Thank you for your interest in the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) at La Trobe University, one of the key senior leadership positions at the University.
La Trobe opened its doors to its first intake of students in 1967. Over the half century of its existence, it has established a reputation as an innovative and accessible university, willing to take risks and to challenge the norm. It is also ranked amongst the top 400 universities in the world on all the major global university rankings. Our geographic footprint has grown to include 4 regional campuses; and our student body now includes a significant number of students studying online. Very few universities combine these missions of inclusiveness, innovation and excellence as well as La Trobe does.
Like all Universities, we are constantly reviewing the way we do things. Our environment is changing rapidly – competition for students locally and internationally is increasing, while the possibilities offered by new technologies are expanding constantly. Our funding will increasingly be linked to our performance on the government’s performance-based funding measures. These factors have led to the creation of this new role.
A MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLOR
The DVCE will oversee a thorough overhaul of the University’s educational offerings to ensure that the content, structure and delivery modes of our degrees are fit for purpose for a University in the 21st century. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, and as a member of Senior Executive Group, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) will lead this transformation and will ensure that the University is well positioned to take advantage of digital technologies in its teaching and learning.
The DVCE will be the University’s Chief Academic Officer, with responsibility for quality assurance of teaching and learning and for quality improvement; for liaison with Academic Board, and oversight of TEQSA re-accreditation and related matters.
This is an exciting time to be at La Trobe. The University is in a phase of renewal, evidenced by a significant capital program, a major investment in outstanding new staff appointments, and a pursuit of our bold vision to be a great university of a different kind – a university equipped to take full advantage of the opportunities of the 21st century.
PROFESSOR JOHN DEWAR
Professor John Dewar Vice-Chancellor and President La Trobe University

OUR MISSIONAdvancing global perspectives through learning and knowledge, for the benefit of our students and communities.
OUR VISIONTo promote positive change and address the major issues of our time through being connected, inclusive and excellent.
OUR VALUESOur early reputation as a radical and challenging institution continues to influence the way we enrich the experience of our students and engage with our partners and communities. We were founded half a century ago to broaden participation in higher education in Melbourne’s north and, later, in regional Victoria. We have succeeded for many thousands of students who would otherwise have been excluded from the opportunities provided by a university education.
We continue to support access, diversity and inclusivity while undertaking world-class research that aims to address the global forces shaping our world and make a difference to some of the world’s most pressing problems, including climate change, securing food, water and the environment, building healthy communities, and creating a more just and sustainable future. This approach is based on our values of:
■ inclusiveness, diversity, equity and social justice; ■ pursuing excellence and sustainability in everything we do; ■ championing our local communities in Melbourne’s north and regional Victoria; and ■ being willing to innovate and disrupt the traditional way of doing things.
Of all Australian universities, we are the most successful at combining accessibility and excellence and have become a place where social inclusion and globally recognised excellence come together for the benefit of our students, our staff and our communities.
Our academics and researchers achieve national and international recognition, our public intellectuals demonstrate an enduring social conscience and influence, and our alumni achieve extraordinary success and impact in government, industry and not for profit organisations.
We strive to be exemplars for the sector in our commitment to gender equity and to inclusivity for marginalised groups; and we work with Indigenous people and organisations to support their social, cultural and economic aspirations.
We embrace sustainable practices across all our campuses because we are committed to improving environmental, social and economic outcomes for our communities.
We contribute to economic development for our local communities, and our future activity will increasingly be international as we become a globally connected university in everything we do.

