(EOIC) NEW DELHI, JUNE 6 /--/ "Plastic" has been declared the children's word of the year as it is most commonly used by them, indicating that they are aware about the hazards of plastic pollution, according to Oxford University Press. The Oxford University Press analysed short stories submitted to BBC Radio 2's 500 Words competition. Plastic, the ocean, Emmeline Pankhurst, Donald Trump, Brexit, Korea, Grenfell Tower, unicorns, slime and computer game Fortnite are some of the people and subjects that influence British children's creativity and use of language, says a report published today by Oxford University Press (OUP). Plastic is the Oxford Children's Word of the Year because of its significant increase in use in the competition (a total rise of more than 100 per cent on the 2017 competition). Children use plastic in their stories in an emotive way to convey their understanding of the damage pollution is causing to marine life, drawing on their creativity and imagination to deliver powerful descriptive imagery in stories, with titles such as The Plastic Shore, The Mermaid's Plastic Mission and The Evil Mr Plastic, OUP said in a statement. Vineeta Gupta, head of Children's Dictionaries at OUP, was quoted in the statement as saying: "Children have shown they are acutely aware of the impact plastic has on our environment and how it will affect their own future. They have used their stories to devise imaginative ways to combat this issue and bring about change in their world." Last year, Trump was the Children's Word of the Year. This year, US president Donald Trump took the top spot for famous people mentioned for the second year in succession. Santa and Cinderella remain the most used fictional characters as in all other years of the competition. Of the political words/names which have grown most in frequency of use since 2017, Brexit tops the list with an increase of 182 per cent. It is mainly mentioned as an item on the news, or as a boring topic of conversation. (PTI) under the misbelief that Horlicks is a good nutritious product for children as it is endorsed by Mr Bachchan. Thus Horlicks may displace healthy real family home foods and this way contravenes tackling the problem of undernutrition among children," said Dr Arti Maria, Head of Neonatology Department, RML hospital here. Dr Aseem Malhotra, a renowned British cardiologist and author of The Pioppi Diet and former Director of Action on Sugar, UK, said high sugar foods/ beverages should be prohibited for children as sugar has no nutritional value and that there is increasing evidence that added sugar increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and fatty liver. Claiming that the campaign was misleading and undermines optimal nutrition, the experts NEW DELHI, JUNE 6 /--/ A group of public health experts have urged superstar Amitabh Bachchan to dissociate himself from promoting Horlicks, a multinational brand that has extended support to the Centre's recently launched National Nutrition Mission aimed at addressing the issue of undernutrition in the country. The experts under the banner of the Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest - India (NAPi) in a letter to the actor said, "Horlicks is a high sugar product, as 100 gram of a popularly advertised pack of Horlicks Delight, contains 78 gram of carbohydrates of which 32 grams is sucrose sugar". "This is harmful for children as it may contribute to childhood obesity and non communicable disease in later life," the experts said. They said the WHO recommends a reduced daily intake of free sugars throughout the life course to less than 10 per cent of total energy intake. Furthermore, in the interest of good health WHO suggests intake of free sugars to below 5 per cent of total energy intake, the letter stated. The letter mentioned that in 2016, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a Resolution 69.9 that recommends ending inappropriate promotion of foods for children from ages 636 months based on WHO and FAO dietary guidelines. "Going by this recommendation promotion of Horlicks falls in category of inappropriate as they use false health claims in TV commercials," they said, adding that it dents Bachchans image as a socially responsible celebrity. "I fear that this campaign may have serious adverse repercussions: Horlicks is expensive and is likely to drain pockets of marginalized families urged the actor to call off his association with Horlicks. Indias former health secretary Keshav Desiraju is the Chairman of Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest - India (NAPi). On March 8, on the occasion of International Womens Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the National Nutrition Mission at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. (EOIC) LONDON, JUNE 6 /--/ Singer Ariana Grande says she experienced post- traumatic stress disorder following the suicide bomb attack on her Manchester Arena concert in May last year that claimed the lives of 22 people. The 24- year-old American singer suspended rest of her tour after the May 22 attacks but returned to Manchester in June to host a charity concert to raise 23 million for the bombing victims and their families. In an interview with British Vogue, the singer has revealed how the bombing affected her. "Yeah, it's a real thing. I know those families and my fans, and everyone there experienced a tremendous amount of it as well. It's hard to talk about because so many people have suffered such severe, tremendous loss "I feel like I shouldn't even be talking about my own experience like I shouldn't even say anything. I don't think I'll ever know how to talk about it and not cry," she said. Grande also spoke about anxiety. "I think a lot of people have anxiety, especially right now. My anxiety has anxiety. I've always had anxiety. I've never really spoken about it because I thought everyone had it, but when I got home from tour (in September 2017) it was the most severe I think it's ever been." The singer has a worker bee tattoo, the Industrial Revolution-era symbol of Manchester that became a symbol for solidarity in the wake of he arena attack, behind her ear. Grande's album 'Sweetener' is due for release soon. (PTI) WASHINGTON, JUNE 6 /--/ Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can automatically identify, count and describe animals in their natural habitats. Photographs that are automatically collected by motion-sensor cameras can then be automatically described by deep neural networks. The result is a system that can automate animal identification for up to 99.3 per cent of images while still performing at the same 96.6 per cent accuracy rate of crowdsourced teams of human volunteers. "This technology lets us accurately, unobtrusively and inexpensively collect wildlife data, which could help catalyse the transformation of many fields of ecology, wildlife biology, zoology, conservation biology and animal behaviour into 'big data' sciences," said Jeff Clune, an associate professor at the University of Wyoming in the US. "This will dramatically improve our ability to both study and conserve wildlife and precious ecosystems," said Clune. Deep neural networks are a form of computational intelligence loosely inspired by how animal brains see and understand the world. They require vast amounts of training data to work well, and the data must be accurately labelled. This study obtained the necessary data from Snapshot Serengeti, a citizen science project that has deployed a large number of "camera traps" (motion-sensor cameras) in Tanzania that collect millions of images of animals in their natural habitat, such as lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants. Crowdsourced teams of human volunteers were asked to label each image manually. The study harnessed 3.2 million labelled images produced in this manner by more than 50,000 human volunteers over several years. "Not only does the artificial intelligence system tell you which of 48 different species of animal is present, but it also tells you how many there are and what they are doing. It will tell you if they are eating, sleeping, if babies are present, etc," said Margaret Kosmala from Harvard University in the US. "We estimate that the deep learning technology pipeline we describe would save more than eight years of human labeling effort for each additional 3 million images. That is a lot of valuable volunteer time that can be redeployed to help other projects," said Kosmala.
