Exalted Rulers Message
The month of May was a very busy and success-ful month for our Lodge. We began the month by do-nating canapés and appetizers to the dinner dance for the Battered Women of Flagler
County which was held here on May 2nd. Mother’s Day was a small but pleasing sit-down dinner on May 10th. The Ladies Auxiliary held their “Spring Fling” Din-ner Dance on May 16th a good time was had by all. On behalf of the Lodge I would like to thank Jon Netts, Jim Canfield, Chris Kelly, Andy Jekabson and the Cen-tral Florida Chapter Local 3 IBEW Retir-ees Assoc. represented by John Greco, for their generous donation which enabled us to purchase space on the Palm Coast Wel-come sign. The actual sign was donated by Lew Calobrisi, Tom Hoffmann and myself. The sign will be located on Palm Coast Parkway East. Located just past US1. April ended with all our income producing units in the “black” once again. This shows we are doing the right things. This should be another busy month. June 6th is the Ladies Auxiliary, “Luau”. June 13th is “Flag Day”, June 20th the Lodge Picnic and June 27th , “New Members” Dinner Dance. Look for more details in other pages of this News-letter. We need your support if we are to continue to be successful. The “Flag Day” Ceremony has always been impressive and moving, mark your calendars to bring your friends and neighbors. We offer a free light lunch after the ceremony. Beginning in June we will offer an “Early Bird” special menu. Chef Vin-nie will be offering three Specials Meals, each at the phenomenal price of $6.95. He will be offering these meals between the

There were 39 Members who attended our May meeting and the pouring rain probably kept some mem-bers from attending. We currently have 144 Paid Members. Tom Mayne, from the STARR program gave a very informa-tive talk about home safety and many of us signed up to have our homes in-spected. This is a free Community Ser-vice and if anyone is interested please call me and I can let you know how to contact him. We received a letter from the Florida Elks Association thanking us for our generous donation of $500, and this money goes to help the Harry Anna Trust Fund and support the Youth Camp. Without our Fund raising events we would not be able to make these donations, and that is why we need you to come out and help with upcoming events. Carol Mayor read some more of the By-Laws and we are so fortunate to have someone with so much experience. She suggested that we need to update some of the wording, so we will work on this, and make any changes after we have gone through all the By-Laws. Pat Maurer had a Craft Meeting on May 13th, with only one person attending. The next meeting will be June 10th. Please call her if you
have any questions and let her know if you are making items for the Craft Fair. The Spring Fling was lots of fun, and everyone enjoyed the music of Nostalgia. Thanks to all the people who made this a success and also at-tended the dance. To Jan Hylander, for the creative table decorations, to Vinnie and all the volunteers who worked in the Kitchen and of course the wait-resses who always do an outstanding job. We will have our Luau on June 6th so please come dressed in your Hawai-ian outfits and enjoy another fun eve-ning. This will be our last event before the well deserved Summer Break. June 13th is Flag Day and we need some volunteers to help carry the Flags at the Lodge Ceremony. If you are interested in helping with this, please call Brenda Crosby. The Lodge Picnic will be held on June 20th. We will continue to collect food for the Food Bank and request that you bring one item to the Meetings to be donated. We also have a jar for “Loose Change”, and that will also be contributed to the Food Bank. Trudy Trowbridge and Helen Callahan have agreed to Chair the Fashion Show again next year. They did an outstanding job with this years show. Thank you both. We still need some volunteers to Chair the Card Party in November. Also if anyone knows how to organize a Military Bridge, please let me know. I will not be at the June Meeting; Brenda, our Vice President will preside over the meeting. Please come out and support her. There will not be a speaker at the June meeting, we will have our Ice Cream Social. I would like to wish every-one a Safe and Happy Summer. Enjoy this time, travels and visiting with fam-ily. Please come back in September refreshed and ready to volunteer and support our Ladies Auxiliary.
Respectfully,
ctà _x|ÑyxÜà President

“This and That”
By Jack Konrad
In June we celebrate Flag Day and fathers day. Fa-therhood basically is a long battle to make a dependent inde-pendent. It is a steady battle to keep the next generation from making the last generation’s mistakes and to change the gen-eration gap into a generation bond. All of us are children, many of us in our time become father, grand fathers and even great-grandfathers. Some of us have the happy occasion to salute or be saluted by another generation along the way, some of us are chips off the old block and some of us are regarded more as splinters. But all of us can join in saluting fatherhood. Cele-brate the joy of knowing that somehow or other we helped to bring up somebody of whom we can be proud, and/or fond; and who is proud of and concerned about us! … Nobody knows who devised the first flag, but there is a myth telling how it happened. Seems that one warrior got hurt in a fight between two tribes and held up his bloody garment to show that he needed help, and everybody followed him. That’s why so many flags are red… Our new elementary school was raising the American flag for the first time. To make the day special, we invited the Marine Corps color guard to come out and perform the duty for us. The day before the ceremony, after giving directions, our secretary asked whether the ser-geant was sending Marines who liked children. After a brief
pause he replied, “Ma’am, if I tell them to like children, they will like children...
In the Elks the proper way to salute the flag is as fol-lows: The hand should be held flat with the thumb hidden
in the palm and placed over the heart. A first grade teacher had her hands full on the first
day of school. At one point she had them recite the Pledge Al-legiance “Stand and place your hand over your heart,” she in-structed. Little Susie stood but put her hand on her backside. “Susie,” the teacher said, “You are supposed to put your hand over your heart.” “But I am,” protested Susie. “No, your heart is in your chest, not back there.” “No it’s not,” Susie explained. “When my grandma comes to my house, she holds me, rocks me, pats me back there and says, ‘Bless your little heart…
Don’t drink and drive. Instead, the next time you get too drunk to drive, walk into a local Dominos and order a pizza. Then when they go to deliver it, ask for a ride home… I don’t like the idea that people can call you in your car. I think there’s news you shouldn’t get at seventy miles and hour. “Pregnant? Whoa!”… I get very unnerved by the way people drive down here. They drive slow and they sit low. The state flag should be just a steering wheel with a hat and two knuck-les on each side of it….
So long for now brothers and sisters, and remember: There are worse things than getting a call for a wrong number at 3 a.m. It could be the right number…