Everything we do is grounded in a shared commitment to ensuring students have a positive and rewarding experience at La Trobe.
We are proud of our strong history of ensuring people from all walks of life can fully realise all the life-changing benefits of a La Trobe University education.
ADVANCED LEARNING SPACESLa Trobe’s new and refreshed learning spaces encourage collaborative learning. Facilities designed for experiential learning and group work boast the latest technologies. Staff and students alike use our One Button Studios to create engaging digital resources.
PARTNERS IN LEARNINGOur skilled and passionate staff deliver an outstanding learning experience to their students. Academic staff combine their discipline, insights, research, and learning and teaching expertise to challenge, inform and inspire.
FLEXIBLE OPTIONSWe know our students need flexibility in when and how they learn. The success of our initial portfolio of online courses is paving the way for the development of a fully-flexible range of study offerings, where students build individualised programs with a mix of delivery modes to suit their personal and learning needs.
RECOGNISING EXCELLENCEThe La Trobe University Excellence Program recognises and rewards the outstanding achievement of our students in academic, sporting, cultural, entrepreneurial and community life. Students can develop their leadership capability, connect with industry leaders and realise their ambition to become the next generation of change agents.
SUPPORT FOR SUCCESSLa Trobe is privileged to educate one of Australia’s most diverse student cohorts drawn from across the globe with a range of educational and life experiences. Students can access our learning supports around-the-clock, and dedicated teams of staff and student peers provide consultations, workshops and online supports through our campus and online Learning Hubs.
INDUSTRY LATEST Our curriculum is constantly updated to keep pace with workplace practice. Collaborative curriculum design and development processes merge student and industry input, then combine academic discipline with learning and teaching expertise.
MUCH MORE THAN THE CLASSROOM We support our students to thrive in their academic, work and personal lives through targeted programs and supports for emotional and physical wellbeing. We hold activities that encourage a sense of fun and build connection to communities as diverse as sporting clubs, volunteering programs, student clubs and social functions.
OUTSTANDING STUDENT EXPERIENCE
9
The traditional model of university education is experiencing disruption. Over the past ten years, the sector has experienced a groundswell of change, including increasing scale, technological capability, performance funding challenges, shifts in student expectations and alternative educational models. Although degrees will remain important, prospective and continuing students are seeking more flexible modes of learning, simple to navigate courses with options that align with their career aspirations and ‘stackable’ credentials that meet their emerging skills needs across their careers. These shifts challenge traditional thinking about campus engagement, student support and the ways in which education is offered and administered.
La Trobe is proud of its history of richly diverse student cohorts and recognises that our students face a range of challenges as they balance their studies with employment, caring responsibilities and family and community expectations. By positioning the student experience at the heart of the University’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022, La Trobe is responding to the disruptive challenges of our time in a manner that prioritises the experience of our students and builds capability across the academy.
The importance of strategic leadership for success is acknowledged in the creation of the two new positions of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students) to oversee student support, equity, orientation and transition and employability; and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) to lead the transformation of the La Trobe education offer,
engagement and development, teaching quality and curriculum innovation. Central to the success of these portfolios are strong and effective working relationships with the Colleges, Divisions and Units of the University, with whom they collaborate to innovate, lead and deliver the student learning experience.
We are embarking on an ambitious plan we call Clever Learning, to transform our educational offer and provide a high quality, contemporary experience for our students. The Learning and Teaching Plan 2018-2022, anchors this vision and encompasses the La Trobe Teaching Excellence Principles that articulate the distinctive excellence expectations of La Trobe teachers.
OUR LEARNING AND TEACHING OBJECTIVES
The Learning and Teaching Plan 2018-2022 builds on the University’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022. At the heart of the University’s Strategic Plan is the student experience.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCETo be the sort of university we want to be – an outstanding student-focussed institution with well-supported staff – La Trobe sees operational excellence as a key enabler in every part of our complex organisation: education, research, engagement and supporting administration.
OUR INVESTMENT – UNIVERSITY CITY OF THE FUTUREWe’re developing a world-class University City of the Future at our 235-hectare Melbourne campus in Bundoora. This is the largest capital plan in the University’s 50-year history and will create and drive long-term jobs, innovation and economic growth through a $5 billion investment over 10 years.
OUR PEOPLELa Trobe provides a safe, secure and inclusive work environment, providing ongoing support, development opportunities and meaningful career paths that encourages innovation for staff across all campuses and locations.

