist ..

“Sweet, incomparable Josephine, what a strange effect you have

on my heart!”

Quote from a letter of Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine, Paris, December 1795.

Chaumet celebrates its 230th anniversary with a tribute to its first muse, Josephine. A new Jewelry collection in which the tiara is turned into a ring and crowns the finger.

Josephine, Chaumet’s first muse

It was Napolean Bonaparte who gave the future Empress Marie-Josephe-Rose her “loving name”, Josephine. Josephine, a woman of power and taste, was the first renowned customer of Marie-Etienne Nitot, the founder of Chaumet in 1780. It was he who created the jewels for her coronation on December 2nd, 1804. Chaumet also designed stylish and sentimental pieces, gifts from the Emperor for his one and only love, Josephine. For she did not follow fashion: she led it.Today, Chaumet dedicates its new Jewellery Collection to a woman ahead of her time. Daring…Josephine.

30 Jewellery pieces were created by the Chaumet workshop. They revisit the tiara and turn it into a ring for a new, hand-embellishing experience.

to be the jewelry of the royals from Constantine to Queen Elizabeth III, and they are also considered to be good luck if a bride wears them for they bring marital bliss. So if you’re on the verge of getting married and planning on buying your wedding jewelry, you can always get yourself some precious pearls to ensure yourself a happy and successful marriage. Keep in mind that jubilee pearls are given on the 30th anniversary of a wedding, and regular pearls are given on the 3rd anniversary.

However, many women are concerned when buying pearls as they worry about being deceived into buying fake ones! Well, Kayali Jewelry is here to help you differ fake pearls from the real ones. It’s the simplest traditional test – you take the pearl and rub it gently against your teeth, if it feels gritty

and rough, then you know that the pearl is a real one, however, if the pearl feels smooth and slippery then you know that the pearl is fake. Don’t buy it.

Have you ever wondered about the different colors of pearls, from creamy white all the way to black? Well, surprisingly enough the color of the pearl depends on the species of the mollusk that carries it! It usually takes the color of the inside shell of the mollusk, the pigment resides between two layers that separate the mollusk from the pearl. Yet, artificial coloring is used regularly with suppliers, where they just dye or bleach the fake round piece of refined glass! Moreover, pearls have been used in the cosmetic world for centuries as people have relied on “pearl powder” that is made up from grounded up shells and low-grade

pearls to give the skin that pale, pearlescent glow.

The amino acids that are found in pearls are essential to heal and maintain cells in the human body! So not only are peals pretty to wear, but they also can give your skin a beautiful glow.

Stablitto

Stablitto SU2010 Earrings

Once upon a time, children played with simple toys like coloured sticks or daisy

chains. This enchanting family of bijoux from Swatch brings back that innocent age with coloured blossoms and fine link chains, fashioned of stainless steel 316L and multicoloured synthetic resin inlays. The design plays with a simple geometry of sticks and circles: the necklace is formed of coloured blossoms of different sizes arranged in a triangular design; the bracelet mimics a daisy-chain, and blossoms dangle from the earrings. The ring presents a single flower, mounted on a simple band of steel.

Iron Man 2AMVOX3: Tony Stark’s Wrist Armor

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment held the Premiere of their latest

production, IRON MAN 2, on Monday, April 26th in Los Angeles.

Jaeger-LeCoultre is prominently featured in the film, with the lead actor wearing several timepieces from the AMVOX, Reverso and Master Grand Tourbillon collections.

In IRON MAN 2, the world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the armored

Super Hero IRON MAN.

Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Stark is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, Stark gorges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces. Tony Stark further expresses

his quest for innovation and technology by donning the Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT in Platinum, Master Grand Tourbillon 1833 and Reverso Grande 985.

“Jaeger-LeCoultre is thrilled to have our timepieces showcased on the wonderful character of Tony Stark played by the phenomenal actor Robert Downey Jr.” said Jaeger-LeCoultre CEO Jérôme Lambert. “We have no doubt that the film will be a fantastic success.

AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT: horology meets high technology

Recognizable by its unique design, incarnating the essence of legendary sports car brand Aston Martin and Jaeger-LeCoultre, AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT is a technical masterpiece of the very highest order of watchmaking.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 988 combines the precision of the tourbillon with two complementary functions: a dual time-zone display and a date indicated by a hand that makes a big leap between the 31st of the month and the 1st of the following month, so as to never obstruct the view of the spinning tourbillon. The open worked dial provides a clear view of the bridges and main plate, clothed in titanium in harmony with the finest watchmaking traditions. Going further still on the quest for excellence and meaningful innovation, the case of the AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT is the first ceramic case ever made by the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre.

AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT: horology meets high technology

Above and beyond the specific codes that immediately establish the Aston Martin-related identity of this unparalleled watchmaking creation, the third model in the line AMVOX, the AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT, immediately stakes its claim within the most exclusive fine watchmaking segment.

The extraordinary Jaeger-LeCoultre 988 movement combines the precision of the tourbillon with

two complementary functions: a dual time-zone display and a date indicated by a hand that makes a big leap between the 31st of the month and the 1st of the following month, in order to avoid spoiling the view of the constantly spinning tourbillon. The open worked dial provides a clear view of the bridges and main plate, clothed in titanium in harmony with the

finest watchmaking traditions. Nonetheless, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin are never content with “mere” excellence if it does not also comprise an innovative touch –which is why the case of the AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT will go down in history as the first ceramic case ever made by the Manufacture.

