WASHINGTON, JUNE 6 /--/Scientists have developed anartificial intelligence (AI)system that can automaticallyidentify, count and describeanimals in their naturalhabitats. Photographs thatare automatically collected bymotion-sensor cameras canthen be automaticallydescribed by deep neuralnetworks. The result is asystem that can automateanimal identification for up to99.3 per cent of images whilestill performing at the same96.6 per cent accuracy rate ofcrowdsourced teams of humanvolunteers. "This technologylets us accurately, unobtrusively and

inexpensively collect wildlifedata, which could helpcatalyse the transformation ofmany fields of ecology, wildlifebiology, zoology, conservationbiology and animal behaviourinto 'big data' sciences," saidJeff Clune, an associateprofessor at the University ofWyoming in the US. "This willdramatically improve ourability to both study andconserve wildlife and preciousecosystems," said Clune.

Deep neural networks are aform of computationalintelligence loosely inspired byhow animal brains see andunderstand the world.

They require vast amountsof training data to work well,

and the data must beaccurately labelled.

This study obtained thenecessary data from SnapshotSerengeti, a citizen scienceproject that has deployed alarge number of "cameratraps" (motion-sensorcameras) in Tanzania thatcollect millions of images ofanimals in their naturalhabitat, such as lions, leopards, cheetahs andelephants. Crowdsourcedteams of human volunteerswere asked to label each imagemanually. The studyharnessed 3.2 million labelledimages produced in thismanner by more than 50,000human volunteers over several

years. "Not only does theartificial intelligence systemtell you which of 48 differentspecies of animal is present, but it also tells you how manythere are and what they aredoing. It will tell you if theyare eating, sleeping, if babiesare present, etc," saidMargaret Kosmala fromHarvard University in the US."We estimate that the deeplearning technology pipelinewe describe would save morethan eight years of humanlabeling effort for eachadditional 3 million images. That is a lot of valuablevolunteer time that can beredeployed to help otherprojects," said Kosmala.