LA TROBE VALUES We continue to support access, diversity and inclusivity while undertaking world-class research that aims to address the global forces shaping our world and make a difference to some of the world’s.
most pressing problems. This approach is based on our values of:
■ inclusiveness, diversity, equity and social justice; ■ pursuing excellence and sustainability in everything
we do; ■ championing our local communities in Melbourne’s
north and regional Victoria; and ■ being willing to innovate and disrupt the traditional
way of doing things.
LA TROBE CULTURAL QUALITIESOur cultural qualities underpin everything we do. As we work towards realising the strategic goals of the University we strive to work in a way which is aligned to our four cultural qualities:
■ We are Connected: We connect to the world outside — the students and communities we serve, both locally and globally;
■ We are Innovative: We tackle the big issues of our time to transform the lives of our students and society.;
■ We are Accountable: We strive for excellence in everything we do. We hold each other and ourselves to account, and work to the highest standard; and
■ We Care: We care about what we do and why we do it. We believe in the power of education and research to transform lives and global society. We care about being the difference in the lives of our students and communities.

La Trobe is a network of global physical and digital communities connected by our values and commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience to over 38,000 globally enabled students. Together, our onshore, offshore and online networks make up our ‘One University, Many Communities’ configuration.’
As an institution that aims to grow our brand globally, we must start to shift the way we see our campuses and the way students engage with us to learn. We must recognise that each one of our campuses, our offshore programs and our growing digital community are connected by our cultural qualities and driven by our desire to provide an outstanding student experience.
OUR MULTI-CAMPUS NETWORK – ONSHORE
La Trobe has campuses in Melbourne’s CBD (Collins Street), Bundoora, Bendigo, Shepparton, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Sydney. Our comprehensive campus network allows us to reach a broad range of communities and socio-economic groups and promote wider participation in higher education. Each campus is a unique expression of place, people, history and local partnerships and plays a vital role in the social, cultural and economic life of its community. It’s important that our international students feel encouraged and supported to visit multiple La Trobe campuses to experience the culturally diverse attributes that each one has to offer.
ONE UNIVERSITY MANY COMMUNITIES
What we’ll do
■ Support our workforce to better understand crosscultural communication and facilitate globalisation knowledge sharing sessions, in order to unite our University campuses and deliver a consistently outstanding student experience;
■ Work with other educational providers and local government and councils to ensure there is an international student information portal for each of our Australian campuses;
■ Provide support to each campus network to develop partnerships with local institutions, with the aim of creating stronger employment pathways for international students;
■ Maintain La Trobe International’s engagement and presence at each campus, in order to help globalise our multi-campus network; and
■ Promote and support Indigenous cultural experiences and place-based subjects at each one of our campuses.

The Melbourne campus of the University is situated next to Bundoora on a 400-hectare parkland which also includes the La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary.
The campus features a research and development park with both Government and commercial laboratory facilities as well as extensive new facilities to house research relating to life sciences.
It also includes the Borchardt Library which was renovated in 2009 to become a state-of-the-art technology-enabled learning space and attracts scholars globally. The campus also offers restaurants, shops, sport facilities, residential colleges and entertainment venues.
Work has begun to build on these strengths and turn the Melbourne campus into a vibrant centre of culture, recreation and education in Melbourne’s north, one of the fastest growing population areas in Australia.
It will be an exciting space to grow: a place for mixing ideas, debate, business and civic leadership.
The University also has a campus in the Melbourne CBD.
The refurbished facility at 360 Collins Street opened in 2017. This refurbished facility has been designed to support delivery of degree programs as well as professional and executive education programs, and host industry engagement and other events in a CBD location.
One of La Trobe University’s greatest strengths is its campus network across regional Victoria. The University has campuses in Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton, and is the largest provider of higher education in regional Victoria. Approximately 20 per cent of the University’s student population is located at its regional campuses, and some teaching and research disciplines are based at the regional locations. This includes the La Trobe Rural Health School that manages dentistry and physiotherapy programs (Bendigo); and the Murray Darling Freshwater Research Centre and the Centre for the Study of the Inland (Albury-Wodonga). Each regional campus is a significant employer and important member of its local community.
