Ash Wednesday
March 6 is Ash Wednesday. It marks the beginning of Lent, which is a season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting.
Why do we receive ashes? There are several scriptural references to the use of ashes. One of these is that of the Ninevites in the book of Jonah, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes. In the same way, we receive ashes as a sign of repentance, of humility of heart, and a recognition that we have not always lived our lives according to God’s will. The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with prayer and penance, fasting, and almsgiving. Our foreheads are marked with ashes in the form of a cross. It is an outward testimony of our faith that Christ Jesus, who died on the cross and rose again, is the source of our salvation. It also brings to mind the sign of the cross marked on our foreheads when we were baptized as infants, claiming us for Christ. Wearing ashes in the form of a cross proclaims: “I belong to Christ.”
