How To Offer a Mass Intention
Did you ever notice that every Mass said here at St. Alphonsus is offered for a special intention? The entire congregation prays for that intention during the petitions (Prayers of the Faithful) when we say, "For those who have died, and for the intention of this Mass: (named intention)"
Masses are often offered for family, friends and relatives that have died. Praying for the dead is a Spiritual Work of Mercy. Offering a Mass for someone that has died is an especially comforting gesture to the family. Mass can also be offered to commemorate joyful occasions and to give thanks to God for blessings received.
The customary offering for a Mass here is $15. However, any amount that you would like to offer is completely acceptable. You can request Masses by visiting the Parish Office during office hours or calling the Parish Office at 773-525-0709.

I have coached all three of my children in soccer at some time in their lives. I loved teaching them and their
teammates the importance of functioning as one unit. If we were not all moving together toward victory, we
would all find ourselves together in defeat.
We used to go through one drill I called the "human foosball." We would scrimmage with players in lines like
on a foosball table. If you ever got too far behind or too far ahead of those in your line, play would stop and
the ball would go to the other team. The goal was to help build an awareness of where your teammates were
on the pitch and to teach the lesson that no one player is a team onto themselves.
As disciples and stewards, we sometimes find ourselves far behind or maybe even too far ahead. As a conse-
quence, our actions either hinder the ability of the Body of Christ to evangelize and pass on the faith to a
new generation or present the Church as an entity that sees itself as judgmental or too holy to be in the
world.
We are called to community, and in that community, we must be aware of our brothers and sisters in the
faith. At times, we need to help them grow in their faith. Other times, we need to slow down and realize that
we cannot change the world on our own. We all have unique gifts we are called to share, and we can only
bear true witness to the power of the Body of Christ when we are all moving together and making each other
strong.
-Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
What is Offertory and Why is it Important? The Offertory, or Weekly Collection, at Mass is an integral part of the Sunday liturgy, not just because it is
the primary means by which the parish receives financial support from the parishioners, but because it is
also an expression of our gratitude to God for the blessings He has given us to return a portion of them
back to Him for use by His Church.
The weekly offering is to the parish what your paycheck is for you and your family. This is how the
bills get paid: utility bills, insurance, salaries for clergy and staff, and all the other line items you see
in the annual financial reports.
When we give to our parish we are witnessing to the youth of our parish and to the world about our values
and about what’s important to us. Please prayerfully consider your weekly support of St. Alphonsus as we
work to share the message of God’s love through our vibrant parish community.
We encourage you to give regularly online through GiveCentral or through offertory envelopes.
Contact our parish office today at 773-525-0709 to ask how you can ensure
St. Alphonsus Parish continues to thrive through your offertory giving.

Seeking Oktoberfest Beer Captain Volunteers
Planning for the 2018 St. Alphonsus Oktoberfest has begun!
This years fest will be held September 28-30 and we’re currently recruiting Beer
Captains who will commit to running one of the beer tents for the weekends
festivities. We are looking to add 4-8 people to the team who have prior Ok-
toberfest volunteer experience.
This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to be more involved in our
parish’s biggest fundraiser!
St. Alphonsus Oktoberfest has grown exponentially since it’s inception and vol-
unteer contributions play a large role in our continued growth. Volunteering is a
great way to meet new people and to give back to the parish, and it’s also a lot of fun!
Beer Captains commit to attending two mandatory training sessions in either August or September and work-
ing multiple shifts on September 28, 29 or 30. Prior fest volunteer experience required.
Please email [email protected] for more details or to apply.
June HIV/AIDS Awareness Days
June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. There are an estimated 50,000 new HIV infections in the U.S. every year.
Some 20-25% of those persons living with HIV/AIDS do not know that they are infected with the virus and
could be spreading it to others. The only way to know if you have the virus is to be tested. This national day
of testing is an opportunity for people nationwide to learn of their HIV status.
For more information, visit www.hivaidsservicesministry.org. Please pray for those living with HIV/
AIDS and those affected by it.
Gospel Meditation- Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture
Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family "is the cradle of life and
love" (On the Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can
cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus!
In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A
large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff op-
position from his family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended
family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extend-
ed relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire
clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not
amused. "They set out to seize him, for they said, 'He is out of
his mind.'" To make matters worse, the religious authorities
even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess
by any standards.
The family's perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish
culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling
and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family
knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus'
bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family!
Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are my
mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what he is about.
He has always known he would be about the business of his
Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business
of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God.
In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King.
Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not
depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God."
Live the Liturgy- Inspiration for the Week
A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Is the kingdom of your
soul divided? We are often confronted with choices that appear to be good
but in essence are not.
We struggle with choosing good over evil and right from wrong.
Conflicts often exist within, and we walk through life with a divided heart.
We realize what is needed to live with God but find ourselves doing the
exact opposite.
As we gather with our brothers and sisters and seek God's gift of Christ in
the Eucharist, may we not only be united with one another in faith but
united with God within. All conflicts and divisions can cease, and we can
act with a focused, strong, and determined heart.

AACA Preschool Opening
Is your family or a family you know looking for a preschool? AACA currently has some openings in the 4 Day Afternoon
class! This class is offered four days a week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Our
preschool program uses a play-based, theme-driven approach to learning. We believe that a child’s play is their work and
that children learn best by experiencing their world through all of their senses. Academics such as literacy, math, and
science are incorporated into the daily routine through a variety of developmentally appropriate practices and “hands-on”
activities. t is our goal for each child to build a sense of belonging in a mutually respectful classroom environment.

by having an understanding envi-
ronment and giving us a good
amount of homework.”
At Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts, we inspire and enable our children to reach their full potential
by providing a rigorous education combining academic excellence, an arts-integrated curriculum, and a
strong Catholic foundation. Applications for our tots, preschool, and K-8 program are now being accepted.

Ava has many fond memories of
AACA since she started attending
our school in kindergarten. Her
favorite memory is the ropes
course, and the Harry Potter unit
taught by Ms. Carroll! Her advice
for new students: “Always try your
best and try not to stress too
much!”
Paige Reynolds
Amundsen High School
Paige started at AACA in our pre-
school program, and became in-
volved in volleyball and basketball
for five years! In three words she
describes AACA as fun, safe, and
religious. Paige also has this to say
about AACA: “AACA taught me to