The OMEGA Boutique at The Swatch Art Peace Hotel

When the OMEGA Boutique at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel opens on the

26th of May, its visitors will be welcomed to a historic architectural gem which has been a landmark address in Shanghai for more than a hundred years.

An historic hotel; an innovative operating concept

The Palace Hotel opened its doors for business in 1908 and it immediately became one of the major attractions on the Bund, the fabled street in Shanghai characterized by its distinctive four- to six-storey western-style buildings constructed in the nineteenth and early twentieth

centuries. The hotel hosted high-profile events and welcomed guests who would play a significant role in Chinese and international history.

Now, more than a century later, it has reopened as the Swatch Art Peace Hotel. The building at the corner of the Bund and Nanjing Road, which enjoys protected status as a cultural monument, has been renovated by experts in historic preservation who were particularly mindful of the building’s heritage and its status as one of Shanghai’s most significant and well-known landmarks.

Also worth noting: Nanjing Road and the Champs Elysees in Paris recently became partner streets, acknowledging the similarly

prominent role each plays in its home city.

The Swatch Art Peace Hotel has a unique operating concept: it combines a retail area with a hotel where invited artists live and work. OMEGA and three of its Swatch Group partners – Breguet, Blancpain and Swatch – have boutiques on the hotel’s ground floor.

to present the brand’s full product range in an environment which perfectly bridges the hotel’s storied past and its promising future.

While the Swatch Art Peace Hotel OMEGA Boutique has some of the design elements shared by all of the brand’s flagship stores, it is absolutely unique in that it was necessary to preserve the existing interior architecture and the original art deco fittings. Because of the building’s protected status, no modifications could be made which would compromise its structural integrity.

The ornately carved art deco ceiling and the impressive support pillars in the boutique are exquisitely trimmed in gold with an attention to detail which recalls the days when Shanghai was first earned its accolade “the Pearl of the Orient”.

Visitors to the OMEGA Boutique at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel will recognize certain furnishings which are part of the brand’s global flagship concept, including the free-standing display cases and the champagne glass along its back walls. The furniture is also the same as that used in the brand’s network of boutiques around the world.

As nothing – including lighting fixtures – could be hung from the ceiling in the 141 square metre retail space, specially-designed tapered ribbed profile elements have been placed at locations throughout the boutique.

These are equipped with all the necessary electrical wiring and subtle LED lighting which allow the room’s historical fittings to be

preserved but which also allow OMEGA to display its products in a warm, welcoming environment. The OMEGA Boutique at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel offers the entire spectrum of the brand’s watches along with products from the Fine Leather and Fine Jewellery collections. All of these are presented in one of Shanghai’s most extraordinary buildings whose

specially trained staff members are looking forward to welcoming visitors from around the world to share a special OMEGA experience.

the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean and George Clooney

George Clooney is photogenic. Admittedly, that’s not exactly a news

flash. And when the pictures are being taken by one of the world’s leading fashion and celebrity portrait photographers, the resulting images are bound to be a bit more attractive than your average family reunion snapshot. Of course, if you happen to be George Clooney, whatever you wear is, at that moment, the very

definition of fashion and cool.OMEGA has created an advertisement featuring a photograph of Clooney taken by Norman Jean Roy. The actor is dressed in jeans and a plain white shirt with an open collar. On his wrist is another symbol of simple elegance: the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Co-Axial in stainless steel with a black dial.

The copy is limited to “GEORGE

CLOONEY’S CHOICE”.The new advertisement for the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean sends a clear message: the ultimate style statement can be communicated with a plain white shirt and just the right watch.

It’s probably easier if you’re George Clooney.

Renovated OMEGA Museum in Biel Reopens

The OMEGA Museum in Biel reopened following several months of extensive

renovations.

The Museum, which opened in January of 1984, is the oldest museum dedicated to a single watch brand. Located just opposite OMEGA’s headquarters in Biel, it features items representing the brand’s entire history, including the watchmaker’s bench used by Louis Brandt when he began to make watches more than 160 years ago.

OMEGA president Stephen Urquhart likened the period of renovation to an archaeological dig. “Not only did we renovate the whole Museum but we also restored many of the period features of this listed building. The project gave us a chance to review our entire

collection. Some of the objects displayed are being presented to the public for the first time, including things which we didn’t even know were hidden in the archives.”

One of these is a pocket watch used by Albert Einstein, a man whose work is closely identified with time.

OMEGA’s history is vividly recreated with displays presenting all the brand’s most important stories. Visitors will have a chance to examine the equipment OMEGA has developed and used in its timekeeping role at the Olympic Games since 1932.

The brand has been closely involved in NASA’s manned space programme for more than 45 years and OMEGA Speedmasters were

worn on all six lunar landings. The

Museum exhibit highlighting the

role of the Speedmaster in space

features four watches which were

worn on or near the Moon.

One of the new sections of the

Museum is dedicated to prototypes

– watches which were developed

by OMEGA but, for various reasons,

never introduced into commercial

production.

Some of the timepieces on display

have been long time favourites of

visitors to the OMEGA Museum,

including the wristwatch worn

by author/adventurer/spy T. E.

Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia)

and the watch worn by John F.

Kennedy at his inauguration when

he became 35th President of the

United States.
